During this seemingly short period of time it has been my extremely good fortune to have been associated with the greatest people in the world: the students who have prog- ressed through our schools, their parents and many other citizens of our community. I consider it the rarest of privileges to have been associated with you and I sincerely hope that I have had some positive influence upon your happiness and well being. There is no job that could have more appeal to me than that of being Principal of Berkeley High School. It has been a great challenge and a real privilege to have served you. Upon my retirement at the conclusion of the present school year, I shall always have the fondest memories of what I con- sider to be one of the great school systems in the United States. Your Principal, 3 Teachers and Administration photo by Caleb Chan 5 Administrators Deal With New ideas were initiated this year as a result of mutual stu- dent, faculty, and administration interest. The initiation of non- mandatory study halls brought the reopening of the student union which was previously closed because of cutting and stealing. Within the student union students are allowed to eat, listen to the radio, and play cards. With the Block B split from the BOC, student body fee holders were admitted to all the home athletic events free. New ideas still to be worked on involve a school within a school concept where each class has its own deans and central building, a student panel for reviewing referrals and suspen- sions, and new attendance procedures with the possibility of a student time clock instead of glassy stares from attendance personnel. Adapts Mr. Wenrich, head of the counseling department, is a regular counselor, the BHS representative in meetings with college representatives and the scholar- ship chairman. As department chairman, he has charge of the everyday opera- tions of the department and the orientation of new counselors. In 1968-69, minority students saw an increasing emphasis on their needs. The high school hired three new Black counselors; Mrs. Samantha Lee, Mr. Douglas Curliss and Mr. Calvin Anderson. Two counselors-in-training from San Francisco State College, a Mexican-American, Miss Patricia Martinez and a Black, Mr. Mack Williams, assisted the counseling staff and learned to work with a diverse student body. The counseling department aids the student in every aspect of his high school life. The counselors provide help in personal and family problems and educational assistance in selection of courses and vocational planning. MRS. HELEN CASSIDY 12th Grade Counselor 10 MR. The Afro-American Literature course deals with folk tales, prose and poetry by Black people in America. The students study Black writers such as Phylis Wheatly, Paul Dunbar, W.E.B. Dubois and James Johnson. They also study work of popular and less known but excellent Black modern writers. It is now an elective for 12th graders and may be taken by 11th grade students. The Afro-American Journalism course is a study of mass communications media and its effect on the Black community. The- Black press and topics dealing with publicity, public relations and propaganda are covered with the possibility of publishing a magazine or news- letter. MR. HERBERT CONSTANT Since it offers more than fourteen different types of classes, the Industrial Arts Department is probably one of the most diverse at BHS. One of the new ideas to be tried is a program call Career Explorations. This enables students involved in the department to spend half of the day working on different projects for com- munity improvement. This program originally applied in the summer session, according to Mr. Rajander, the department head, was continued in the spring semester. Other programs tried during the year were flexible sched- uling and open laboratory. The experiment allowed students not involved in the Industrial Arts Department to come in and work on any type project provided the student has passed the necessary safety test. MR. ROBERT RAJANDER Curriculum Associate for Industrial Arts and Coordinator of Vocational Education MR. PHILIP ST. MARTIN MR. PHILIP PAULL 20 PAD Department Most Active As the most active department at BHS, PAD supplied talent for all plays, school concerts and dance productions, provided half-time shows, traveled to various music festivals and competed with other high school and college groups for awards. In addition, the department plann ed to initiate several new courses and expand its present classes. Mr. Haynes, Orchestra