ponsibility, Science Department assisted in lighting effects, Physical Education was in charge of dancing, Music Department organized the orches- tra, and the English Department supervized the staging of the play. A Shakespearean play was presented every Spring, admission was 25 cents. In the area of publications, the Olla Podrida Yearbook was presented semi-annually. It con- sisted primarily of articles rather than pictures and reserved a space for (corny) jokes at the end of the book. As the years passed, the book became more and more picture oriented. The Weekly News presented its first publication in Spring 1912, and from then on came out every Monday morning. It printed accounts of school events and attempted to represent the great variety of interests of the students. A fee of $1.00 was collected annually from each student as the subscription price. Advertisements were a source of income as well.

Finally, in 1900, money for the building was granted and with the building ' s construction the school rapidly developed into one of the largest and best on the Pacific coast. Then, several years later in the earthquake of 1906, Berkeley High once again experienced its previous lack of room. Reparation was set up and the land adjoining the old High School building was purchased. With the establishment of its fine academic standards, the students began a reputation of excellence that was to carry on for 100 years. Several clubs that began in 1900 are also present in 1980. The dramatic club existed as a sign of cooperation between various departments of the school. The Art Department designed the costumes, Household Art Department made them, Mechanical Art Department built the stage, Commercial Department took on financial res-
