O L L A POD BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL BERKELEY PUBLIC LIBRARY R I D A Berkeley, California s p R I N G 19 6 0 Goodbye and Good Luck This is my last Pod Message as Principal of Berkeley High. This June, as most of you know, I am retiring as your Principal, and am leaving Berkeley High School. It has been such a pleasant experience these past twenty years, working with a wonderful Faculty and a loyal Student Body. I shall be forever grateful for the attitude shown here at Berkeley High, and I am particularly pleased with the scholarship records made by our alumni and the attitude of our present students in maintaining this record. Because of these outstanding records, among other things, we were selected from all of the High Schools in California to receive the Bellamy Award. Receiving this award was, of course, one of the highlights of my many years at Berkeley High. I am proud of the fact that the Student Body has shown that all racial groups are able to work, play, and prosper together. Here at school, students from every race, nationality, and religious background have learned to live in peace and harmony — a most important accomplishment. My experiences as Principal have been numerous, humorous, and happy, and I am certain that I will always remember them. I hope that as I grow old and gray, students of Berkeley High will stop and say Hello, when and if we meet. I am very proud that I have had the opportunity to serve Berkeley High, and its fine students, Faculty, and parents. Sincerely yours, J. Elwin LeTendre Principal 4 Foreword This yearbook, particuarly to the graduating class, represents a memory of three short, happy and wonderful years in which they have experienced some of their most priceless times. The Pod staff has worked long and hard to preserve the memories which everyone reading this book will remember. This yearbook marks the end of a generation of Pods that have received the excellent and able guidance of Mrs. Sidney Wales. Mrs. Wales has endeavored to devote her time outside as well as inside school to the yearbook and the daily paper. She is to be commended for her unflagging spirit and determination in putting out Berkeley High publications. Special thanks should also go to the associate editors and to the art department, which provided excellent art for this book. Our theme this year is Through the Looking Glass. It is designed to provide a vivid picture of life at Berkeley High. The Pod staff has tried to gather all phases of school life. It is hoped that you will appreciate the efforts of Mrs. Wales and the staff. It is a hard job putting out a yearbook, especially with a big senior class. Here are your memories. It has been an honor serving you. Pete Kagel Editor Faculty I bid him look into the lives of men as through a mirror, and from others to take an example for himself. — Terence. G O V N M E N T Board of Control STEVE JOHNSON President Berkeley High School is one of the Nation ' s best; this is a fact. We have always excelled in whatever we do. Academically, we have earned the respect of other high schools. In athletics, we have a history of victories. Our theatrical and musical groups have won state-wide acclaim. This past semester has been one of particular success. Our band played for the Winter Olympics. The basketball team went to the Gridley Tourna- ment. The Senior Play was a spectacular production. Our dances were well attended. All our spring sports received much more support from the student body than in the past. The B.O.C., which is notorious for going broke in the Spring, did something revolu- tionary. They had a fund-raising project which came out very well. Student body card sales were good, and our yearbook sales reached an all-time high. This has truly been one of the best Spring semesters Berkeley High has ever seen. But all this success did not just come to us by chance. There were many reasons for it. The Board of Control played an important role. They had a job to do and they did it well. The fact that many of its members went so far out of their way to do the best job possible, made this an out- standing Board. The faculty also helped in many ways. The guid- ance and time which Mr. Nealson and Mr. LeTendre gave us, were invaluable. The services of Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. Okerstrom, and Mr. Lutt will not be forgotten. But these are only individuals. Their actions would be worthless without you, the student body. Our success lies neither in the hands of one, nor those of a hundred. It lies in the hands of over 3000 people who call themselves the students of Berkeley High School. It goes without saying, that your sup- port was the real strength of our school this past semester. And in the semesters to come, the success of the school will always lie in your hands. Give it your best and your reward will be rich. I find it difficult to express