' - |IF : ' 1 w ■ ill HI ;., ' % ' • i L ’ : K 72 11218 Dedication We dedicate this hook to two fine and loyal friends . . . Fifteen long years of friendship and service sum- marize the workaday life of Loreto (Larry) Di Rienzo, nurturing beauty in and among the flowers that are so much a part of our days at Berkeley High. A kind word for student and teacher alike, an infectious, rosy-cheeked grin for a fellow worker, a huge bunch of fragrant blossoms for any and every campus function — that ' s the Larry we know. A life of adventure in his familiar green car, daily contact with the world of music, a frequent vis- itor to flower shows — that ' s Mr. Di Rienzo, man about town. This is his last term with us as gardener. But as Larry put it: I ' ll be around! Arriverderci, old friend. We ' ll be seeing you! ' R Irs. Hazel Weller, teacher of ceramics and cre- ive art, has taught in the Berkeley schools since 928 and came to Berkeley High School in 1942. ie graduated from the California College of rts and Crafts in 1926. uring World War II, Mrs. Weller served in the rmy Air Force and was stationed in Mather Air eld, California, Arizona, Ohio, and North Caro- ia. asides being an inspirational teacher and an cceptionally fine artist, Mrs. Weller is dedi- ited to the welfare of others and in her quiet ay has helped many students with their prob- ms. She will be missed by her long term friends id associates. After retirement she will probably •ntinue her hobbies of travel, photography and tinting in far away places. Berkeley High can iunt on Mrs. Weller as our Ambassador of Good ' ' ill. i i : MR. CURTICE Principal Principal s Message After three very interesting years at Berkeley High School, I am impressed with its many features and accomplishments. Being the only High School in Berkeley, it provides an opportunity for the many racial and ethnic groups to learn to live together and, as a result, gain mutual experiences and understandings that will benefit them in their future lives. The most outstanding accomplishment of Berkeley High is its record of academic achievement — especially as it is measured by the University of California. Berkeley has won the Award of Merit seventeen out of a possible eighteen times. Our dramatics and music achievements have been too numerous to mention. Berkeley High ' s athletic teams have a record over the years that is unmatched in the Bay Area. One of Berkeley ' s proudest moments was at this year ' s T. 0. C. After losing the final game by one point in the last six seconds of overtime play, and failing to receive a well-earned award for their rooting section activities, fifteen hundred loyal supporters and our team accepted defeat and disappointment with a dignity that exmplified sportsmanship at its best. I personally consider it a rare privilege to be associated with Berkeley High School, its faculty and students. 2 Emery J . Curtice Editor’s Message . . .a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight. Rossiter Worthington Raymond All through our lives the horizons of each of us have been changing. The horizons we had a few years ago are now at hand and will soon be a part of our memories. As we go through life, these horizons broaden as we strive for new goals. Berkeley High has played an important part in helping us form these goals, for in the last three years we have gained knowledge and skill that have helped us determine what path to follow after graduation. The paths that this gradu- ating class will follow are of a great variety, but they all lead us closer to our own personal horizon. Many hours of work have gone into the preparation of this Pod. I would like to give my thanks to the staff for all their time, work, and cooperation, and to Miss Smith for her invaluable help and advice. It ' s been a pleasure working with this group to produce the Spring Pod of 1963. Editor Mary Jane Ross Pod Editor 3 Berkeley High says farewell to Larry Di Rienzo n . T ' 4 steve McCaffrey ASBHS PRESIDENT President s Message I believe much of the success that has been ours in the past semester is due to the general desire of the B.O.C. to do new things. This semester ' s accomplish- ments, however, certainly cannot be attributed to the B.O.C. alone. The faculty has been more than coopera- tive, and I would like to thank the following members in particular for their invaluable assistance: Mr. Cur- tice, Mr. Wilson, Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. Beutener, Mr. Haynes, Mr. Langille, Mr. Pearson, Mr. Lutt, and Mr. Okerstrom. These people whose task is thankless, yet to whom we are indebted for our success. I don ' t know how anyone could ask for a group with more original and contributive thought, and with more industry than this spring ' s B.O.C. My burden was lightened vastly by the willingness of every person to do his share, and I was delighted to find that many were always ready to do extra work. Through this semester, I have come to respect Berk- eley High and its many organizations. Above all else it has given me a greater appreciation of people. Thank you sincerely for the privilege and opportunity of serving you. ASBHS PRESIDENT STwz JOHN STRYKER VICE PRESIDENT MARY KAY WEBBER SECRETARY KATHI WALT TREASURER 6 HEAD CHEERLEADER JIM KENT G.A. ULRY SPONSOR FRIENDSHIP AND SERVICE The motto of the Senior Friends holds special meaning for those of us who have had the privilege of being Senior Friends. It means taking an active part in our high school during our last year. It means gaining new friends and being of service to our faculty. We began this semester helping counselors and greeting