Our class has seen many changes in the three years we have been here — in the passing of new rules and regulations that will benefit future students and in the construction of new facilities to enhance the molding of future leaders. Our campus is one of the few academically free campuses in the nation. This has been achieved by our hard work through the years. The classes before us, our class, and the ones to come have and will continue to keep the free- dom which Berkeley High School students now enjoy. Signed :, 1 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Mr. Emery Curtice Upon examination of the records of the June graduation class, I am assured that the long- standing tradition of academic excellence at Berkeley High School will continue. During the 1966-1967 school year, Berkeley High School will be involved in a self-evaluation study and accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. This accreditation study, which is now sponsored by the W.A.S.C., was, until a few years ago, the responsibility of the Uni- versity of California. This study will involve all certificated and classified personnel as well as students and all of their related activities. It is interesting to note that Berkeley High School was the first accredited high school in the State of California and has served as a pace-setter ever since. One hundred thirty-nine students of the June, 1964, graduation class who attended the University of California, placed Berkeley High School in first place in terms of grades received in their freshman year. Berkeley High has been among the top three schools in California in that respect for the past twenty years. Berkeley High is also well known in other fields such as Drama, Business, Music, Industrial Arts, Physical Education, Art, Home Economics and the many Special Educational programs. A B.H.S. graduate of a few years ago recently said to me, With the faculty you have at Berke- ley High School a student can ' t miss getting a good education. He was a non-college prep student, earning an excellent salary. On behalf of the entire staff at Berkeley High, may you carry out the Berkeley High School tradition with dignity and pride. Your Principal, EMERY J. CURTICE 2 Miss Nova Bartlett If students would leave things a little better than they found them, this would be a better world. This is Miss Nova Bartfett ' s parting message to Berkeley High School students after teaching here for forty consecutive years. Miss Bartlett graduated from the California College of Arts and Craft in June, 1925, and started teaching in Berkeley that fall. She came to Berkeley High School one year later and she has taught art here consecutively except 1950-1951 when she taught in Hartford, Connecticut, as an exchange teacher. I was thrilled and very proud to start my teaching career in Berkeley, and a bit sad to see it close, says Miss Bartlett. She has taught freehand drawing, costume dssign, commercial art, advanced creative art, and art appreciation. During these past forty years Miss Bartlett has seen many changes take place on this campus. She recalls a time when an old barn, a water tower and several old houses stood near Milvia Street. The barn was used as a garage by former Berkeley High Principal L. S. Biedenbach reflects Miss Bartlett. Miss Bartlett has traveled extensively and has toured in Europe three times to photograph Medi- eval art and architecture. Upon retirement, she plans to give her collection of art slides to the school library. Miss Bartlett has always taught in bungalows at Berkeley High School, and has always enjoyed it because they are so much like an old country school. The informal art class provides an unusually close relationship with her many students. Always a popular teacher, Miss Bartlett hears from many former students. Teaching at Berkeley High has been rewarding, says Miss Bartlett. I have loved working with the students, and knowing that many of them have made careers of art has given me a great feeling of satisfaction and joy. Though retiring, Miss Bartlett has left her distinguished mark at Berkeley High School. She has left things a little better at Berkeley High and in so doing, has given a better world to the lives of Berkeley High students. We will remember Miss Bartlett for her dedication as an art teacher. Though the bungalows may be removed and long forgotten, the memory of Miss Bartlett will remain with us forever. Miss Bartlett, we shall miss you! Miss Nova Bartlett 3 Those of you who have had Mr. Ehlers as a public speaking teacher will probably agree that Mr. Ehlers is one of the most interesting teachers at Berkeley High School. Much will probably be said of his fine accomplishments long after he ends his term of teaching here. Mr. Ehlers is a graduate