FRIDAY HARBOR, WASHINGTON Bud came from the San Juan Islands in the State of Washington, not far from the 1 JMS on ff . Canadian border, It was there that he discovered his deep affection for the sea and ships. For two years he attended the Univer- sity of Washington where he was a member of the N. R. O. T. G. unit. Bud's love for boats attracted him to sailing for his main sport and recreation. He sailed on the plebe team and on the varsity team for two years. As a second-rate sport Bud liked dragging. His friendly smile and suave man- ner made him a favorite with the girls, and he dragged them frequently.
