The most important respons- ability of a class officer is to involve students in that class ' years at B.H.S. ; To make it an exciting and educational experience. Co-Presidents Sybil Robinson Alex Kon Salvaged the hopeless financial situation facing the Senior Class. They acted as organizers to the very competent senior class officers Noah Breyr, and Karen Collins (Vice-Presidents), LaShon Smith and Yvette Russell (Sec- retaries), and Jessica Jones (trea- surer). These people, along with the entire leadership class were able to plan the best prom at the Gal- leria in years and to secure the Greek theater for the 1984 grad- uation ceremonies. They planned senior trips, activities, and fund- raisers. They had a busy year but if asked to, they would do it all again. 24

6. The Fall Senate was extremely successful. Its most noted action was the forum held at lunchtime in the Community Theatre on Op- eration Stay In School , which would have led to the arrest of any student caught off campus before 11:1 5a.m. Thanks in part to the Student Senate, both the Police Review Commission and the School Board voted against insti- tuting the plan. The senate pres- ident was Ay a DeLeon, who shot an innocent student in her cam- paign speech, and the vice-president was Auna Harris. The Spring Senate carried on its fine tradition of addressing the con- troversial issues affecting Berkeley High Students. In fact, they were doing it even before they were elected. The Senate election itself was marred by the blatently unlaw- ful censorship of campaing speeches by the administration. Paul Bud- nitz, running on a platform of fris- bee legalization and library Bunk- ness , became President, and Sliawn Roberts was elected vice- president. The Senate met twice a week to attack whatever issue stood in its way, be it flags on campus or the PE Department ' s Attendance Policy. Senate members, an ex- plosive melange of liberal and con- servative, found themselves in heated arguments over just about everyproposal brought before them. Soon the Senate found itslef being hailed as The best show in town by the SF Chronicle and the New York Times. People came to Sen- ate meetings from miles around to see Aya DeLeon take on Declan Byrne and Ismail Ramsey in one of their notorious no-holes-barred arguments. Meanwhile, the Senate got some work done too. As Spring President Budnitz once said, The Senate is real . 1. While Yvette eats lunch Ismail gives tips on Parliamentty Procedure to Declan ' s Disgust. 2. Shawn presents himself to the Senate . 3. The Student Senate: Front Row: Sharon Benford, Noah Breyer, Kerri Glover, Helena Hanson, Brian Butler, Back Row: Ann, Auna Harris, Geof- frey Spaeth,?, Marilyn Penurgrian, Declan Byrne, Ismail Ramsey, Paul Budnitz, Aya Fredericks, Shawn Roberts, Betsy Craib. 4. Fall Vice-President Auna Harris and president Aya Fredericks. 5. Spring Vice-President Shawn Roberts and President Paul Budnitz . 6.Jodi Margolies and Betsy Craib work on fundraisers. 7. Declan Byrne discusses an issue with President Paul Budnitz. 23