of Berkeley High School and the University of California at Berkeley, where he directed the little theater. After leaving the University of California, he was a professional actor for ten years in California, two years in Australia, and one year in Texas. After his acting career, he went into radio broadcasting, and for many years, he was chief announcer for NBC. He was a free- lance radio and TV artist specializing in all dialects, and wrote pageants for Oakland, A lameda, Albany, and Berkeley. He also taught English classes for foreign-born students. Mr. Ehlers is one man whom no one will ever forget. He has devoted much of his time and energy to the students of B.H.S. radio program on KRE called Berkeley Highlights and has continued directing speech contests and graduation speeches for some thirty-four graduation programs. He has been the sponsor of the Speakers ' Bureau, and has done much to develop the speech abilities of his students. Mr. Ehlers has always placed the students before himself and has devoted much of himself to send them on a promising road to the future. This year marks the end of a most successful and rewarding career for Mr. Richard Ehlers. Mr. Ehlers, we who have been your students will carry lasting impressions of true and fine character. We are grateful for skills you have developed in us. We are sure you will enjoy your various interests in the days ahead. We will miss you. 4 Mrs. Phyllis Walker Mrs. Phyllis Walker began her years of teach- ing at Berkeley High School in the Fall of 1945. Previous to that time she had taught at Carmel Junior and Senior High School and at Redlands High School. During her career in Berkeley she accepted two exchange teacher appointments, the first at Victoria, Australia, 1 955 to 1 956, and the second at Summit, New Jersey, 1 957 to 1 958. At the conclusion of her teaching career at Berkeley High School, Phyllis Walker neither needs nor desires accolades. She has done her work exceedingly well. Much of her own intellec- tual curiosity and objectivity of attitude has been transmitted to her students. Certainly many of them have felt and understood her kind and sym- pathetic approach. Now Mrs. Walker closes behind her one door, that of the world of Berkeley High School; but another door opens into a larger and less re- stricted world; a world of travel, inquiry, and freedom. As her friends, colleagues, and stu- dents, we wish her great satisfaction and pleasure in her further exploration of her world. Mrs. Edna Lawson Mrs. Edna Lawson has been teaching drawing and crafts at Berkeley High School since 1947. She attended Alameda High School and gradu- ated from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1926, and came into the Berkeley school system that fall as an assistant to the elementary art supervisor, Miss Zinnie Kidder. Mrs. Lawson is a superb craftsman and her high standards are reflected in the work of her students. Mrs. Lawson has loved teaching and it will be hard to replace her. One of he r chief interests is gardening, a hobby which she shares with her many friends. Future plans include courses in Botany, Music Appreciation, and travel, and we wish her good luck and God speed. 5 ■ Hugh Spitzer ASBHS President This semester, student government has assumed an increasing vital role in the educational progress of Berkeley High. Students are gradually learning that the Associated Students is a useless organization un- less it acts directly to improve conditions in the school for all students. The Associated Students have attempted to involve more people in student government, because the strength of any democracy lies in the participation of its members. More students than ever before have joined ASBHS sponsored clubs, committees, and ath- letic groups. The Associated Students have worked to interest students in the vital issues that affect us all. The fight for progressive student government has been a long and hard one, but we are now assured that the ASBHS will be an organization that exists to protect the welfare of the students. The quality of students in the coming classes shows great promise for active student government, and I dedicate this message to those students, and wish them the best of luck. —HUGH SPITZER Lenny Frenza Vice-President Mr. Wilson Sponsor Board of Control BOARD OF CONTROL Karen Lou Secretary Frazer Perkins T reasurer Faye Butler H- 1 2 President Leslie Lee G.A. The Sex Education Committee distributed its important report on the need of family life courses in the Berkeley schools. The success of this committee has shown that it is possible for students to have effe ct upon curriculum planning. The C urriculum Committee has examined the broad range of course structure and con- tent, and has made constructive criticism