girls new to Berkeley High. Throughout the semester we have helped sell G.A. lollipops, worked in the lobby, and generally have been available whenever we were needed. The girls have worked well and I hope that they will regard their senior friend- ship service with pride when looking back on high school years. My gratitude goes to Mrs. Ulry for the advice she has given me during this semester. Also many thanks to my co-chairmen, Melisande Nichols and Pat Ruuska Best of luck to all of you in the future and thank you. President Honor Society Goethe once said, “Energy will do anything that can be done, a state- ment that truly describes the Honor Society this spring. One doesn ' t have to look far to see the results of our efforts and determination. Financial success has come from a slope concession, decal sales, hat- checking, and a Casual Day booth. The tutoring service and our bulle- tin board have proved their usefulness. Two outings were arranged, and hopefully the discussion series on the Peace Corps and other topics provoked student thought and interest. Bouquets go to my officers for the terrific job they did, to Martha and the CSF officers for their help, to our faithful sponsors for keeping us on the right track, and lastly, to all the members for rallying ' round when work was needed. This semester C.S.F. has again worked in co-operation with Honor Society, co-sponsorinq several debates and discussions as well as shar- ing a concession at the carnival. We have put up a new H.S., C.S.F. bulletin board in hopes that we might bring news of various cultural events to the attention of oi members and the rest of the school, as well as giving information about the services these organizations provide. This semseter I have planned to renew some former activities, such as the ' Coke Sale ' and the trip to the annual C.S.F. conference. However the latter depends on the amount of interest shown. California I.C. In addition to their pair and dance skating, both Laurie and Bill participated in single compe- tition starting in February 1952. Laurie was in Pacific Coast Juvenile Girls competition in 1956 and 1957; in 1958 she placed second in Novice Ladies in the Central Pacific area; in December 1960 she placed second in Junior Ladies in Central Pacific. Bill won the Pacific Coast Juvenile Men’s Championship in 1953; Pacific Coast Novice Men’s Championship in 1955; California State Junior Men’s Championship in 1956; Pacific Coast Junior Men’s Champion- ship in 1957; and the St. Moritz Ice Skating Club Senior Men’s Championship in 1960. Life begins and life ends much as a day begins with the first rays of light penetrating the morn- ing sky and ends with the sun setting in the West. As the sun floods the day with light, so Laurie Jean Hickox and her brother Bill brought love and happiness to their friends made through school associations, skating, the International Order of Rainbow for Girls, and the International Order of DeMolay. Both were extremely talented in the fields of skating, music, and dancing. Laurie was a member of this Spring graduating class, while Bill graduated from BHS in Janu- ary 1960, and then attended the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. The magnificent ice skating skills of this pair thrilled audiences everywhere. Their skating talent was so great that they took first place in the 1960 National Junior Pair Competition, and in 1961 they placed third in the National Senior Pairs and sixth in the North American Senior Pair Competitions. In January of 1961 they were named to the North American and World Figure Skating Teams. The Sunset came early in the lives of Laurie and Bill, on February 15, 1961, when the plane carrying the United States Figure Skating Team to the competition for World Championships at Prague, Czechoslovakia, crashed at Brussels, Belgium. Darkness surrounds us as the sun sinks in the West, but on the other side of the earth the sun is shining brightly. Death brings life as we know it to a close, but, like the sunset, it is not the end. On the other side of death, beyond the gates which separate the mortal from the the immortal, there is a new horizon. DAN LINDHEIM President Class Council MEL SIMBURG Vice President LYSLE SHAFFER Secretary BARRY BALAMUTH T reasurer TERRY CLARKE Social Secretary Class Presidents Message To the June Class of 1963 — Graduation is the most important moment of our young lives. It marks the end of the first stage of our education. Our twelve years in school have sought to give us a basic knowledge of the world around us and of the people who live in it. Now, whether we are headed directly out to work, to the service, to raising families, or continuing on to college we must see to it that each of us uses these years, not as an end, but only as a foundation for continued learning. Our world today is so great and complex that our education must never stop. We now say farewell to Berkeley High, to our memories both happy and sad. Let us hope that our paths meet again. Good luck and success to each and everyone. Service to our community in all fields of speech communication is the main objective of the Speakers ' Bureau, and this has been an active semester. Members have spoken in home-rooms, classroooms, and assemblies, participated in speech contests and PTA meetings. Susan Archibald, Charles Darden, Stan Inouye, and Lyman Shaffer represented BHS in the Lions ' Club speech contests on the topic Conform- ity. Kathi Walt and Doug Shipp spoke at the patriotic assembly of the American Legion, while Renetia Martin and Leif Jenssen participated in a similar capacity