Berkeley High School, Spring, 1964, Berkeley, California x ' p9k L. 1 ' - 1, ' - J f Tt l ■r ¥ i Vl DEDICATIONS 2 CARL HERBERT WENNERBERG Superintendet of Schools It is highly appropriate that Superintendent, Carl Herbert Wennerberg, should be one of those to whom this issue of Olla Podrida is dedicated. As Superintendent he has brought to this district a rich background, with a career that has taken him through class- room teaching at the elemntary, secondary, and college level, as well as through service as school principal and superintendent prior to his work in Berkeley. Under his leadership, the Berkeley School District has pioneered in the classroom and in school-community cooperation. His broad vision has encouraged experimental programs in science, mathematics, and reading; written educational and personal policies; new dimensions in school-city planning; intensive in-service training in child study, inter-group education, and inter-personal relations. He has given encouragement and support to the continuing study of de facto segregation and its problems. His positive action has pro- moted many projects and school-community activities to reduce misunderstandings and issues which have faced the cosmopolitan city of Berkeley. We are also pleased that, as a result of his leadership, we are currently engaged in a tremendous construction program to meet some of the more urgent needs of Berkeley High School and other schools in the district. In addition to continuing to act as a Trustee of Redlands University, Mr. Wennerberg was chosen, among several hundred superintendents throughout the nation, to attend the Harvard Conference on Urgent Problems of Public School Administration Today and Tomorrow. He was also chosen from among hundreds of school administrators to meet in Los Angeles to discuss problems of urban youth with the personal representative of the President. In the fall of 1963, he was one of seventy selected from more than 500 school administrators, and spent six weeks in Sweden as a guest of the Meet Modern Sweden Committee and of the Swedish Government. On March 15, 1964, Mr. Wennerberg was presented the California Sun-Reporter ' s 1963 Citizens of Merit award, in recognition of his continued interest and enthusiasm for the development of the democratic concept of equal opportunity in the field of public education. He joined a distinguished group of previous merit award winners, among whom were Governor Edmund G. Brown, Congressman A. Philip Burton, and Joseph Eichler. As Mr. Wennerberg leaves this district, in order that he may complete work for his Ph.D. at the University of California, we wish him every success and ask that he take with him our gratitude for the manner in which he has exemplified the democratic philosophy and spirit in his conduct of school affairs. 3 MR. A. B. CAMPBELL Assistant Superintendent of Schools On June 30, 1964, after thirty-three years of successful and devoted service, Mr. A. B. Campbell retires as Assistant Superintendent of the Berkeley Public Schools. Mr. Campbell, a native Californian, born and raised at Campbell, California, a town named after his pioneer grandfather, was graduated from Campbell High School and then attended San Jose State College, where he was enrolled in the teacher training program. In the Fall of 1918 he was in the Army Training Program at Stanford University. After the war he moved to Lahaina Maui, Hawaii, where he was instructor for a year in a school for boys. In 1920 he left teaching and worked in the engineering department of a milling company. In 1921 Mr. Campbell returned to Berkeley, enrolled at the University of California, and received his B.S. Degree in 1923. Upon graduation he returned to Hawaii, where for one year he was Assistant Agriculturist at the Ewa Plantation, Ewa, Hawaii. He then returned to school work and was Director of Rural Training at the University of Hawaii. After three years he became Principal of a grammer school in Wahiawa, Hawaii, and then Principal of a junior high school in Hilo. In 1929 Mr. Campbell returned to California, became an investment counselor for a firm in San Francisco for two years, and at the same time was enrolled in the graduate school at the University of California. In the Spring of 1931, he entered the Berkeley School System as an elementary teacher. In the Fall of the same year he was appointed Associate Principal of the Uni- versity Elementary School. From 1932, until 1938, he was Director of Adult Education and supervised three evening schools besides being Principal of the McKinley Continu- ation School. In 1933 he received his M. A. degree from the University of California. Mr. Campbell was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools in 1938, a position he held until he was granted a leave of absence to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. There he achieved the permanent rank of Commander. Mr. Campbell ' s responsibilities as Assistant Superintendent have been many and varied. He has served as acting Superintendent, interviewed all applicants for teaching positions and recommended to the Board of Education for employment those deemed qualified, assigned teachers to various schools, served as counselor to teachers on educational and personal problems, served as staff consultant to principals, directors, and