conductor, completed a tour in Africa last summer, exploring the possibility of offering a separate class on African music rather than including it within the music course. MR. ROBERT PEARSON Curriculum Associate for Performing Arts MRS. JACQUELINE HARDESTER MR. ROBERT ONSTAD MR. THOMAS HAYNES MR. The Social Living Department, one of the two smallest de- partments of the school has one full-time, two half-time teachers and a curriculum associate. The course began in the 1964-65 year when a group of students requested a course dealing with drugs and sex education. A tenth grade pilot course was held in the spring of 1965. The next year, in 1966, one-half of the tenth grade students were placed in the course. In 1967 and 1968, the course was established as a required tenth grade course. Mr. Trainor, curriculum associate, mentioned that the big problems are the facilities, the condition of the classrooms in M-3 and M-4 and the noise of traffic on street. The ideal department, described by Mr. Trainor, would have smaller classes and lounge furniture would be introduced to produce more of the casual seminarial effect. There would be enough money and a class schedule flexible enough to allow for field trips. An unsolvable and recurrent problem is the lack of in- formation describing and evaluating new materials. As a result, there is no opportunity for the teacher to evaluate the books or films before the class sees them. Mr. Trainor mentioned that his department was successful because it was heterogeneous, both racially and academically. The students were involved in setting up the class projects. The class also discussed topics relevant to the teenager. Things that were new for 1969 included in-service training for all the teachers and the rise of use of television. The teachers also planned to use a video-tape set up to evaluate teachers and the effectiveness of student participation. MR. JAMES TRAINOR Curriculum Associate for Social Living MRS. ROSALIND SINGER Social Living students construct a poster during class. -)z MISS JOYCE ANDERSON Swahili Scheduled For Spring Semester MR. DONALD SCHRUMP MR. JORGE CHAVEZ Curriculum for the Foreign Language Department changed drastically this year. Most radical of these innovations was the scheduling of an East African language, Swahili, into the spring semester. Another important revision was the use of new texts from Encyclopedia Britannica in all Spanish and German classes. This series of books was also extended to the Berkeley secondary schools, providing unification and better opportunities for individual advance- ment. Approximately one-half the student body is involved in the department making it one of the largest in the school. Mr. Trentacoste, department chair- man, attributed most of the success of the department to its well qualified faculty members and the respect Berkeleyans have for foreign languages. MR. OLIVER WASHBURN Curriculum Associate for Foreign Languages MRS. ERICKA PILLARS MRS. JOYCE NEWCOMER MISS ARLENE REPETTO MISS BEATRICE ROOST MRS. MARY SMALL MR. JOSEPH TRENTACOSTE MR. HENRY LORENZO ■HHP MRS. BEVERLY MAIMONI 24 Gourmet Foods Offered By Home Economics Dept. Courses available to students last year through the Home Economics De- partment included gourmet foods, nursery teacher aide and hospital ancillary training service. Gourmet foods proved the department ' s most popular course of last year. Offered to both sexes, the class was student-directed and participants were able to cook foods of any type. Twice each month an instructor demonstrated cooking techniques for some of the basic soul foods: beans and chitterlings, pork and others. In nursery teacher aide, the students traveled to nurseries in the Berkeley School District, while hospital ancillary training service participants were taught various medical courses at either Alta Bates or another local hospital. Because of a great demand for nurses, social workers and health related professionals, Department Chairman, Mrs. Gertrude Tenny urges more students to take part in the home economics program. MRS. MARGARET LARSON Curriculum Associate for Home Economics Dept. MISS CAROLINE MRS. GERTRUDE RONE TENNY Dept. Head MARION WALKER, TINA MAIN REGINA PRIDGEON, MRS. CHRISTIE CHEF JAMES SIMON 25 i racking Eliminated In U.S. History I and II; MR. THOMAS JOHNSON MR. PHILIP LUKS MISS JAYNE MILLAR 26 MRS. F. JO MOHRBACH MISS VIRGINIA THICKENS Curriculum Associate for History New Course in African Civilization Initiated Lower course requirements, new electives and