here. The Bureau sponsored the Berkeley Hi- Lites programs over Station KRE. Terry Harman MR. EHLERS Sponsor The Hi-Lites Staff spends several hours each week putting out our radio pro- gram, Berkeley Hi-Lites, which is broadcast at 7:15 every Monday eve- ning over Station KRE. We try to bring pertinent news and commentary to those outside of BHS. Of equal importance is the inside news commentary, future activities and schedules, and entertaining skits for Berkeley students. Bel Canto Bel Canto Choir, under the direction of Mr. Thomas, Haynes, has been active this semester, participating in the Choral Festival in Oakland, and in the Annual Spring Concert of all Berkeley High. School Choral groups. Near- ly fifty per cent of our members were advanced to Aeolian Choir for the fall semester, 1963. Mr. Thomas Haynes, Director Bel Canto Choir The Harmoneers is a boys ' chorus composed of students selected for their singing ability. The Harmoneers pro- vided entertainment for many organizations in Berkeley including service groups, churches, junior high schools, P-TA ' s, and assembl ies. Thanks go to our director, Mr. Robert Pearson, Vice- President Walter Norman, and Secretary Earl Washington, who helped make this past semester very successful. Jerome Dangerfield, President Harmoneers ■ I J SgSMk s 1 Harmoneers Concert Chorale The Concert Chorale of the 1963 Spring Semester has been an inspiring and gratifying group. Under the direction of Mr. Pearson, it has successfully produced and performed many chorale pieces requiring hard work and applied talent. The group has itself lived up to and surpassed the expectations demanded by its reputation as one of the finest choirs in high school history. Stu Mogerman, President Concert Chorale This semester ' s Aeolian Choir was composed of seventy- six outstanding girls under the very fine direction of Mrs. Hardester. Highlighting this year ' s activities were a television show, in which we participated, the Spring Festival, and out- side programs for clubs and the Junior High Schools. We also had our traditional dinner party, which was a great success. It is hoped that in the future Aeolian Choir will enjoy as rewarding a semester as this has been and always maintain its fine quality of excellence. Marghie Lovejoy, President Aeolian Choir Aeolian Choir Concert Bond v - ■ • )Mv v i’ mm H i • ,1 | .... | mP wV 48 The Spring semester of 1963 has given the band a new look. In the past, the band has been comprised of approximately ninety individuals. Because of the difficulty in bringing forth musical quality and balance from a group of this size, a change was mads. This large band has now split into two smaller, more balanced groups, the Symphonic Band and the Concert Band. Both bands have been very active throughout this semester. Probably the highlight of the year was the Northern California Music Festival, held in Hayward. Both the bands were judged at this festival, and both groups made good showings, thus upholding the high standards -set by previous BHS bands. The two bands also presented a concert in the Community Theatre, a performance at Willard, and the music for graduation. I would like to express my gratitude to the band officers, Roy Anaclerio, Diana Campagna-Pinto, Stan Inouye, and Sue Eggling, for their assistance. Finally, special thanks go to Mr. Lutt and Mr. Summa, and to the band members, for making this term successful. Dick Morgan, President BHS Band Symphonic Band Dance Band The Dance Band with the fine help of Mr. Lutt and Mr. Summa, has con- tinued the good work of previous semesters. We took part in the Reno Dance Band Festival and in the Riorden High School Dance Band Tour- nament placing very high in each. Stan Inouye Pep Band 59 Concert Orchestra The purpose of the Concert Orchestra is to provide a strong musical program for the more advanced instru- mentalists in the school. This semester, with the fortune of having Mr. Salvatori Martirano as our composer in residence, we have had the rare opportunity of playing music especially composed for our orchestra to fit its instrumentation. The Theater Orchestra is a select group of the best and most interested musicians from Concert Orchestra. This semester it provided the music for Oklahoma! The orchestra, with its new members and new music every year, will certainly have a bright future. JOHN T reasurer JOAN BEATTY President Our class began this spring semester with great hopes and expec- tations. We hoped to have the best time possible while supporting our expected profitable projects. Waiting for sunny weather we began our semester activities a little late, but we were off to a good start with our class movie Gidget in April. From then on our time and effort was occupied with our slope and Casual Day Carnival concessions. We were busy, but we enjoyed it. Even if a project succeeded little financially, it was never a failure. We gained through working together and having a good time. Though we might sometimes have wished we could do things on our own, we realize that to become adults we often must have the assistance of adults. Our thanks to Mr. Wilson, Mr. McNeill, Mrs. Patterson, and our other sponsors for this invaluable help and support. My thanks to you low seniors for the opportunity of serving as your class president, but with even greater feeling I am proud to be one of you You made your semester great! We have reached the final year in our six semester experience at Berkeley High School. As a class, we have accomplished a number of things. It is ridiculous to judge a semester ' s work on financial success alone. We have