supervisors on educational, administrative and personnel problems, helped in the preparation of the budget, served on building-planning committee and in any capacity directed or assigned by the Superintendent. These responsibilities he accepted and discharged with friendly efficiency. During these years he has won the respect and affection of hundreds of school employees and parents. Mr. Campbell has also been very active in community affairs during his thirty-three years in Berkeley. A few are: Member of the Henry Morse Stevens Lodge 541 F. A. M.; Past President of the Berkeley Kiwanis Club; Board member of the Family Service of Berkeley, and member of the Bay Area Council on Social Planning. For many years he was in charge of collections during United Crusade campaigns for all Berkeley public and private schools. He is a member of Northbrae Community Church and its Board of Control, a member of American Legion Post 7, and a member of Phi Delta Kappa National Education Fraternity. He has also been a member of and has served on many committees of local, state and national educational organizations. Mr. Campbell lives in Berkeley, with his wife, Esther, and two sons, David and Ben. His hobbies include fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, music and photography. Now he is retiring from service with the school district. He can be said to be directly responsible for the high caliber of teachers in the district ' s schools. We wish to express deep appreciation and gratitude for the fine and sincere contributions he has made and the fine personal qualities Mr. Campbell has brought to his position, and for the superior contributions he has made. DR. GEORGE C. McGINNIS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS As teacher, counselor, principal, and assistant superintendent of schools, George C. McGinnis has served Berkeley ' s schools with great distinction since 1938. Dr. McGinnis received his B.S. in 1931 in Civil and Mining Engineering, and his Master ' s Degree in 1938. In 1956 he was awarded a Doctorate in Education with a dissertation on Contractual Procedures of School Districts. He returned from Modesto to his Alma Mater, Berkeley High School, in 1938 as a science teacher and counselor. In 1943, he went to Jefferson Elementary School as Principal for a year and then served the following year in the central office as Coordinator of Educational Services. From 1945 to 1948 he held the principalship at Thousand Oaks School. He has since then been Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Charge of Business Services and Classified Personnel. An inspiring teacher, he was co-author with Berkeley colleague John L. Horning, of An Open Door to Chemistry, one of the first science books written for children and published in 1946. Greatly respected within his profession, he has served both as Bay Section and Statewide President of the California Association of School Business Officials. But all is not school business with George McGinnis. He is an enthusiastic Bohemian Clubber and a trombonist in that organization ' s orchestra. Married for 35 years, he takes great pride in his family which includes an engineer son and a daughter who is a teacher. We salute a distinguished graduate of the Class of 1926, Dr. George C. McGinnis, and appreciate his fine service. MR MRS. ESMER CLARK DIRECTOR OF SECONDARY EDUCATION A career spanning 37 years in the public schools of the Bay Area will end this July for Mrs. Esmer Clark, Director of Secondary Education for the Berkeley Unified School District. Mrs. Clark started her teaching career in I 927, at Whittier Elementary School, but moved to Hillside the next year where she remained through I 938. After a year ' s leave of absence for graduate study, she returned to Berkeley, but this time as a teacher of English and remedial reading at Burbank Jnior High. As the years passed, her reputation grew as a specialist in the field of reading, so in 1952, after another leave of absence for work in the Oakland schools, she returned to Berkeley High School, again teaching all phases of English but specializing in remedial reading. In 1959, as a fitting climax to her career of service, Mrs. Clark was appointed by Mr. Wenner- berg as Consultant in Reading and Coordinator of Secondary Education for Berkeley Schools, a position which grew into her present role of Director of Secondary Education. Retirement for her will not mean idleness. She has already authored several books on the junior high level and will continue to write. She will serve as an educational consultant. But, most of all, she wants to do a lot of cooking. Esmer ' s former students and her associates will miss her. MR. DONALD CARR SCIENCE Each person contributes to his environment in his own way. Mr. Donald Carr contributed his dynamic personality, wide range of interests and outstanding teaching ability to Berkeley High School. Mr. Carr was a teacher in Berkeley High School for twenty-three years. The high- est praise is that he taught well and that he has contributed to the progress of many students. The scholastic achievements of his former students has helped to make the proud academic record of our school. His students will recall his early morning sessions, his thoroughness and his zest for life. To you, Mr. Carr, the best wishes for