3 Although this year ' s Asian Student Union had a slow start, they were able to come together with many fundraisers and activities. The annual Valentines Day carnation sale was a booming success along with a car wash, snow cone sale, dance, and many other events. This years advisor was Luchi Labos-Simpao. She took off valuable time to assist board members in running the meetings as well as contributing ideas. Special thanks to our hardworking president and graduationg senior Chris Kumai, and Mr. Isono for his cooperation and patience. 1. This Fall, the Jacket faced many ob- stacles before it was able to put out the traditionally excellent newspaper that has become commonplace at Berkeley High. First of all, the Jacket ' s budget was cut to virtually nothing by the new school administration. Because of this, the staff was forced to go out and sell advertising before it was able to pub- lish. This, coupled with the fact that the staff had a new advisor, and very few returning student members, proved to slow things down considerably. Led by the somewhat apathetic Editor-in-Chief, Dan Waxman, the fall staff prodded along, coming out with seven issues in the first semester. Staff members included the passively macho Associate Editor, Robert Lau; the short but stern News Editor, David Schellhase; occasional Editorial Editor, Norman Gee; staff jock Feature Editor, Talia Sternberg; the always serious Sports Editor, Bill Feingold; Greek correspondent Cartoonist, Jess Clark; the abnormally normal photography editor, Raoul Modecke; the staff pseudo-stud, Justin Lena; and last, but not least, the meek and timid staff advisor, Jan (Buckethead) Becket. As they plodded along through the year, though, this motley assortment of people managed to put out some half- decent (or at least provocative) issues. 30