heterogeneous classes were approved for the History Department by the School Board last November. Pro- posed by Department Chairman, A. J. Tudisco, the plan was effective during the spring semester. Under the new program, U.S. History-Government I and II, and two semesters of any elective were re- quired for graduation. U.S. I and II became heterogen- eous, thus eliminating tracking within the department. As electives, all other courses had open enrollment. Two new courses in African Civilization were planned for the spring semester. These classes were a result of student petitions circulated in the fall request- ing these courses and were a joint project with the Foreign Language Department. As the result of a campaign by two BHS students during Black History and Culture Week in 1968, Swahili and Igbo languages were taught for six weeks in the Negro in America classes. The teachers were Joshua Omange from Kenya teaching Swahili and Eleazar Ofodile from Biafra, teaching Igbo. MR. JULIUS SUSTARIC MRS. JANET YOUNG MISS THOMASINE WILSON 27 experimental Community High School At BHS MR. JAY MANLEY Director Drama MR. CARL BRUSH English MR. PETER KLEINBARD Drama MRS. SUSAN BEMENT History Community High School, originated by Jay Manley and Peter Kleinbard, got underway the spring semester and truly was a unique experience for all those involved. The experimental school, which took place within Berkeley High, stemmed from the Berkeley Summer Project and main hopes were to solve some of the problems facing a large urban school such as Berkeley High. The project proposed to provide a method by which the large school could humanize the learning process and the environment in which it was taught. One of the key factors used to accomplish this was a totally integrated system. 116 tenth graders were chosen at random to create a racially and intellectually mixed student body. Classes were grouped heterogeneously; it was hoped that total in- tegration would occur not only physically but also in the sharing of ideas and thoughts, It was planned that the student would be involved with CHS each day from 10:30-3:00. The first three periods would be spent taking whatever electives he so desired. The remainder of the day would consist of English, Science, Drama, Art and Dance classes where he would be given full college credit. Because the instructors would be working together very closely, the schedule would vary day to day making it possible for the classes to go into their projects and ideas at length. It was hoped that the original tenth grade class would continue and become the school ' s first graduating class. Next year as the present class moves up a grade, a new group of tenth graders will be admitted thus moving the enrollment to about 230. There are several specific goals it hoped to accomplish on a mass scale such as the formation of a truly intergrated system and the development of a curriculum stimulating to both the students and ■the faculty. Above all, CHS hoped to provide an atmosphere in which teacher and student can learn from one another. It is in this way, communication between staff and students, that they hope a real feeling of community education will develop. 28 Special Education Dept. Encourages Students MRS. Clarence Hampton was named Curriculum Associate for Black Studies on November first and has spent the past months perfecting the program. New Black teachers were hired (another one of the demands made by the BSU) to teach the new courses. Hampton emphasized hiring Black teachers for students to identify with. Black teachers establish rap- port with Black students. Since Black teachers have experienced these prob- lems, students can relate to their experiences. Hampton added that White teachers can help tremendously by integrating the materials of their courses and by seeing that they are well taught. The new courses are Afro-American Literature, Afro-American Economics, Afro-American Journalism, Swahili, Afro-Haitian dance, African Civilization and the expansion of two classes that already existed, History of Jazz and Afro- American History. Besides the newly hired teachers, Mrs. Ellane Hammond teaches History, Mr. Eugene Brooks with Afro-Economics, Mrs. Jacqueline White and Mrs. Letitia, Woodson, both with Afro-American Literature, Mr. Wil- liam Reidsema with Journalism (whose class produced its own newspaper, The Ujamaa), and Mr. William Elliott assisted Mrs. Jacqueline Hardester teaching the History of Jazz. He worked conscientiously and never com- plained about anything