a long, full and enjoyable retirement. At long last the spotlight shines on Mrs. Florence Schwimley as she takes a much deserved curtain call at Berkeley High. It refuses to dim at the tremendous ovation that is being given her for more than twenty-five years of inspirational direction and instruction in things of the theatre that are so much of the rich experience that has been her generous life. Berkeley High School productions in drama and music have always been so outstanding under her aegis here that they are continually termed ' professional ' by the community she has served so successfully and well. For several generations Mrs. Schwimley has meant DRAMA with every letter of this significant word spelled in glowing neon capitals on the marquee of Berkeley theatre! There has never been a show produced hereabouts that hasn ' t sparkled in scintilating fashion because of the good, old-fashioned ' hard work ' she has put into every small detail that makes a Berkeley High School show not just ' another high school presentation ' . She loves the theatre. She lives the theatre. And she has the knack of recognizing student talent and making it appreciated. Long is the list of Berkeley High School graduates who have found bright careers on stage and screen because Mrs. Schwimley saw in the the spark that makes a star! She has presented the wizardry of ' good theatre ' for the last time this semester as a member of your faculty! Her magic touch, like that of Prospero in Shakespeare ' s The Tempest will no more be yours for the asking. In that gentleman ' s words to Ariel, the elfin spirit of all things good in life, let us say in true humility: Fare thou well! To Mrs. Phyllis Svane, teacher of English, we offer this dedication as a token of our appre- ciation for her many years of devoted service to Berkeley High and to the Berkeley school system. After previous service at Edison and at Willard, Mrs. Svane became a permanent teacher at Berkeley High School in 1939. Her service has been characterized by sincere interest in the personal and the educational welfare of her students. Mrs. Svane is the kind of teacher who cannot be replaced. PRINCIPAL ' S MESSAGE MR. EMERY J. CURTICE PRINCIPAL The next two and one-half years are going to be quite hectic at Berkeley High School. The patience of students and faculty will be subjected to the ultimate in terms of interruptions, noise and confusion in generaJ. An extensive building and remodeling program will be under- taken, beginning June 15, 1964. By September of 1964, the boys ' and girls ' locker rooms will be completely remodeled and other minor changes and additions will be completed, ready for the opening of the fall term. The new cafeteria and the new building which will house the Accountant ' s Office, Home Economics, M.R., and English classrooms, Counseling, Administration and Attendance are sched- uled to be completed by September of 1965. The present Academic Building will be completely remodeled and ready for occupancy by September of 1966. At this time, the bungalows will be removed and the campus will be land- scaped. Please come back and see us when the building program is completed and see Berkeley High School in its remodeled state. Your Principal Emery J. Curtice EDITOR’S MESSAGE CLAUDIA NELSON POD EDITOR We have come to a symbolic junction or crossroads in our life where we must choose a direction — a pathway leading to our intellectual and spiritual goals. The great have walked the pathways before us. They have not chosen the familiar, well-trodden routes, but have struck out Into uncharted, tangled areas to reach a climate of unfettered ideas To believe that our chances are less, to lament upon the unrest and unsolved problems of our time is sheer impertinence. The selfsame source of light has penetrated the consciousness of the great and near-great through the ages. It is ours for the earning! We must accept the challenge AND the LABOR to help man- kind in his quest for beauty and truth — albeit, at times, we feel — to judge by the screaming headlines — that man has forgottten the nature of his quest. We must remember, too, that each path has a mind at its source! Among us may be one to forge a solution to some of man ' s eternal problems. Some of us may choose the contemplative life of the researcher or scholar ... a pathway through the quiet, endless forest Mandkind has always appreciated the majesty and mystery of the trees The poet Holmes has said: In fact, there’s nothing keeps its youth So far as I know but a tree and truth . . . However, we must realize that trees thrive on closeness. A person cannot be so isolated that his fate will have no effect on the welfare of many. Others of us may choose to brace ourselves for the steamy jungles of politics and human welfare; while still others may try for the steep, rocky, barren, and lonely routes of science. Whatever the choice, we must believe in the sanctity and excellence of life and remember from Troilus and Cressida: The end crowns all ; And that old common arbitrator, Time, Will one day end it. There are two things that makes our Chorale distinctive. First, though the Concert Chorale is made up of 69 members, it works as one. Second, the Choraler ' s have a certain kind of spirit, an esprit de corps, that is apparent in our performances. Under the