in this area. The Assembly Committee, working with the Faculty Assembly Committee, has worked to make assemblies thought-stimulating as well as entertaining. The Publicity Committee has worked to strengthen school pride and acquaint students with the numbers of activities and events go- ing on at Berkeley High. It has brought to- gether students of different backgrounds to work for the welfare of our school. Assembly GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION Leslie Yee President Ericia Meyers Vice-President This has been a semester of change for the Girls ' Association. In the past, there has always been a problem concerning the lack of communi- cation and enthusiasm among the elected home- room representatives. In efforts to solve this problem, the G.A. decided to open the council to any interested girls who turned in petitions for membership. The council diminished to thirty- eight members, but has come to function smooth- ly and with a greater amount of enthusiasm. Our goal has been to act as a service organiza- tion: to provide the student body with at least one successful social activity and to combine the proceeds thereof with those from two bake sales and our concession to give a scholarship to a senior girl. Due to the support and co-operation of Mrs. Ulry and the student body, my adminis- tration has worked hard to reach our goal. Karen Hopson Secretary Adele Hunter T reasurer Deborah Stephens Social Secretary RALLY COMMITTEE Dave Birch Co-Chairman Jon Korchin Co-Chairman The effectiveness of a service organization is measured in terms of the willingness of its members to assist the school. That is why we feel this semester ' s Rally Committee has been one of the best ever here at Berkeley High. The Tournament of Champions was an excit- ing end to an outstanding basketball season; we as Rally Committee members were proud in backing the team and representing our school. The quality of the Rally Committee is a quality which complements the greatness of both Berkeley High and its student body. From the money we raised this semester, we hope to give a scholarship to a deserving member of the senior class. This semester ' s unique Co-Chairmanship has given both of us the privilege and honor of serving the Rally Committee. We thank Mr. Wilson for his devoted guidance, all members for their fine efforts, and the school for allowing us to serve in such a fine organ- ization. Senior Friends This semester the Senior Friends had fewer members than in previous years because there was no mid-term class. Despite the small membership, the group was closely knit and very much alive. All the girls worked together with enthusiasm and spirit. Living up to our motto to serve , we assisted the school in many ways. We helped in various school offices, acquainted girls new to Berkeley High with the campus, and ushered at several school programs. We worked with the G.A. in raising a scholarship by par- ticipating in its bake-sales and talent show. We held several functions throughout the semester, among which were a pot luck dinner, an Easter outing, and the traditional farewell dinner. My special thanks go to Mrs. Ulry for her aid and guidance, to my co-chairmen, Chris Gock and Fay Shon, and to the girls them- selves who contributed so much of their time and energy to make the Senior Friends a great success. SENIOR FRIENDS Nancy Babington Chairman HONOR SOCIETY WHAT IS HONOR SOCIETY? It is the springs that spring in the spring. It is the leaves that fall in the fall. It is love. It is passion. It is indigestion. It is the young heart infused with the warm wistful wisdom of the whispy whiskered whimpet. Our ambitions, dreams and creative ideas, formu- lated over the last three years are no longer fantasies of the mind, but are taking the form of reality — a reality in which we as individuals intend to live. We are embarking into a world waiting to challenge us and our ideas, to challenge us to survive, challenge us to live. These last three years of coexistence with our teachers, different types of people, and bizarre situations of BHS have prepared us for this challenge. The June class of 1966 will meet this challenge to live, with great determination. We as a class would like to thank Mr. Curtice, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Wilson, our sponsors, and every teacher at BHS for making our three years memorable ones. —FAYE BUTLER Linda Mapanao Treasurer Nancy Singer Social Secretary 20 H- 1 2 Class Council IN MEMORIUM PAMELA PORTER Pamela Porter (1947-1966) Never ask for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. . — John Donne Miss Pamela Porter, a good Berkeley High School student, would have received her high school diploma this June. In spite of a long and continuous struggle