»« He ran right out of the yearbook last year, but here, in a rare moment, Chris Burger is captured on film once again running one of his many great races. It was a very good season. Many people ran to their maximum potential. Next year should be even better as more and more people are realizing the value of Cross Country to help get in shape for other sports . - - Coach Ward Cross Country is a great sport because the whole team comes together like a family. - - Shala Erlich (left) It ' s a tough sport, but it ' s also ver) rewarding. - - Laura Chiera (right) Cross Country is mostly mental and so are its benefits. Running has helped me set and reach goals, and learning to set goals has helped me in all aspects of my life- - not just athletics. I ' m really looking forward to next year. - - Sean Lewis (Sophomore) Cynthia Aiidredge courageously battling the pain at GBAL. Rebecca Foote guts it out. 25

w ould you rather die or run? Most would prefer death. The rest run Berkeley High Cross Country. The 1986 season started on a very promising note. A record of over fifty people showed on the first day of practice. Much of this enthusiasm was short lived as newcomers found for the first time that practice would begin before the sun comes up. A few decided they would end up more healthy if they got their usual amount of sleep rather than a five miler in the morning. But for those who stuck it out, the season was a rewarding experience. The men ' s season was highlighted by a GBAL victory, a third place at NCS 3A, and a sixth place at the NCS Meet of Champions. It was senior Chris Burger leading the way. High expectations were layed out for him, and he met them. He placed second at the Artichoke Invitational, eighth at Stanford, and twelfth at the Nor Cal Championships, a race only he from the team qualified for. Following Burger were all league performers juniors Ben Turman (second at league), Brent Halvonik, and senior Jesse Malkin, sophomore Sean Lewis was the team ' s fifth man, and senior Noah Kanter and sophomore Chris Heine rounded out the team. For the women, the season came to a disappointing close at the GBAL meet where they finished third. Only two teams advanced. Overall, it was a fine year, highlighted by a win at the Lowell Invitaional. The women were led by reliable senior Catherine Payne (second at league) and junior Catherine Zinn, both of whom qualified as individuals for the North Coast 3A meet. Following Zinn closely all season was ever improving Sarah Conning. Other top runners were: Rebecca Foote, Alex Gorin, Amantia Le Mon, and Gabby Marks. Jesse Malkin. The man.