fine direction of Mr. Robert Pearson, the Concert Chorale has covered a large variety of challenging music. I would like to thank this year ' s officers for their support: V. P. Ena Smith; Sec. Nina Wood; Robe Comm. Brian Fretter, Cam Corlett, and Scott Snowden. Roger Haseltine, President The Aeolian choir, under the very fine direction of Mrs. Hardester, has given many performances this semester, the highlight of which was the Spring Festival. Each of the seventy-five girls has worked diligently to render performances demonstrative of the choir ' s fine standards. I should like to thank Mrs. Hardester, along with my fellow officers for making this semester such a success. This semester, we supplied the music for South Pacific. Through after school sessions, we succeeded in playing the original score. Our rehersals are very casual and everyone has a chance to relax and enjoy what they ' re playing. It gives a student musician extra experience and enjoyment from his instrument. 27 CONCERT BAND DANCE BAND 28 The Berkeley High School Concert Band is basically a training organization made up of students striving to enter the symphonic band- The Concert Band is under the direction of Mr. Lutt and student teacher Mr. Werdesheim. At the beginning of this semester, the club was priviledged with the addition of a third AFS Foreign Exchange Student, Ashok Prakash of India, thus bringing our Exchange family to three. Our two other Exchange Students, Sue and Knut, have both taken an extremely active part in school affairs. Our Exchange Day, held on March 6th, was a rousing success. More than 25 Exchange Students, staying in different High Schools in the area, attended and were taken on a tour of BHS by members of our club. Our other projects, the Hootenanny and the Casual Day concession were also quite prosperous. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow officers, the faculty committee, and our sponsor Miss Bennett, for the invaluable assistance they have rendered during the course of the semester. Vice President KAREN BJORKLAND Secretary-Treasurer PEGGY BORT Secretary-Treasurer JOAN INTORF EXCHANGE STUDENTS’ MESSAGES This year has been fantastic. I will never forget the experiences I have had in Berkeley and in Berkeley High. Thanks to all of you for making this year the greatest in my life. KNUT BACHKE A.F.S. Student from Norway To all my friends — the ones I know well, the ones I met only a few times, the ones I haven ' t met but passed in the halls during the mad rush to get to class. A year passes so quickly. A year crammed full with ail the new, exciting, and memorable experiences of living in a new country and sharing in your daily life. It is a year I will never forget. All I can say is thank you — faculty and pupils alike of Berkeley High. You made my year here so wonderful. SUSAN MARKHAM A.F.S. Student from New Zealand I am honored to have visited the United States of America, as an exchange student member of American Field Service from India. It has been a laudable venture to come to California and graduate from this large educational institution as well as attend the University of California, after having been on the eastern coast of this country. Throughout my travels and stay in America I have received a warm welcome, the generosity of which has somewhat overwhelmed me. The people of my country have grown up in admiration of those who have made this country great, and we preserve the light of Democracy with a great potential in the Far East. I sincerely hope that my stay here shall strengthen those invisible links between our respective peoples, stronger even than physical links that bind countries together. ASHOK K. PRAKASH A.F.S. It was a very small team, de- pending mostly on hustle and shooting ability. Four boys, Danny Garcia, Claude Rosemond, Hozel Blanchard and Gary Petersmeyer, hit from the floor at over 40%, while Robert Smith hit over 50%. The club ' s offensive average was 68.8 and the defensive average was 56.8, for a 12 point spread. At mid-season we lost the services of George Sloan, who had done a tremendous job on the boards for us, and Billy Robin- son’s unfortunate illness further hampered our rebounding. We adjusted very well to this situation, but it took about two weeks, and a loss to DeAnza in the first game of the second round was fatal. The club made an excellent showing in winning its last seven games, and proved to one and all that it was a fine club. L. W. MIMS Varsity Coach We lost many outstanding track men from last years championship team through graduation. This year ' s team isn ' t expected to be as strong, but should be stronger in the distances running events. Out- standing men from last years B team who could give needed strength are: Ernest Boston, Vernon McCalla, Don Entenman, Mike Hollenbeck, Willie Johnson, Bob Strickland, Howard Hancock, Tom Castro, and Roland Davis. COACH HACKER “B” TRACK GYMNASTICS Bolstered by four of the top gymnasts in Northern California, this year ' s Gymnastic Team is favored to win their fourth consecutive Northern California Gymnastics Championship. Although lacking in quantity, the team has outstanding quality. One of this staters top high school gymnasts, Co-captain Paul Mayer culminates three years of varsity competition as defending champion in the all-around, side horse, parallel