The Afrikan Student Association is a cultural, political, educational society of students who are proud of their Afrikan ancestry and culture. The A.S.A. is a continuation of the origional Black Student Union, which, in 1968, through struggles and determination, were able to establish the Black Studies Department. Today, the A.S.A. carries on that legacy of struggle in order to maintain the pre- sent Afrikan American Studies Depart- ment. They truly believe that: Black students and the Black com- munity demanded Black studies. . . This we must never forget. Since black people are responsible for keeping their baby (Black Studies) fed and clothed, if it should die from malnu- trition or lack of affection, then it is the black students and the black com- munity that will be at fault. . .not the system. The A.S.A. is dedicated to keep up their end of the struggle.

Using their anthem “Lift every voice and sing as a doctrine, the Sons of Af- rica strived to achieve their Afrikan un- ity. Led by president Rod Lancaster, and sponsor Osci Austin, the Sons of Afrika met many times to discuss the current problems of blacks. Their main objective is to promote the culture and true history of the black man in America. 24
