A FS The American Field Service was started by World War II ambulance drivers in an effort to combat the cultural ignorance they felt was responsible for war. Today A.F.S. has chapters nationwide and sends over 2000 U.S. students overseas yearly. Starting in September, prospective A.F.S travelers complete a series of applications, essays, and interviews that determine whether their personalities are compatible with the challenges a foreign stay presents. Then students are matched up with a foreign family. Recent BHS travelers have gone to Tunisia, Italy, Yugoslavia, France, Spain, Japan, Columbia, Canada, and Peru, to name a few! Suzanne Eisenberg, who visited Tunisia on the A.F.S. program, wrote home: Gina ' s brother Semi took us out to a really ritzy disco club. There was a little old man just staring at me the whole time I was dancing. When we left, he asked Semi if he could marry me for a thousand camels! Noah Parker, who spent last summer in Costa Rica, said the people he met were very hospitable, warm, strong- willed. Reuben Margolin and John Colton both went to Indonesia. John Colton was pleased with the organization ' s well-run program; Reuben was wowed by the exotic fruits, while Paul Schuchert enjoyed duck hunting in Chile. This year ' s BHS A.F.S. chapter was sponsored by Mr. Dean and led by co-presidents Perrin Meyer and Reuben Margolin. Page 70

Pottery ' s Playhouse The Clay Club was formed by water and the decomposition of igneous rock... no, wart! The Clay Club is really made up of a repressed bunch of individuals who are urgently working out their frustrations in mushy, gushy clay. Actually, it ' s the first period Pottery Class. Most of which consists of Seniors who are desperately avoiding academia in the wee hours of the cruel morning. This glorified encounter group is headed by Sarah Church and Jessica Beymer, the illustrious Porcelain Bitches from Hell whose motto is If it feels good, squish the hell out of it! Their advisor, Mr. Best (A.K.A. The Big Porcelain Kahuna ), tirelessly criss-crosses the globe in search of superior forms of dirt. This summer, in fact, he plans a whirlwind tour of the South Pacific to aid Third World potters in their pursuit of the centered slab... Membership is open to all those who are interested, however, ascending to the totalitarian P.B.H. proverb, strong hands are highly desirable. In 1988 the Club took a strong stand regarding CJaymation, saying Marvin Gaye songs and raisins are fine, but Bon Jovi and American Cheese will not be tolerated. Besides an all-encompassing adoration of clay, the group also demonstrates an avid interest in other art forms. In fact, members participate in operetic singing, drama, painting, dance, and creative writing. By the end of the year, they plan to release a 45 single containing their rendition of the Puccini opera La Boheme, and a book of short stories tentatively titled Potter ' s Home Erotica. Page 69

Originally, The Experiment was begun by a British doctor who sent a handful of English prepschool students to live with Swiss families for a month during the summer. The Experiment now sends students of all nationalities from all socioeconomic backgrounds to stay with families in 27 countries from Argentina to the U.S.S.R. In the summer of 1987, 24 Berkeley High School students Experimented, making BHS the most Experimental school in the nation. The main goal of this global affair is to build international friendships on a personal level in the hopes of breaking the barrier of universal ignorance, replacing it with a foundation of understanding on a world level. Alumni reminesce fondly of their voyages: It was a growing experience; you ' re really on your own. smiles one experimental student. Advice from a recent experimentalist Leon Kenin: It ' s up to you to take the initial risk, for what will surely turn out to be the chance of a lifetime. . .