bars, free exercise and long horse events. He has never been defeated in high school competition in the long horse. Senior co- captain Tom Bruce, who would be the top gymnast on any other team, was often a close second to Mayer in many of the Olympic events. Tom was consistently the team ' s best performer on the still rings. Hard-working Bill Fujimoto pressed Mayer all year for first place on the side horse and occasionally gained valuable points in other events. Jules Bianchi began to iive up to his potential with outstanding performances on the parallel bars and horizontal bar, and scored occasionally in the long horse vault. The all-around performances of Bruce and Mayer over-shadowed the efforts of some fine sophomores and juniors who will be striving to perpetuate Berkeley High as Gymnastics Champions of Northern California. They work together as a team. They practice hard and many times ask for a harder workout. This is a young team with good I Oth and Nth graders. The seniors on this year ' s team are Chris Adamson, freestyle; Ren Brown, freestyle, butterfly; Bob Schweirs, freestyle, butterfly; Dan Kuhl , butterfly; Tom Lambert, freestyle, butter- fly; Mike Collins, freestyle; Steve Zarley, freestyle; Alan Terenishi, freestyle; Bob Ploss, back stroke; Bob Hester, backstroke; Bob Glaser, freestyle; Walter Piagentini, diving; Bob Gregg, breast. Phil Gums, not pictured. The Berkeley High School baseball team of 1964 is made up of seven varsify lettermen who should help fo improve on last year ' s ACAL record of 8-8. Seniors David Arthur and Junior Phil Gums are the backbone of a strong pitching staff with adequate help from Jeff Read and Dan Garcia. Gerald Bovich and Dwain Anderson hold down the keystone, while Dennis Frese returns for another fine year at First base. Letterman Gary Petersmeyer and senior footballer Stan Nakahara held down the catching position and have done a fine job. Roy Couch is back for another year in centerfield and his all-around play is the backbone of the defense. The squad is few in number, but determination and a desire to win more than make up for the lack of players. The bat of Greg Chrisman helped the team in many spots, while Chris Gunnell and Paul Cotton are important assets to our bench strength. Newcomer Ron Jackson looks like a potential bright light in the infield and at hat, but only time will tell. Jack Hanan rounds out the squad as a relief pitcher, and has looked good at times. The entire baseball program was moved to San Pablo this year, and despite the inconvenience experienced by all, the ' 64 season was a unique one for all involved. COLIN HASSE Block B President At this time, it looks as though the Block B will complete a very successful semester, as far as the treasury is concerned. Ice cream sales at home basketball game have provided more than the revenue anticipated. However, lack of partici- pation on the part of some members in such activities, as well as apparent lack of interest in the organization (beyond occasional requests for a dinner), lead me to believe that the Society will continue in its present inactive status for some time to come, unless some atempt at drastic reorganization and re- evaluation of purpose of the Sciety is made. I would like to thank our sponsors Mr. Allin and Mr. Davies, and Secretary-Treasurer Bob Michener for their efforts, both collective and individual, to save the Society from impending death. For the first time in many years, the GAA Basketball teams have become the proud owners of two trophies. This honor was due to the hard work of a wonderful coach, M iss Johnston. Furthermore, other competitive clubs ended their seasons just as successful. The GAA inaugurated many new ideas this semester: an intra school sports day, a successful concession and night basketball games at Live Oak. A great deal of time has been devoted to encourage new members to join the GAA clubs and to promote unity in the GAA. I want to thank everyone on the Council for their efforts, especially my officers, Sue, Mimi, Jean, Jan, and Mrs. Block, our illustrious sponsor. For such a large class, we have done very well both in class spirit and class unity. Both our concessions, the car wash, and our dance, the Soph Hop, were successes and will certainly help with our senior dues. These could never have taken place without the full cooperation of the H-IO ' s. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my official thanks to several people who worked the hardest to make this Spring semester a success. These people are Jim, Kathy, Pam, and Jackie, Mr. Okerstrom, the H-IO homeroom representatives, and Mrs. Small, head sponsor. It has been rewarding experience to be able to take part in the leadership of such a fine class and I hope that our next class president enjoys it as much as I have. I am sure that this class will go far in its remaining years at B.H.S. If every semester goes as well as this one has, we should win the Spirit Cup with ease. Once again, thank you for your support. As for this past semester we had a very successful beginning to our junior year, the junior prom held on April 17th was a real success, we did very well again with our concession and our treasury seems very well off, senior dues may be very small. Our class is really entering into and supporting Berkeley High