against leukemia, Pamela nevertheless made the graduation list, completing all the subjects needed for graduation. Though stricken with leukemia, Pamela endured the suffering with courage. She kept to her studies, though health limited her potential working capacity. A home teacher assisted her in exploring the many glittering facets of life. Her tutored subjects included English, history, earth and life sciences, and arts and crafts. She had planned to be a Social Studies major. Pamela can be considered a humanitarian because she has willingly contributed time and effort for the Humane Society. She was able to get along well with people, especially when actively working in their behalf. Pamela had a lot of friends, says her home teacher, who, as a friend, knew Pamela well. Pamela was an industrious worker. Before her illness, she worked wholeheartedly as an Avon representative in order to earn extra spending money. Pamela now has left us, but many students will remember her brief, but meaningful, stay at Berkeley High School. Her departure is a sad event in many lives, but we can all feel secure in knowing that her long affliction has ended peacefully, without further pain or suffering. SELL Have you ever wondered who the man in the yellow helmet is? You ' ve probably seen him fre- quently, busily running about on campus, either with a ruler in one hand, or a roll of blue prints under his arm. This man is obviously not one of the faculty, nor is he on the maintenance staff. By now, you ' ve probably guessed that he is a member of the construction group. His name is Mr. Arthur L. Sell, Construction Inspector, at Berkeley High School. He is the man responsible for every move made in the construction of the new buildings and the reconstruction on the old ones. Mr. Sell has been working on the BHS campus for approximately two years, and in actuality, he has become a part of BHS. He has a pleasant and unique personality. He is eager to meet as well as talk to students on this campus, because he is the type of man who wants to know about things going on around him. Often he takes time to talk to some of the students who are interested in the construction project. His interest extends into many areas. This wide range of interest may be due to the fact that originally, he started out as a pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin and has developed into a successful construction inspector, presently functioning in that position at Berkeley High. Mr. Sell has had much experience in contract work as well as architectural construction. He has been a project engineer, and a general contractor for General Motors Assembly Plant, in Fremont. He has had architectural experience with Angus McSweeney, Hardison Komatsu, and Corlett and Spackmann. It is now June 1966, and already two of the four planned phases of reconstruction on the Berke- ley High School campus have been completed; the third phase will be completed by June 30, and the fourth will be soon be on its way. The $3,000,000 was appropriated by the school bond passed in the 1962 election. These four phases have been supervised by Mr. Arthur L. Sell. The first phase, completed in October 1964, was the remodeling of the Gymnasium and Science buildings. Both gyms were given new lockers, better lighting, and improved heating systems; the Science building was remodeled to make the existing facilities more readily available.. In November 1965, the construction of the new Academic-Administration building and cafe- teria was completed. Construction on the cafeteria was completed just before the rainy season came so that the students were fortunate enough to eat in a dry area, under the raised, circular cafeteria. The contractors for these buildings were F. P. Lathrop Co. and the designing was done by two architects, Corlett and Spackmann. Moving from the old Academic-Administration building into the new buildings made it possible for the third phase to be started. Under contractors Lincoln Haskell, Mr. Sell supervised the de- velopment of all of the construction plans to remodel the old Academic-Administration building. This phase will be completed by June 30, and will lend more space for classrooms so that the bungalows can be removed. The fourth building phase is scheduled to be completed by fall 1966; involving the removal of the bungalows, landscaping, and paving north of Bancroft. A 30-car parking lot will be paved where the Milvia bungalows presently stand. Mr. Sell ' s job requires alertness as well as a great deal of technical knowledge — which he has. Some students at BHS may remember him as the man in the yellow helmet, but those persons who have worked closely with him have come to appreciate the integrity and fine character of this man, who is doing a