unless he was in a position to correct it. His emotions were intense; he cared. He highly believed in the things he did. Most teachers liked him. He worked hard and diligently, always trying his best. He quite often berated himself for not attaining his goals, though to most people, they seemed quite impossible. Although most boys would never practice physical education at home for an intramural meet, Douglas took time out to do so. He met death in an accident practicing for a gymnastics meet. Douglas ' attitude toward school was determination for good grades, knowl- edge, and a worthy future. He was a straight-A student, not average by any means. He was a perfectionist to many people; indeed, an extraordinary person. The exemplary citizenship and outstanding scholarship of Douglas Lum will not be forgotten. 140 photo by Caleb Chan Homecoming Queen Crowned On Nov. 1, the day of the BHS-Kennedy football game, Debra Jones was chosen as the 1968 Home- coming Queen. Nevertheless the Yellow Jackets won twenty games against twelve de- feats overall and were twelve and six in league play. All league selections Pat Cooley and Tony Le Blanc led the scrappy Jackets along with floor leader Dan Palley, 6 ' 9 center John Lambert and Ken Rich- ard rounding out the starting quintet. Marvin Buckley also played a dominant role as the sixth man alternating between forward and guard. The Jackets finished the first round of league play tied with Richmond for first place with a record of eight and one. The Berkeleyans lost their league opener to Kennedy 81-79 but come on strong to win eight straight including a win over Richmond, 61-59, Pat Cooley pouring in 35 points, and a win over El Cerrito 59-56. The second round was complete disaster for the Jackets as they could win only four games compared to five losses, losing heartbreakers to Richmond, 81-78, in double overtime and to El Cerrito in over- time, 68-64. In the Shaughnessy playoffs, the Jackets blew a sixteen point halftime lead to El Cerrito in the open- ing game, 63-59. John, who badly defeated his big rival from El Cerrito for first place, went on to become the first Berkeley Cross Country runner to make the North Coast finals in a good many years. Few came out this year, but what Berkeley lacked in attendance it made up in spirit, beating o ther larger schools. Few runners made the JV team very weak with two runners who did qualify for JV usually sub- stituting for absent varsity runners. Those who did come out are juniors Kam Wong and Kenneth Bryant. In their first meet of the 1969 season, the varsity 8 completely swamped Oakland, blitz- ing to a record time of 4:39.5, a record which had never been equalled at Aquatic Park. In subse- quent races, Salesian, Fremont and even defend- ing champion Skyline felt what it is like to row in the wake of fhe mighty Jacket oarsmen. Varsity Crew Members: Jose Malavy, E. J. Collins, Eddie Young, Bruce Krieder, David Guffy, Larry Caine, Alex Frasco, Mike Greene, Douglas Chun. photo by Robert Schaeffer Though shadowed by their big brothers, the JV Crew is an impressive team in their own right. Mainly composed of first-year men, the JV ' s rowed surprisingly well to defeat Salesian after losing to Skyline. Look to the JV ' s to bring home a championship next year. The lightweight four, a lean and hungry crew consisting of Mike Green (stroke), Douglas Chun, Tom Wood, Richard Stitt and coxwain Larry Brickell, rowed past Salesian, Skyline and Fre- mont to muscle their way to the BARL finals. In a hard fought row against Salesian, the light- weights brought home the crown, a Berkeley first. In the heavyweight division, E. J. Collins (stroke), David Guffy, Bruce Kreider, Eddie Young and coxswain Joe Malaver handed Salesian solid defeats on two occasions, but barely lost out to St. Joseph ' s twice. Nevertheless, they won a berth to the finals and proved themselves the best in the bay area. JV crew team: front row; Richard Stitt, Tom Wood, Larry Brickell (coxwain), Mike Anderson, Mike Caine. With new head coach Tom Pearse at the reins, the Jacket nine once again fought a tough battle with the Richmond Oilers for the ACAL champion- ship. Three year starter Bugs Stevens led a fine group of Berkeley mound-men into the ACAL campaign. An ex- ample of the Jackets ability is the fact that he was con- tacted by scouts from two professional ball teams — and in the words of coach Tom Pearse, Bugs is one of the finest pitchers in the area and one of the easiest people on the team to coach. Stevens was not the whole show as