events. We have a small class, but we have broken tradition of other mid-term classes by finishing well in the spirit cup race. I think next I want to thank my fellow class officers for a great job, (they did all the work). I also want to thank the home room representatives and our sponsor Mr. Copley for his all out job. Especially I want to thank you, the members of the L-l I class, for your help and support. Certainly all class officers can only do a good iob when, and if, they serve an enthusiastic class. It ' s been a great honor and a real pleasure to have been a member of the B.O.C. representing the L-l I class. Thank you for allowing me this privilege. Abuan, J. M. Adams, T. G. Agriesti, D. Our class was a small class when it entered high school and has become even smaller due to the fact that a number of students have accelerated their programs in order to graduate with the June class. Perhaps because we are a small class we have not generated as much spirit in the past as some of the larger classes. However, although it is early in the semester, I feel I can predict that there will be more spirit coming forth from the Low 12 class. Already I have been pleased with the number of students who have volunteered to help. These responses have come because the members of the class have felt the responsibility to support an elected vice-president who took over the vacant office of president. This support indicates class spirit. Plans are now underway for several projects. We hope to have a successful carwash and slope concession. and In behalf of the class I wish to thank Mr. Manske, class sponsors, officers, committee workers for their helpful assistance. It has been a pleasant and unexpected privilege to serve as your president. r sx Abitia, R. A. Andrews, G. E. Atkinson, R. B. Baggott, K. B. Bartlett, J. E. Baruch, D. A. Bergtold, F. H. Bianchi, J. BA 1 ' i ill SKVfffSr ’, 1 as® T SSr ml t i ' nEg K ihBHH if BOARD OF CONTROL ROB GOODIN ASBHS President The primary characteristic of this semesters B.O.C. has been the desire not to ignore the vital issues which confront our society in particular as they effect Berkeley High School, and the community of Berkeley. I hope we have established a policy of getting involved in the controversy which surrounds us. Along these lines this semester B.O.C. has attempted to deal with such issues as a severe challenge to academic freedom in the form of a conflict over the students rights to hear a controversial speaker speak on campus, and the issue of the initiative to repeal the Rumford Act. Berkeley High is a representative school; virtually every type of background, both racial, ethnic and socio-economic, can be found here. Because of this, we have the unique opportunity to see first hand, and deal with the issues which shape our future. An underlying feeling in the B.O.C. this semester, I think, has been that if we, the Board of Control, fail to face these issues, there is no purpose in student government. During this semester I have received very great support from many faculty members. During the many times when I was unsure as to which direction I should take or what goals I should aim for, I was given priceless advice by these people. The list is endless, however, some of the most influential have been: Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. FitzGibbon, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Langille, Mr. Ehlers, and of course, Mr. Curtice, and Mr. Wilson. Again, I would like to express my deep appreciation to these people without whom any semblence of an administration would have been impossible. Most of all, however, I would like to thank you, the students. This semester has given me an incomparable opportunity to broaden my horizons, and to appreciate Berkeley High and its unequaled diversity and greatness. I humbly thank you for the privilege of serving as your president. DAVE PALLEY Treasurer ROBERT SMITH Vice-President KATHY WITHERS Secreta ry MR. WILSON Sponsor NANCY FOOTE G.A. This spring is the first semester that Berkeley High has had no incoming L-10 ' s. Therefore the tradi- tional L- 1 0 Welcome was eliminated and we began the semester by planning the dance, Harlem Shuffle . We sold lolli-pops from April 6-10 for our concession, and our concession for Carnival Day was a Dunking Machine. Our meetings were held weekly on Tuesdays for a short part of each ' lunch period, plus extra committee meetings, held when needed. I ' d like to thank those G.A. reps, who were active in our activities, those students at B.H.S. who supported our con- cessions or dance, my officers who did more than was required of their offices, faculty members who helped us in our activities, and Mrs. Ulry who gave us advice — from her voice of experience — throughout the semester. We have the same motto Friendship and Service and the same number of girls (50) as in the past semesters. What is new every semester, how- ever, is the experience of working with the other girls to promote our goals. One gets out of an organization only what one puts into it. From the beginning of the semester we have had many opportunities to be of service. In March we had our concession of Senior Friend Lollipops. The money we made went into a scholarship fund. We supported the G.A. Dance and performed various services such as