highly superior job in a truly admirable way. We wish in this way to recognize the fine qualities of a man and to say, Thank you, Mr. Sell. 52 AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE This semester Berkeley High has been very fortunate in having three AFS students. Dino Vicenzotti, from Padua, Italy, joined Shan Loughrey of Melbourne, Australia, and Andy Kyeyune of Kampala, Uganda. At the present time a Berkeley High student, Carl von Rohr, is on an AFS scholarship in the Netherlands. The AFS Club has been very active this semester. Besides several excel- lent speakers, we have had many outside activities. Our big effort of the semester, Showtime AFS, was a success, and at least one bake saie is planned to raise money for AFS scholarships. A picnic and a pot luck supper are also included on the agenda. I would like to extend the club ' s best wishes to Tess Logan and David Leibwitz, Berkeley High ' s two Americans Abroad finalists and to thank each and every member of the club for his support. A special thanks goes to my hardworking officers, Sherry, Tess, and Meg, and to our devoted sponsor, Mrs. Keppel, who has given so much of her time to make club functions a success. LYNN ROBINSON A.F.S. President SHERRY HAASARUD AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE ANDY KYEYUNE A.F.S. Student from Uganda I owe my gratitude to the AFS Program as a whole, the Berkeley High faculty and students, the School Board, and everyone else for making my year a success. This is an uncomparable opportunity, especially for students like me who come from growing countries. Your help is not only a way to promote international friendship, but it also gives students from growing countries a chance to prepare for their country ' s future responsibilities. We learn all this during our stay here. I will never forget my experience in this country. I have learned many things, including a broading scope of the advantages of democracy. Alto- gether, I will return to Uganda with increased knowledge about this society in which everyone has a chance to succeed. —ANDREW KYEYUNE A.F.S. Student from Uganda Berkeley — a dot on the map to which a strange girl was to come in the later months of 1965. But what a dot it turned out to be! A truly wonderful family to meet her and take her to her new home; a group of warm friends to include her in their activities; and a whopping big school for her to attend which was full of interest and excitement. Her home was a place of warmth and love; her family, the best she could ever have hoped for. Seeing the sights of beautiful California took up most of her holiday time. Meeting new faces was a constant pleasure, as everyone was so warm and friendly. Attending Berkeley High was a real exciting experience for her; 3500 students was a fantastic number compared to her small, private girls ' school in Melbourne. However, with the help of her wonderful classmates she soon became accustomed to her new school. Warm faces were everywhere to wel- come and help her. Her studies were a constant challenge and a source of interest. This year has passed all too quickly and soon she will have to return home, but the memories of her stay will not fade — they will live on. This foreign girl will always remember that America was indeed a land of warmth and opportunity. Her gratitude can best be expressed by — thank you, Thank —SHAN LOUGHERY A.F.S. Student from Australia I am an exchange student from Padua, Italy. Padua is situated twenty miles north of Venice. My first semester in the United States was spent in Crockett, a small town near Vallejo. The differences between Crockett and Berkeley are great, but I am glad that I had the opportunity to experience both. Berkeley is a very active city. People are always doing things and going places. The people are also very friendly. The people in the United States have a different way of thinking. I have learned to see things with perspective. To look at the outside, as well as to penetrate under the superficial skin is part of this perspective. I have experienced many of the joys and disappointments of an Ameri- can student; this include s school, sports, and household duties like doing the dishes. I know that I am very fortunate, and I wish that everyone could experience this. I will be a proud graduate of Berkeley High, and I would like to thank everyone who has made my stay here a happy and memorable one. — DINO VICENZOTTI A.F. S. Student from Italy You, THANK YOU. The Daily Jacket staff has worked industriously and with unbounded enthusiasm all semester long to achieve the ever difficult goal of a factual and accurate newspaper which is both informative and trustworthy. We have strived to publish a newspaper in the best traditions of professionally responsible