Speakers ' Bureau HI-LITES LEFT TO RIGHT: Allen Kent, John C. Lewis, Doug Jones, Gary Messinger. Contests, sales pitches, radio, and panel discussions . . . and 65 students make up what is commonly known as our Speaker ' s Bureau. The term started off with a bang as the students went to homerooms and classes to advocate the sales of student body cards and Pods. They also made an appeal for the Red Cross and persuaded people to attend the Senior Play. The first students to represent BHS outside the school were Sally Hunt and Steve Stripp who spoke to the United Veterans Council on Lincoln and Washington respectively. Robin Milczewski, Elizabeth Higgs, Garth Burns, and Harry McCalla represented BHS in the Lions Club student speaker contest. The topic was People to People; Key to World Understanding, and the local winner was Elizabeth Higgs. Mark Duggan, Sheridan Hill, Al Kent, and Estelle Zanders formed a panel and discussed socioeconomic conditions in Berkeley for a group of new teachers at the University of California. Upon her return from the Sguaw Valley trip, Tina Loney spoke on the trip itself at a meeting of the Tyros at the YWCA. As an appeal for the Red Cross, 7 speakers represented BHS at service clubs and PTA meetings. They were Fred Bachmann, Gail Hildebrand, Elaine Judah, Martin Hakahara, Jean Oki, Steve Stripp, and John Woodward. The American Legion speakers were Bill Barker, Irene Lieban, and Victor Chow. Speakers to enter ihe Negro Elks Scholarship contest will be Lynn Farris, Elizabeth Higgs, Harry McCalla, and Estelle Zanders. And we must not forget the group who worked all term on the weekly, fifteen-minute, radio program Hi-lites on KRE (1400). The staff consisted of Doug Jones, editor; Al Kent, newscaster; John Lewis and Gary Messinger, staff members; George Craig, engineer; and Bill Barker, roving reporter. IRENE LIEBAN, Secretary MR.
