22 MESA, which stands for Mathe- matics, Engineering, and Science Achievement, is an organization de- signed to increase the number of under- represented minorities in these math- amatics related areas. Through MESA, students receive educational enrichment experiences, and the help they need to prepare themselves for university level programs. Services offered include tutoring, independent study groups, career counseling, field trips, and summer enrichment and employment programs. These activities serve to involve the students in the more advanced classes. Berkeley High ' s Mesa had another fantastic year because of its popu- larity among the students, and the outstanding efforts of Mr. Ward, the Advisor, and student president Alan Shaw. Alan ' s responsibi lites include planning their monthly calendar of events and organizing meetings and fundraisers. Funds go to the MESA account for their annual banquet in May and the remainder goes to parent meetings. 3 .

Using their anthem “Lift every voice and sing as a doctrine, the Sons of Af- rica strived to achieve their Afrikan un- ity. Led by president Rod Lancaster, and sponsor Osci Austin, the Sons of Afrika met many times to discuss the current problems of blacks. Their main objective is to promote the culture and true history of the black man in America. 24
