You’ll find what you look for—don't look for distress! If you see but your shadow, remember I pray, That the sun is still shining, but you are in the way! Don’t grumble, don’t bluster, don’t dream and don’t shirk. Don’t think of your worries, but think of your work. The worries will vanish, the work will he done— No man sees his shadow who faces the sun. —M. P. Skinner. The 1947 IVarnt Sprint) Echoes 17 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Four years ago, on one glorious September morn ninety-eight gleeful laddies and lassies awaited entrance into the halls of the best high school in the land. Now, as Seniors, we look back upon the days in pleasant reminiscence of jovial times and fellowships together. As a class we came from town and country. Our school lives were spent in outlying districts and the graded schools of the grand old town of Berkeley Springs. Some were total strangers, both to their fellow students and to the methods of high school activities. For some the transition from the grades into high school was so smooth that a change was scarcely noticed, for others the way was new and turbulent. Be it as it may, we were all one team on the same field of knowledge charging our way through, with heads up, the four years of high school. It took only a short time for us to learn that we were all the class of '47, and with this thought came the desire and will to make this, our high school career, the best of any class that was ever graduated from B. S. 11. S. All teams must have captains, so here we pay due respect to our principal, teachers and coaches who have given their unrelinquished time, knowledge and patience to prepare us for the muddy field ahead of each of us. So, to you and our high school we bid you adieu and many glorious returns. “UPON PARTING” All through the years we study, Through the first act—the climax— Just waiting for the ending, Only to find that the curtain, Is abrupt—final—descending! The tears we shed at parting. Are futile; tho’ they no feeling lack, For they are shed for the past, and, You only can see by' looking hack. The pain, tears, of all the years, Are lost now, And we must learn as ever, What’s past is gone, don’t falter looking back, As the ties of the past you sever. The time of parting is now at hand, A bitter world lies at our feet, ’Tis goodbye—heavy weighs the time, Destiny holds triumph—or defeat. And to our tensioned thoughts, A last bell—a last class—the last scene— And in reality Our childhood passes on ! Oh dream. Which loads us on in memory. —Selected. 18 The 1947 Warm Spring Echoes JUNIORS Glen wood A. Goodman “Glen” Trcas. Bob Hawvermale—Long-punting, fullback, and stellar line-smasher who has played tackle position for three years. Lloyd Golden—His dazzling 88 yard punt return against Charles Town and other long runs rate him as tops in the tail back department. Wade Frock —Scrappy guard on offense and capable line-backer on defense is a staunch and solid plug at these positions. Lence Under—A line fixture at the tackle post both on offense and defense where he played hard and well. Freddy Rankin—Blocking back, Freddy was also a fine passer and a standout as a ball carrier. Dwan McBee—Speedy, utility back who could play any position and always come through in fine fashion. Robert Spriggs—Captain elect and veteran of two grid campaigns, a fast man and a sure down-field blocker. Roy Perry — A spectacular pass-grabber with experience and the will to win is a demon to would-be ground-gainers around left end. Phil Ludwig — Versatile lineman, who played a knockdown game at left guard but was right at home at any position in the line. Herb Lopp—Handsome Herb throws tricky left hand passes and runs with flashing speed and driving power on weak-side plays. Dane Boggs—He is a glue-fingered end on the offense and should be a stand out at the flanker position next season. J. D. Iden—A small, but fast and flashy back, who flits on feathery feet and hits like a torpedo. Bob Kerns—Bob (the Rock) is agile for his generous proportions and could be a battering- ram fullback or a rugged linesman. The 1947 Warm Spring Echoes GERARD P. CALHOUN Shepherd College A.B., Coach, Mathematics Coach “Jerry” Calhoun in his first year at Berkeley Springs High has established himself as a hard worker, toiling long and late to build his teams for the future years. Under his system of coaching the Indians should get into the win column more often. 35 First row—Ralph Hooke, Dane Boggs, Herbert Yost, Robert Hawvermale, Fred Rankin, Phillip Ludwig, Dunny Dunham. Pete will be missed a lot, not for his dribbling or shooting but for his fighting spirit. Fred Rankin—A great guard who always put his heart in the game and was at his best when the chips were down. Next year’s squad will be bolstered by the return of: Phil Ludwig—He was probably the best all around player on the squad. He just couldn’t seem to have an off night. Glen Goodman—A fighting forward who you just couldn’t get excited. Herb Lopp—A southpaw forward who seemed to keep the other team guessing. Roy Perry—“Goat ’ was a steady player all the time. His passing accounted for scores on several occasions. J. D. Iden—Hampered by his height of 5 ft. 4 in. “Justin” had to be a great ball player to play with “Big Boys.” Dane Boggs—Only a Sophomore, Boopsy will be one of the finest cagers in the section with enough experience. Phil Kesecker—Small, but aggressive, a line shot, and should go great with the experience of this season behind him. Sue Ditto—The girl who can play either end of the floor. The blonde intercepting nearly every pass as a guard and shooting those effective shots as forward. Phyllis Sheppard—Phil will be greatly missed next year for her fine sportsmanship and team cooperation. Joan Rockwell—“Joan Baby” is in the game for two reasons: to win the game and to show her forward who’s boss. Donna Jean Ambrose—The team is proud to see “Ambrose” receive her letter as manager. She has worked faithfully for three years “mothering her flock.” Jean Hottel—Jean’s first year out has won her the position of center forward. Very swift on her feet, besides her accurate shooting. Kathryn Rankin—A guard that’s always in there fighting for the ball and usually gets it. The question was brought up in the previous year and a careful study of Student Government was made by the faculty and students. Other schools with an active Student Council were visited to see how the student body functioned. The students were all interested in having a government in the school, and voted overwhelmingly in favor of a council. It was decided to organize the Council during the year 1945-46 but so much time was needed for study and writing of a constitution that the actual operation of the council had to be held over to the first of this year. At the beginning of this year the student body selected by petition candidates for the office of president and vice-president and voted on them by ballot. After the president and vice-president were elected the repre- sentatives, two from each home room, were chosen by the same popular ballot method used for the election of the officers of the Council. Mr. Ilodges, Miss Mendenhall and Mr. Ludwig are the faculty representatives on the Council chosen by the other members of the faculty. The objective of the Student Council is to give the students an active part in the activities of the school, and to let them express their ideas and opinions on problems concerning the government of the school. Meetings are held once a month and all problems of each class are discussed before the council. The council has done excellent work in arranging noontime activities for all of the students. Committees have been chosen by the president to see that the noontime recreation program is carried out. During the noontime dancing is held in the auditorium for those who are interested. Basketball games are held every day in the gymnasium by different classes. This not only furnishes enjoyment for the students but helps to develop basketball players. These games are very exciting and the student body really enjoys them. Occasionally movies are shown in the auditorium. These movies are both educational and interesting. The Vo-Ag room is open for games such as checkers, dominoes and caroms. Rooms are kept open for students who desire social visitations. In the future the Student Council will prove to be a valuable asset to the school.
