This is to prepare the student to become a competent ,itizen. In doing so, a well rounded understanding of his social, political, and economic environment, knowledge of the factors and influences that brought it about, and a true concept of democratic aims and individual responsibilities, are provided for him to lead toward a continuance of the American way of life. The field of social studies includes: Orientation, Civics, World History, Geography, American History, American Government, Economics, Soci- ology, and Contemporary History, all necessary to the comprehension of our modern society . As the world continues to progress, it is imperative that tolerance and understanding also expand. The study of the social studies aids a student to acquire these traits so extremely important for success in each endeavor. american history l '.r'1'i-.. . 5 is . s an 9 'fi Q 16 A VICT social stuclles ,, 1'.I'fCL'1Q1'L F gr Q, 1-fm H f X, .1 , H A WH- 4 J . Typing, Shorthand, Bookkeeping, Business Math, Merchandising, Selling, and Co -op are all a part of the commercial course, extend- ing the opportunity to all students for a stepping stone toward success. Miss Kems Mrs. Takis 'lf if' 4 ,X Mr. Farrell science Today, more than ever before, the challenge that science presents to us is of the greatest importance in co-operation with space travel and the future of man's existence. Besides trying to conquer the future, science courses also provide useful information for the young men and women of today. These courses are all designed to acquaint the students with the mysteries and intricasies of life and enable them to be used at every available in- stance. In biology classes students learn the science of plants and animals that surround their environment. Chemistry introduces the student to the compositions and origins of the chemicals that comprise life. Phys- ics is the study of the laws that maintain the scientific reactions of its related subjects that work hand in hand with our ascent to success. Bernstein and student director Kathy Caye. The play, Best Foot Forward by John Cecil Holm, is a three-act comedy concerning typical college students. Terry Moreton, Bob Plec, and Gloria Bednarz were the leadsg and their supporting cast, which included Stuart Bloch, Jack Osman, Bob Stimson. Gary Johnson, Marlies Gartner, Susan Cole, Brenda Bentzel, Joan Bennet, Lois Rials, Morley Winograd, Don Naftel, David Rosensweet, Carl Gunderson, and Rosemary Czarney, helped make the evening a complete success. providing the wonderful music for the play was the A Cappella Choir under the direction of Mr. William De Maria which assisted the cheerleaders in preforming new routines for their part as the Win- socki cheering section. All working together, the directors, actors, and choir members can certainly be said to have put their Best Foot Forward. perfection 77 exchange student program ,,..-f-' ll Marles Gartner Bill Veder Mayra Lopez, from Havana Cuba IS also a foreign student, though not sponsored by an exchange student scholarslup After graduatron from Berkley High School she will I'eU1m to her home in Cuba and ln September she wlll enter college in the United States She is now hvmg wnh her relatives in Huntington Woods Eighteen year-old Enzo De Palma from Taranto, Italy came to Berk ley for the spring semester from Garden Ctty New York where he spent the fust part of his school year He IS now hving with Rlchard Bryant s famtly 111 Huntmgtaon Woods Roula Argyriou Brunhild Beenken 14 L1v1ng wrth the Parsonage famlly Ih1S year IS Marlles Gartner Her home 15 1n Torsch Germany where she hves with her parents and only s1ster Marlxes rs supr1sed at the power of the student govemment and the f3.l'I11113l'1Iy between teachers and students She says that when regular school ends here another school day of extra currtcular actx vrttes begms Wxllalrn Veder s trlp to Amenca has also been sponsored by the Coun c1l of Churches B111 llves tn Ger many rn the c1ty of Berltn Halensee Here rn Amer1ca B111 lrves wtth the I-larnlm famrly He thmks that the school sp1r1t 1n Berkley 15 tre find time for all our extra act1vx ties Sponsored by the Councll of Churches Brunhrld Beenken has come to us from the town of Varel Germany Brunhlld IS the youngest 1n a famrly of four glrls and one boy She IS lrvmg w1th the Stevens famrly 1n Berkley Argyro Argyrroro better known to Berkley as Roula has come to the Umted States under the sponsor sh1p of the Amer1can F1e1d Servlce Roula comes from the ctty of Thes salomka ln Greece where she hves with her parents.
