AVAKIAN Membership on a Board of Education is considered by some profound observers of the American scene to be the most important service a citizen may render his community. Certainly few citizens have greater influence on the country’s future, since the education of a people in great measure determines the quality of its government and society. The Board of Education, composed of citizens and elected by citizens, has been a unique development of American education. The growth and strength of free public education have accompanied this development. The very significant number of recent improvements in the quality of education in Berkeley in large measure is a reflection of the interest, perception, insights and devotion of its Board of Education. This quality ultimately is as high as the Board determines it should be. The present Board has set an example for most American communities in its devotion