lobby duty and acquainting the new girls with the school. Thoese girls who suported all our activitie with enthusiasm and wore their beanies with pride rather than embar- dessment, found Senior Friends to be fun and worthwhile. I wish to thank all the girls for the time and effort they gave to make this semester a succesful one. Special thanks go to Mrs. Ulry and Miss Carlson for all the aid and advice they have given. WILSON Sponsor The Rally Committee is composed of high senior boys who have shown to the faculty and the students the traits of leader- ship and scholarship which have played a great part in the success they had at Berkeley High and is a true indication of the suc- cess they will attain after graduation. This semester ' s Rally Committee has been smaller than in past years, but the spirit and dedication exhibited by all the members have made their presence felt and appreciated by the whole school. This past semester, the Rally Committee in addition to maintaining order at basketball games, rallies, assemblies, and in the hall ways, has engaged in a vigorous financial drive which culminated in the traditional Rally Committee dinner. This past semester we have earned money in many ways: selling cokes at school dances and games, pushing our slope concession having a Casual Day Booth, and selling cokes and ice cream bars at the Cheerleader ' s Clinic. The success we have met and the profits we have made are due largely to the energetic work of several people under the guidance and supervision of our sponsor, Mr. Wilson. I would like to thank at this time, Mr. Wilson and the boys of the Rally Committee for giving me an opportunity to serve them in my capacity as chairman, and the rewarding experience of working with this swell bunch of fellows will long be cher- ished after the red and gold have faded from our hats. Each to go his separate way, yet each mindful of the memories he has gained at Berkeley High. . . . Best of Luck to a great 89 JACKET STAFF SALLYAN MEI Editor MR. President NAN HOPKINS H.S. Vice President What has been the most important factor in determ- ining the Honor Society ' s plans this year — that the Negro Revolution has finally come into Berkeley. The school has been caught up in the spirit of change. We are becoming interested in the controversies around us. It is the Honor Society ' s job this year to help wake the productive changes that are coming to our school; to direct this feeling of unrest by stimulating awareness of important issues. Towards this end, we are trying to bring the issues directly to Berkeley High. This means sponsoring, films, debates, and symposiums. This effort has placed us in the center of the ferment here, and I think that this is where we should be. C.S.F. I am happy I was able to help in planning debates, movies, and outings this semester. More than ever before, topics of current interest were presented and as a result, there was better participation. This is the purpose the C.S.F. should serve. We were also able to save enough money to give a scholarship. I want to thank Rich and Karen for their help and thank everyone for their interest. Sincerely 0 HUGO LETICHE WENDY YEE H.S. Sec-Treas. B J I £{ JOHN OAKLEY President H - 12 CLASS COUNCIL CLASS PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Although it seems so hard to believe, our three years at Berkeley High School are coming to a close. It is the training we have received during our stay at Berkeley High which has prepared us to fulfill our duties as citizens and future voters. It is the knowledge we have acquired at Berkeley High, both from our studies and our broadened scope of human experiences which has given us the capability to assume and perform our responsibilities as adults. Among the experiences which we as a class have had here at Berkeley High, we must include the highly successful Soph Hops of our first two semesters, the elab- orate Junior Proms of our second year, the continually profitable concessions we have had throughout our three years, and above all, the many various activities of our senior year. In our H-12 semester a heartening awakening of unified class spirit and support brought success to Ditch Day, our Slush Sales, the Senior Play, and finally, the Senior Ball. These experiences will form only a small portion of the experiences of our lifetimes, but they will always be among the foremost of the memories we shall share. I would like to thank my fellow officers, Knut, Virda, Kent, and Ellen, as well as all the Senior Committee members and their chairmen, for all the help they have given me, and all the work and effort they have given to our class. I would also like to thank Miss Wilson, our class sponsor, and Mr. Wilson, our class advisor, to both of whom I am deeply indebted for their freely given time and effort. In closing, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Spring Class of 1964, for affording me the honor and privilege of serving you as your president during our final semester. I deeply appreciate the enthusiastic support I have received from all of you, which has enabled me to guide our class to its most successful semester, a fitting culmination to our fruitful years at Berkeley High. Best wishes to each and every one of you for succes in your future lives, and may we meet again many times.