journalism as permitted in a democratically oriented society. The task of publishing the Jacket daily has been no easy one. The pressures and tensions created from meeting a deadline are tremendous and involves personal sacrifices from each staff member. Fortunately, every staff member has worked as a closely knit unit and has made invaluable contributions. Each has shown sincerity and dedication in putting out the daily and, as a result, each has gained valuable ex- perience in journalism. We of the Daily Jacket staff are proud to be one of the few high school dailies in the United States. With a fine advertising staff, we have also managed to be self-sufficient. I personally wish to thank each and every staff member for a valiant effort in the noble cause of public enlightment. A special note of thanks goes to Mr. Wright, whose timely assistance during the crises of publica- tion kept us all from becoming totally disorganized and disoriented. MR. With only one returning letterman from last year ' s squad, Coach Spike” Hensley used the pre-season games to mold his varsity team. By the time the league season rolled around, the Jackets were in high gear. Taking the first round with a 6-2 record, and winning the bid to the TOC with a 71-63 decision over the second round winner, El Cerrito, the Jackets showed that they were the best in the ACAL. Even with the one point loss to Arroyo, and the loss to Lincoln; to Berkeley High, this team was the best ever. VARSITY GYMNASTICS Early season prospects for another successful gymnastic season appeared bright. Seven lettermen returned to bolster Berkeley ' s chances of once again reigning as Northern California Champions. They were Maurice Williams (team captain), Kirk Edwards, Ray Hamilton, Phil Chachere, Bill Hanford, Bill Jamerson, and Charles Williams. The team continued its habit of winning by easily capturing the first six meets. Success up to this point was attributable to the all-around excellence of sophomore Kirk Edwards. With Maurice Williams and the improvement of several sopho- more and freshmen gymnasts the outlook for an undefeated season appeared more promising. Only two opponents would provide a real test during the remainder of the season in the Jackets ' drive for the championship, Encina of Sacramento and Homestead of Sunnyvale. VARSITY TRACK COACH ROCKER Possessing outstanding ability in some events but lacking over-all balance, the Jackets of Berkeley High enjoyed a most successful season, winning a large majority of their meets in league competition. Among these were Tony Newsom and Levord Jenkins, two seniors who proved themselves the finest one-two punch seen in the hurdles in the ACAL in many seasons. In the sprints, Ray Allen, Julius Baker, and Randy Harris carried most of the load. Senior Randy Boquist was consistently strong in the 440, while Charles Johnson delivered well in the 880. Distance stars Jon Heinstein (mile) and Ralph Gamez (two-mile) continued their two-year domination of the league in their specialties. Both he and Gamez received national recognition in their events while at Berkeley High. Other distance men who scored well were Ken Wilkins (880) and Norman Freitag (two-mile). In the field events, Wesley Franklin (broad jump); Turo Nurmikko (pole vault); Jerry Samuels and Jim Angel (wt. events); and Len Scarbrough (high jump) carried the Jacket load. 80 BACK ROW, left to right: David Brownscombe, Fred Marris, Jason Magid, Forrest Williams, Ray Allen, Earl Thomas, SECOND ROW: Grover Blackwell, Ray Mitchell, Cliff Franklin, Steve Patmont, Stan Edwards, Mike Lee, Mark Davis Brian Blair, Darrington Samson, Ken James, Robert Woods, Tilton Blair, Richard Magid, Charles Lee. Leading the way for the outstanding performance in the North Coast show- ing was Phil Alexander, who won first place in the 123 pound division, and Bill Harris and Don Walker, who finished third in their respective divisions. All three won their weight classes in the A.C.A.L. finals and Walker was voted the league ' s most outstanding wrestler. Others to place in the A.C.A.L. were Moto Nishimura, first; Davis Gee and Ted Brown, second; and Ramsey Mashey, third. SOPHOMORES MIKE HUFFMAN Vice President JOY NEWCOM T r easurer LAWRENCE HILL Social Secretary Berkeley High is truly a great school, not only in terms of the tre- mendous opportunities available to students outside the classroom. We should all be thankful for the chance to go to school here. I am very grateful for having been given the opportunity to serve as class president this semester. It has been a very rewarding experience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Rone, Mr. Wilson, my fellow officers, members of the class council, and all the others who helped to make this semester a success.