Mike Allen and Ken Nakamura were both im- pressive on the year. Allen plagued by a sore arm before the season and a fractured finger during the season still managed to pitch impressive ball. . . and the ball park was shaken by the force of Mike Allen’s throw.” photo by Howard Coleston In the hitting department Victor Brown, brother of former Jacket star Norman Brown, supplied most of the power all season long as he batted well into the 300 ' s. Also supporting Brown with their bats were junior Roy Phelps who batted in the 300 ' s all year, and twin brothers Chris and Steve Yoshimura, who also batted over 300 throughout the year. Defensively the arms of Brown, juniors Billy King and Glenn Burke in the outfield kept Jacket opponents from attempting to get extra bases. The hot spots were manned by Phelps at first and Richard Boschetti at third, both of whom battled for the team field- ing percentage lead. Finally the double play combination of John Henderson and Steve Yoshimura and the fine arm of catcher Christ Yoshimura kept many of the Jacket opponents from getting as far as thi rd base. . The events included an exchange conducted by the 85 member chorale with Tempe Union High School in Tempe, Arizona. The Chorale traveled to Tempe during Easter vacation. The trip was financed by chocolate bar sales and a car bash, and included, besides their well-received concert in Tempe, a visit to Grand Canyon, Montezuma Wells, and Montezuma Castle. Other events were concerts in the Cal State Chorale Workshop at Hayward in October, with the Performing Art Dept. ' s Serenade to Music and a choir festival at West Campus in May. The Concert Chorale was a fantastic group of voices, well-received everywhere they performed. It was an exciting year for them and for those for whom they performed. . . . and the Band Played On Pep Band leader Kent Stewart in action during one of Berkeley’s home basketball games. photo by Howard Coleston (l.-r.): Gerald Williams, Tim Shelley, Danny Mitchell, John Cutler, Marty Inouye, Jon Singer, Steve Cannon, of the Pep Band, play and inspire our basketball players, at one of the many games. photo by Linda Wong (l.-r.): Dave Ellis, Alice Tetlow, Joe Feller. Several graduated seniors returned to make the production possible. Miriam Berkley and Mike Tor- rence turned in excellent performances to a rather sparse audience. Raisin in the Sun written by Loiraine Hansburry is the story of a negro family in the Chicago ghetto, their son Walter Lee, and his struggle to attain manhood in a white world. Senior Mark Batterman was lighting director and in charge of set design. The cast was: Mike Torrence as Walter Lee, Toni Scott as Mama, Sandy Russ as Beneatha, Miriam Berkley as Ruth, Arthur Ward as Joseph Asaigai, Walter Stewart as George, Larry Garrison as Bobo, Kevin Massey as Travis, and Bill Coffin as Lindner. Last semester the BHS Drama Dept., directed by J. Manley, presented their production of “A Raisin in the Sun.” The play began with a black family inheriting $10,000 and the remainder of the play shows how this inheritance affects the family. In this scene Calvin DeBerry as Wong, the Water Seller, is shown surrounded by others in the cast. More than forty actors and actresses appeared in the production. Although the play took place in the Orient, it was designed to represent any poverty area. The fall play, The Good Woman of Setzuan, written by Bertolt Brecht and directed by Jay Manley, was a serious comedy dealing with three gods who search the world for a good person, and find one — a prostitute named Shen Te. The gods give her some money in order to start a tobacco shop and lead a respectable life but the local inhabitants of the slums freeload off her kindness and Shen Te finds herself in a difficult situation: how to be good without being bad. The naive gods leave the stage in a pink cloud, willing to overlook the fact that Shen Te has bad faults as well as good ones. Finally, it is left up to the audience to solve their own problems. The cast of Good Woman of Setzuan included: Gods Steve Adams, Gaye Welles, Lisa Brennis Shen Te Cici McCarthy Yang Sun Allan Mosher, Phil Wilson Barber Arthur Scott Policeman Steve Wasserman Mother Kathy Atkins Father Eric Johnson Sister Sandy Russ Brother Sherrick Slattery Mrs. Mi Tzu - Leni Schwendinger Wong - Calvin DeBerry Grandfather Stuart Moody Raisin in the Sun”: Two Dramatic Greats One of the major events of the fall semester was the production of Brecht’s “Good Woman of Setzuan.” Cici McCarthy as the Good Woman and Phil Wilson as Yang Sun are shown here in a scene from the play. The play is based on the arrival of three gods in the poverty-ridden village of Setzuan and their search for a truly good person. The BHS used this theme to also portray many of today’s problems. Shown are Cici McCarthy, Allan Mosher. photo by Japy Danton The play used many creative methods to enhance the effectiveness of the play. The use of a series of movies in the background and a fine musical score by Paul Machlis, David Levin- son, and Dave McBride added greatly to the play. Shown is Stuart Moody as the grandfather. 