increased our treasury by a substantial amount, but the real proof of our success is the cooperation which has developed this semester. In the past, we have depended on a small collection of students to represent us as a class. Now we work as an integral part of the school through the efforts of many students working closely together. Our Junior Prom, concession, and Casual Day Pie Throw were rollickingly successful, and I take this opportunity to thank you all, class members as well as sponsors, for all the help I received. Best of everything in the remaining years to come; it ' s been a pleasure serving you. — ° JANET MORGAN Secretary CHERYL DAWSON Social Secretary Ackerman, L. Adair, R. Adams, P. E. Adams, V. E. Low Eleuen Class PHIL OMI President PENNY BROWN Vice President TONI JACKSON T reasurer Upon my election as President of our class, I felt strongly about strengthening our class spirit, but I was some- what dubious as to what to expect from a class of our size. Now I can proudly say that all my doubts are gone. During this semester we have all gotten together and worked very hard to make this semester an over- whelming success, and besides this we ' ve had lots of fun. Memories of putting together our efforts for the slope concession, the Junior Prom and the Casual Day con- cession will always remain with me as high points in the enjoyment of my high school life. I owe my thanks to my fellow officers, Penny, Chris, Toni, and Mary Lou, plus our sponsors headed by Mr. Van Zomeren. But above all, I thank the Low 1 1 class for all the support you have given me. It has been terrific working with such a fine class, and thanks to you my term as president has been both a great experience and pleasure. For this, go my wishes for a successful future, as well as thanks for the opportunity to serve you. CHRISTINE PHILLIPS Secretary MARY LOU BONKOFSKY Social Secretary Abitia, R. A. Anderson, T. For two years, start- ing with JV competition, the team members pointed to this one goal. It was team effort all the way, and it was a wonderful experience and feeling to see them realize this one ambition. Berkeley High School is represented by a fine group of baseball players this season. Only two of these boys were lettermen last year, so much of our suc- cess depends upon the performance of the juniors and sophomores. We probably have one of the smallest double play combinations on record in Gary Wilson and Bobby Basinger, but, despite their size, they do the job well. Dennis Frese does an excellent job at first base, and in addition has hit the ball hard and consistently At third Bob Zaleski has turned in a good per- formance, with a strong arm for the big play. The outfield is handled mainly by soph Roy Couch, juniors Stan Nakahara and Gary Petersmeyer, and senior Bob Payne, a fine hitter and all-around performer. The pitch- ing duties fall primarily to so ph Phil Gumes and juniors Dave Arthur and Danny Garcia, with relief help from seniors Ron Gaines and Lionel Bolden. Senior Lon McCasland does most of the catching, backed up by junior Stan Nakahara, and the club is rounded-out by such good utility men as Bill Popper and Fred Tarr, both seniors, and junior Gerold Bovich Whatever this group may lack in experience is more than made up by the desire to win and the hustle shown by all the boys. It is a real pleasure to work with this club. Spike Hensley Varsity Coach Hensley J.V. Spring 1963 will always be remem- bered for its surge of fifty milers, swim- mers and hikers for the rebamping of the GAA club room and the many Play days. We didn ' t always come out on top at the Play days but by the time the Club room was finished anyone could tell a GAA member she had white hair with yellow and white paint all over her gym clothes. Needless to say the room turned out beau- tifully and the whole project was a great success. The greatest teamwork has been dem- onstrated by my officers with our shining star Miss Johnston. This has been a very good year at Berkeley High for spirit. Of course the motivation for spirit is the team, and the spectators ' desire to help and urge the players. Our team was the first round winner and one of the strongest in Northern California, which proved to be a genuine cause for excitement. The stretch drive made by the team toward winning the overall league championship climaxed by a solid beating of Alameda was the turning point for spirit at Berkeley High. When we did win the league title a greater challenge arose for team and spirit in the Tournament of Champions at Cal. There our team was outstanding and our rooting section was by far the finest demonstration of sportsmanship and organized spirit Berkeley High has ever presented. On Saturday night, with our Jackets playing in the finals, there were approximately 2000 determined, enthusiastic, screaming rooters in our root- ing section that filled up the entire South Side of Harmon gym. Equipped with 12 inch megaphones, balloons, and precision yells led by pink haired cheer leaders, our rooting section literally frightened the 7000 spectators of the game with noise. There are many people responsible for making our rooting section the best in the T.O.C., Mr. Wilson, Mr. Curtice, Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. Lutt, the pep band, Vice President John Stryker, Mike Peggenburg, Frank Needleman, Chuck Josephs, and most important over 2000 white shirted rooters who made up the fantastic Berkeley rooting machine. If the spirit displayed this semester is any indication of what the future holds, there will never again be a spirit problem at Berkeley High School.
