PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Mr. Emery Curtice Upon examination of the records of the June graduation class, I am assured that the long- standing tradition of academic excellence at Berkeley High School will continue. During the 1966-1967 school year, Berkeley High School will be involved in a self-evaluation study and accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This accreditation study, which is now sponsored by the W.A.S.C., was, until a few years ago, the responsibility of the Uni- versity of California. This study will involve all certificated and classified personnel as well as students and all of their related activities. It is interesting to note that Berkeley High School was the first accredited high school in the State of California and has served as a pace-setter ever since. One hundred thirty-nine students of the June, 1964, graduation class who attended the University of California, placed Berkeley High School in first place in terms of grades received in their freshman year. Berkeley High has been among the top three schools in California in that respect for the past twenty years. Berkeley High is also well known in other fields such as Drama, Business, Music, Industrial Arts, Physical Education, Art, Home Economics and the many Special Educational programs. A B.H.S. graduate of a few years ago recently said to me, With the faculty you have at Berke- ley High School a student can ' t miss getting a good education. He was a non-college prep student, earning an excellent salary. On behalf of the entire staff at Berkeley High, may you carry out the Berkeley High School tradition with dignity and pride. Your Principal, EMERY J. CURTICE 2

OLLA PODRIDA EDITORS Co-Editors: Left: Judy Stuart Right: Jim Coleman This semester marks the end of our stay at Berkeley High School. Our class has seen many changes in the three years we have been here — in the passing of new rules and regulations that will benefit future students and in the construction of new facilities to enhance the molding of future leaders. Our campus is one of the few academically free campuses in the nation. This has been achieved by our hard work through the years. The classes before us, our class, and the ones to come have and will continue to keep the free- dom which Berkeley High School students now enjoy. Signed :, 1

Miss Nova Bartlett If students would leave things a little better than they found them, this would be a better world. This is Miss Nova Bartfett ' s parting message to Berkeley High School students after teaching here for forty consecutive years. Miss Bartlett graduated from the California College of Arts and Craft in June, 1925, and started teaching in Berkeley that fall. She came to Berkeley High School one year later and she has taught art here consecutively except 1950-1951 when she taught in Hartford, Connecticut, as an exchange teacher. I was thrilled and very proud to start my teaching career in Berkeley, and a bit sad to see it close, says Miss Bartlett. She has taught freehand drawing, costume dssign, commercial art, advanced creative art, and art appreciation. During these past forty years Miss Bartlett has seen many changes take place on this campus. She recalls a time when an old barn, a water tower and several old houses stood near Milvia Street. The barn was used as a garage by former Berkeley High Principal L. S. Biedenbach reflects Miss Bartlett. Miss Bartlett has traveled extensively and has toured in Europe three times to photograph Medi- eval art and architecture. Upon retirement, she plans to give her collection of art slides to the school library. Miss Bartlett has always taught in bungalows at Berkeley High School, and has always enjoyed it because they are so much like an old country school. The informal art class provides an unusually close relationship with her many students. Always a popular teacher, Miss Bartlett hears from many former students. Teaching at Berkeley High has been rewarding, says Miss Bartlett. I have loved working with the students, and knowing that many of them have made careers of art has given me a great feeling of satisfaction and joy. Though retiring, Miss Bartlett has left her distinguished mark at Berkeley High School. She has left things a little better at Berkeley High and in so doing, has given a better world to the lives of Berkeley High students. We will remember Miss Bartlett for her dedication as an art teacher. Though the bungalows may be removed and long forgotten, the memory of Miss Bartlett will remain with us forever. Miss Bartlett, we shall miss you! Miss Nova Bartlett 3