187 “Purlie” and “Andorra 5 5 Themes Depict 01’ Cap’n Cotchipee (Martin Weber is emotionally moved after the crafty Purlie Victorious (Walter Stewart) right, has named him ‘‘Great White Father of the Year.” Gitlow Judson (Kevin Mas- sey) looks on with disapproval. photo by Robert Schaeffer PAD ' s spring production of Purlie Victorious attempted to por- tray a view of racism through comedy. The play, an adaptation of Ossie Davis ' Broadway play Gone Are the Days, was performed on alternate nights with Andorra another play with racism as its theme. Purlie is about the conflicts between OT Cap ' n Cotchipee, a southern plantation owner, and a group of Negro workers led by Purlie Victorious Judson. Purlie sets out to liberate the Negro people by trying to relieve Cotchipee of a $500 inheritance due Purlie ' s cousin Bea. The play, not very subtly, depends on quick action, old racial cliches and archetypal characters to make its point. Deserving thanks also, to dedicated proctors who came to class anxious to work so the class of 1969 would not leave empty handed. I was surprised to find so little student interest in the pro- duction of our yearbook. With as much talent as our school has to offer, one would expect at least a small percentage of the student body to be more than willing to devote one period daily to the annual. Yet this year ' s POD was conceived and put together primarily by three students who spent hundreds of tedious hours scheduling pictures and experimenting with layout. Though I see more improvements in forthcoming POD ' s, we think the 1969 Olla Podrida is the best to date. This year Berkeley High School has observed one of the most dramatic cultural and academic changes in its history, motivated by the newly formed Black Student Union. The BSU went to the Board of Education last October in order to have its fourteen de- mands implemented which included: the formation of a Black Curriculum Committee, student initiated courses, the hiring of a Black Curriculum Associate, implementation of various Black courses, more black literature in the school library, in-service training for all teachers, more minority teachers and administrators, the introduction of soul food in the cafeteria and cooking classes, African dancing classes, the elimination of tracking, all racist teachers removed, and the removal of all hall supervisors (the latter demand was later repealed by the BSU). The result of all this effort by the BSU is the implementation of the Black Studies Program at BHS which is one of the first in the nation. This program includes classes of Afro-American Literature, Afro-American History, Afro-American Journalism, Afro-American Economics, African Civilization, Swahili, History of Jazz, and Afri- can Dance. The Black Studies Curriculum Associate is Mr. Clar- ence Hampton. Soul food was introduced for a time in the cafeteria and in some of the cooking classes. The BSU has proved to be the most influential organization at BHS, its effects are obviously far-reaching, and many students, white as well as black, have benefited from its efforts. Gaye Welles is a sweet young lady from Australia. She has a very English accent and if you ask her, she will tell you all about kangaroos, koala bears, and wallabys. She plays her cello which she keeps as neat as a fiddle and she was one of the main characters in the fall play, Good Woman of Sefzuan. Felicitas Frank is from Germany and has found her place here in the Performing Arts Department. She did a real bang-up smashing job on the light crew of one of the spring plays, Andorra. Berkeley ' s Students Concern Committee planned Breakthrough days for one day each month with regular evaluations of progress. After the groups had met, it was discovered that at- tendance had been low as students had used non-man- datory time to stay away from school. Some groups, too few, were successful and of these the early morning assembly proved to have highest attendance.
