The Rock Fleming Future Teachers Club, under the guidance of Mrs. Wonneberger, is becoming one ofthe most active clubs in the school. lt was started back in September of 1953 in behalf of our former Principal, Rock Fleming. The ciub was organized and started through the help of Mrs. Wonneberger, Mrs. Elbing, Mr. Al- ley, Mrs. Luther and Mr. Weaver. The main purpose of the club is to teach the members more about the teaching profession, help build good character essential for teaching, and help develop leadership. Each year the club gives an S800 scholarship to the best qualified and most deserving senior who is taking up the teaching profession, In December about thirty-five new members were initiated into the club. This year the seniors were allowed to teach for a week in their selected grades. Two mem- bers attended the St. Mary's Conference this year to get new ideas for the improvement ot the club. Members also attended a conference for Future Teachers Clubs in this area, held at Wayne Uni- versity. The Gtroup's history parallels to a degree that of the real United Nations. lt was founded in 1947, and Phyllis Butterfield was its first president. Adult participation was at first high, but now the group is largely a student activity. There is one regular meeting a month. The discussions of the group are purposeful. Guest speakers are often present at our meetings. They have included foreign teachers and students and even a mission- ary from communist China. The Group program includes supplemen- tary trips to the Detroit International Institute and to Hillsdale College for Model U. U. meetings. Berkley High has several times represented Columbia in the Council of Nations and this year will represent Syria. These meetings are run iust as the U. N. proper is run. The United Nations Study Group has always been a popular group and is an excellent intellectual activity. J, Meyer, Bruce Ham- Our Varsity football team of 1955 had a rugged season, as our scores show. lt should be remembered that our new coach Howard Bailey, fielded a team with only eight returning letter- men. With the assistance ot Kenneth Barron and Robert Finley, Mr. Bailey tried to mold our boys into a team capable of meeting the veterans of the other teams in our league. Our football sea- son next year promises to be better because of the experience both the coaches and players have gained and the large number of returning letter winners. clad's night scores Let's hear it Berkley O Ferndale 25 0 Alpena 55 0 Southfield 32 O Walled Lake 25 O Van Dyke 19 0 Waterford 38 6 Farmington 13 0 Ypsilanti 26 O Birmingham 43 80 graduating lettermen T45 A J MEYER MMS SMIIEANT DON BERG in TX L DICK THOMAS MARV BENNETT BRUCE HAMMOND 'TT Xxx BRIAN WESTRATE RAY JIM HARRINGTON some of the achon that thrilled our followers KEN WEST 81 0 xg v A - X, 4 N in 5 I . .1 ,. if ' 5 - 'V qt .
