8808908 As you go through this Pod, you will notice that the sand in the hourglass at the beginning of each section gets lower and lower and finally runs out. Yet this is not the end, for the hourglass can be turned over and a new start can be made. The three years spent at Berkeley High constitiute only one footprint on the sands of time, only one turning of the hourglass. But this one footprint is extremely important for it is the foundation that enables the graduate to go forth and make contri- butions to the world, to make lasting footprints that will keep his memory bright and strong. A school progresses with its students, and their progress is marked in many ways, among which is their memory or yearbook. This is the last Pod for the graduating class of June, 1961, this and five other Pods have marked their progress. They have progressed with Berkeley High for three years, but now the sand has run out for them, the hour- glass must be turned over, and a fresh start must be made. A Pod, however, is more than a record of pro- gress, it is a symbol of three of the most important years of a person ' s life. Here is one more semester of your life, one more book of memories that can be kept and looked back on. For those of you remaining at Berkeley High, add this Pod to your collection and when the sand has run out for your class, the break with Berkeley High will not be so hard, for you will have your memories as the class of June, 1961, now have theirs. I wish you success and happiness. May the footprints you make be deep and lasting and may your hourglass have many turnings. It was an honor and a pleasure to serve you. As a result of the defeat of the school bonds on April 4, Berkeley High has a rough road ahead. We are all going to have to make the best of the situation, and hope that the future will unfold a path of richer opportunities. We must never lose sight of the fact that defeat is only temporary and that great achievements are the results of continuous efforts for what we believe to be right. Due to a lack of space in classrooms, yards, cafeteria, hallways, and the campus in general, an unusual responsibility will be placed upon each individual student next year. The more crowded our school becomes, the greater is the need for regimentation and in- dividual responsibility. I urge each of you to give serious thought to your role as a member of our fine High School Student Body upon returning next September. Congratulations to our graduating seniors. We are counting on them to uphold Berk- eley High School ' s enviable record, which has been well established over the years. May I sincerely thank all students, staff members, and parents for making my first year at Berkeley High very interesting, challenging, and enjoyable. EMERY J. CURTICE, Principal 6
