Foreword This yearbook, particuarly to the graduating class, represents a memory of three short, happy and wonderful years in which they have experienced some of their most priceless times. The Pod staff has worked long and hard to preserve the memories which everyone reading this book will remember. This yearbook marks the end of a generation of Pods that have received the excellent and able guidance of Mrs. Sidney Wales. Mrs. Wales has endeavored to devote her time outside as well as inside school to the yearbook and the daily paper. She is to be commended for her unflagging spirit and determination in putting out Berkeley High publications. Special thanks should also go to the associate editors and to the art department, which provided excellent art for this book. Our theme this year is Through the Looking Glass. It is designed to provide a vivid picture of life at Berkeley High. The Pod staff has tried to gather all phases of school life. It is hoped that you will appreciate the efforts of Mrs. Wales and the staff. It is a hard job putting out a yearbook, especially with a big senior class. Here are your memories. It has been an honor serving you. Pete Kagel Editor

Goodbye and Good Luck This is my last Pod Message as Principal of Berkeley High. This June, as most of you know, I am retiring as your Principal, and am leaving Berkeley High School. It has been such a pleasant experience these past twenty years, working with a wonderful Faculty and a loyal Student Body. I shall be forever grateful for the attitude shown here at Berkeley High, and I am particularly pleased with the scholarship records made by our alumni and the attitude of our present students in maintaining this record. Because of these outstanding records, among other things, we were selected from all of the High Schools in California to receive the Bellamy Award. Receiving this award was, of course, one of the highlights of my many years at Berkeley High. I am proud of the fact that the Student Body has shown that all racial groups are able to work, play, and prosper together. Here at school, students from every race, nationality, and religious background have learned to live in peace and harmony — a most important accomplishment. My experiences as Principal have been numerous, humorous, and happy, and I am certain that I will always remember them. I hope that as I grow old and gray, students of Berkeley High will stop and say Hello, when and if we meet. I am very proud that I have had the opportunity to serve Berkeley High, and its fine students, Faculty, and parents. Sincerely yours, J. Elwin LeTendre Principal 4
