Uur Board of Education Aswe began the new school year, we were happy to know that these representatives of our parents were on hand to furnish leadership for our school community. It was accepted by us that these leaders would be able to solve the many problems of this school year, such as hiring of personnel, purchasing of equipment, and paying of bills. As the school years progressed, we realized that their more important job was planning for our educational future. Theirs was the responsibility of getting more equipment and especially more space, so that in the future every Berk1eyHigh student could getacornplete education. For accepting this responsibility, we thank the members of the Board of Education. Itwas a great opportunity for us to have a voice in governing our school. The Council, which is composed of representatives from all homerooms and or- ganizations, enables the students to co-operate with the principal and faculty in solving problems concerning the students. Among the activities undertaken by the Student Council this year were operating the refreshment stand at football and basketball games, running the magazine cam- paign, and arranging for paid assemblies and pre-game ticket sales. The Council participates in Inter-Lakes Council activities and awards a citizen- ship cup to a deserving Senior. The Student Council now includes only grades 9-12, as the Junior High formed its own Council this year. President - Don Schoenhals Vice-Pres. - Hank Henson Secretary - Kathy Fodell Treasurer - Judy Dedoes peech Some of us who were in- terested 1n public speaking organized the new Speech Club an organization de- ' f signed to teach students , how to give speeches and x how to debate. Under the guiding hand , of Miss Percival, we have been able to speak with facts and listen with in- terest the characteristics of a good speaker. Although this is anewly formed club, fwe have al- ready learned to debate and orate according to planned speech and actions. C5 '54 uh U. Our high school years were years which were filled with international crises. In order to better understand the many world problems, some of us be- longed to the United Nations Study Group.
