1964 ERINNERUNGEN Published by the Berlin American High School CALVIN R. TRICE PRINCIPAL l1OBBJ'.NEIV MEXICO ,,Ich bin ein Berliner 1917 - 1963 The Berlin American High School presents the 1964 Yearbook in memory of the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy INTRODUCTICJN Between the covers of this 1963-1964 yearbook, sentimental and unforgettable thoughts and memories of the year are proudly em- blazoned. We hope this not only proves to be a treasured keepsake to remind us in future years of old and dear friends Whose paths have branched in various directions, but of happy and profitable times as Well. For others it will be their orientation into halls of learning where they Will be a vital part in the school years to come. This memoir brings to light the pleasure and experiences that Berlin American High has provided us in creating the formative back- ground necessary in developing a more well-rounded individual ready to meet life's challenges. It was here that we planned our strategy to protect our interests. After all, we were outnumbered by every other class in the school. We were the most individualistic people in the school, or so it seemed when the twenty-eight of us attempted to agree on anything. When we finally called truce and made a decision, we were most active. Actually no project in the school was dompleted without Senior participation. We must have been suffering from delusions of gran- deur because we simply HAD to lead the school onward and upward! When there was a Student Council meeting, a third of the class marched out homeroom. However, it was not as though they were getting out of homeroom because, we were proud to say, they worked hard to keep the students busy with new activities. Honor Society kept the seniors even busier with their homework. Perhaps the greatest loss to the Senior Class was the boys. Coach King summoned forth the male forces to protect the school against each visiting team while the few remaining Seniors sat alone in the bare little room. Since all the captains and most of the managers and star players came from our particular fortress, we were very proud when the trophies were presented. We were not completely without culture either for we contributed four of the best members to the chorus. The Bear Faris would have been bare had the Seniors not devoted their precious time and effort to the paper. Somehow we decided on our rings and invitations, and managed to find times and places for our mutual fun. Through the thin and thick of it, we survived the year, led the school, and won the ultimate award - graduation. Sophmore Class History All of you are familiar with the word sophmore, which means wise fool . By striving constantly, we have lived up to the title well. The Class of 66 has been proud to have Marlowe White as President, Jay Jensen as Vice-President, Carol Hayes with dual job of secretary and student council representative, and Kay Mizell as treasurer. The other representative to the student council was 10-Bis Larry Leibrock. Showing notable academic abilities, 80 OA, of our class are now accomplished biologists, due to the patient teachings of Mr. Simcox and nights of hard studying. Thanks to Mr. Jensen, we are now able to reason enough to realize that geometry is definitely our subject, for all of us can now recognize the logic of most statements. We give our utmost thanks to Miss Hargrove for inspiring us to become orators, writers and dramatists. Wie became so involved with Shakespeare's fzzlizff Caemr that the Ides of March is now our official day of mourning. In football, our school won the Class C champion- ship with the enthusiastic participation of the sophmore class. At any basketball game or wrest- ling match our flamboyant athletes could be seen fighting for victory, and our ardent girls cheering them on. Considering that the sophmore year is one of the most difficult in high school, we feel that we have worked hard and that our class has been well represented in the school life of 1963-1964. Auf Wiedersehen! Freshman Class History The Berlin High School Freshman class grew by leaps and bounds. There were always new faces to greet, and many old friends were still with us. The year, however, saw several old Berlin handsn return to the States. By Christmas our class consisted of about one hundred students. Although this group was large, its school spirit, enthusiasm, and hard work made it appear to be much larger. The boys worked hard at football and helped to win the Conference Championship. Those who did not play sat on the sidelines and backed our team. A large group of students made the long Bremerhaven trip to cheer our boys on to victory. We were especially proud of Larry Jenson and Steve Denton, two of our classmates who made the varsity. Throughout the season the basketball team was also supported with enthusiasm. Linda Pruett and Brenda Spake were chosen as cheer- leaders and helped to cheer all of our teams on to successful seasons. Top Scholars were Larry Jenson, Bill Harrigan, Sam Kamikawa, Chadwick Wfeeks, Steve Denton, and Phil Reeds. These boys really showed the girls, but look out! Next year the girls will be out for revenge! For the second straight year we were undefeated, adding another trophy to our school. This year's record was somewhat of a surprise because only five lettermen were back from last year's championship team. Many on the squad were small and inexperienced, yet the record shows these handicaps did not hold us back. Our first game was against Bitburg, a much bigger and more experienced team. But we won 25-14! After playing our first game at home, we traveled to Bad Kreuznach and played what proved to be the most hard fought game of the season. We won by a slim 6-0 margin scoring our lone touchdown in the second quarter. Our defense secured that victory by stopping all the Bear Kat offensive drives. In the next game at home against Toul, both our offenses and defense got together and defeated Toul 40-O. We then went to Bremerhaven to play our arch rivals at their homecoming. The game was close in the first half, but We erupted for three quick second-half touchdowns to pull out a 26-0 whitewash. Bremerhaven was the third straight opponent we had blanked. The following Friday we had our Homecoming pep rally at the bonfire and burned Karlsruhe in effigy. On Saturday We rolled- over their Knights 61 -6. We put 40 points on the scoreboard by halftime then cruised to our largest offensive barrage ever. ' This nine touchdown burst and an 11 -0 record in our two past seasons inspired us to beat Bitburg in our last game. The game with Bitburg was played at Spangdahlem on a cold, windy day. Both the offensive and defensive units filled to produce a sweet 35-0 trouncing of the Barons, which made us the undefeated champions again. Congratulations go to head coach joe King and assistant coach John Gjernes for the fine job they did in molding the 1963 champions. Greek mythology told of Hercules wrestling with Anteus, Greek athletes wrestled at the earliest Olympic Games, and later Roman athletes strove for victory in the coliseum. Every nation has had some form of wrestling. Wrestling is a vigorous and stimulating activity which requires a high level of total body strength and endurance. This year, wrestling was introduced for the first time into the Berlin High School sports program. This new sport gave many boys the opportunity to participate in a varsity sport and not be hindered by size. It gave them a chance to compete against someone of their own weight in one of the twelve weight classes that make up a team. The weight classes ranged from 95 pounds and were at regular intervals to include an unlimited weight class for anyone over 180 pounds. The season consisted of two meets each against Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Kaiserslautern, Baumholder, and Bad Kreuznach. The team had little success against the experienced teams, but managed a two meet sweep against another newcomer to the sport, Bad Kreuznach, scoring at least one individual win in every weight class against them. After the season schedule is completed the Northern and Southern Regionals are held. The top four placers in the regionals compete two weeks later in the USADEG individual and team meet which determines the wrestling champions of all the Army High Schools in Europe plus the guest Air Force schools from Wiesbaden and Bitburg. The 1963 Champion team came from Wfiesbaden with Frank- furt as runnersup. Frank Harris is shown cross fading, which is the counter to the single leg pick up. ' 'D' ff3?ea1m'1.M:f?z. K b ,E W Q, 1.