my feelings toward the office of president. To say it has been the greatest experience of my life is not enough. My appreciation goes deeper than that. I shall never forget you and this honor which you bestowed upon me. STEVE JOHNSON A.S.B.H.S. Thank you for such a successful semester. I am happy that the G.A. really has swung. All the fun began the second week of the term with the New Girls ' Welcome. For the first time refreshments were served. Next there was the dance. The outstanding feature was real blos- soms to carry out the theme Appleblossom Time. All the dads and daughters received nourishment when they played powderpuff football. Tis a pity the boys could not have had that dinner. If they had, they would have made better pompon boys. It all was fun. I hope the new officers have as fine a time as the old. A thank you and good-bye to all representatives — -Bev, Cassy, Sandy, Anne, Melissa, Roberta and to Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. LeTendre, Mr. Okerstrom, the Jacket Staff and Mrs. Wales, and last, but not least, Mrs. Ulry. I leave you with this thought: Live every day as if it were your last, for one. day you ' ll be right. Once again good-bye and. lots of luck. Sticky Higgs P.S. If you ever wonder which G.A. Council was best, remember us! 12 12th GRADE COUNCIL 11th GRADE COUNCIL 10th GRADE COUNCIL Honor Society SPECIAL PRIVILEGE SEALBEARERS Dianne Lord, Susan Bettelhelm, Anne Richardson, Kristine Guionso, Bill Rentz, Benette Kuper, Diana Loeb, Melissa Foster, Peter Wehausen, Roberl Mathieson, Cynthia Smith, Dean Morgan, Roger Chickering, Bruce Wonder, Steve Johnson. Honor Society laid its emphasis on two major fields of activities this semester: that of maintaining the excellent scholastic record of BHS, and that of stimulating intellectual activities in the student body as a whole. Beside the success- ful annual outing in Golden Gate Park, Honor Society spon- sored a college conference which enabled students to meet representatives from various colleges, and began a collection of college catalogues for general use. My hearty thanks go to vice president Larry Revzan, to the secretary-treasurer, Ginger Henderson; to board mem- bers Katie Wuertele and Ruth Bentley, and to Hatcheck chairman Vickie Hodges for their cooperation and hard work. Without the advice, support and energy of the sponsors: Miss Repetto, Mr. Wenrich, Mr. Daoust, Honor Society would never have achieved as it did this term. The opportunity to serve you as Honor Society president has proved to be a rewarding and enlightening experience for which I am truly grateful. NAOMI LOWINSKY C.S.F. As this term ' s Pod goes to press, most C.S.F. activities are still in the planning stage. This semester we hope to be able to break away from routine matters and establish new func- tions for our organization. Due to the success of last semester ' s College Conference, the C.S.F. hopes to sponsor a second conference to deal solely with the University of California. Also, an informal Honor Society-C.S.F. panel will be established to discuss the problem of choosing one ' s college. The experiences of those who have already done so should be an invaluable aid to those who have not. As usual, the C.S.F. is confronted by financial problems which regular concessions are unable to meet. To fill this need, its officers are attempting to establish a short series of academic contests. Even if these fail, we hope to have set a precedent for next semester. Thanks are due to Benette Kuper and Ruthie Richards, and especially to our mentor, Mr. Wenrich. Above all, I am grateful to the C.S.F. as a whole for having given me the enlightening experience of serving as this semester ' s president. andrew Mcdonald Ju lie Land, Hiro SEALBEARERS Imamura Pat Bonnar, McDonald. Contests, sales pitches, radio, and panel discussions . . . and 65 students make up what is commonly known as our Speaker ' s Bureau. The term started off with a bang as the students went to homerooms and classes to advocate the sales of student body cards and Pods. They also made an appeal for the Red Cross and persuaded people to attend the Senior Play. The first students to represent BHS outside the school were Sally Hunt and Steve Stripp who spoke to the United Veterans Council on Lincoln and Washington respectively. Robin Milczewski, Elizabeth Higgs, Garth Burns, and Harry McCalla represented BHS in the Lions Club student speaker contest. The topic was People to People; Key to World Understanding, and the local winner was Elizabeth Higgs. Mark Duggan, Sheridan Hill, Al Kent, and Estelle Zanders formed a panel and discussed socioeconomic conditions in Berkeley for a group of new teachers at the University of California. Upon her return from the Sguaw Valley trip, Tina Loney spoke on the trip itself at a meeting of the Tyros at the YWCA. As an appeal for the Red Cross, 7 speakers represented BHS at service clubs and PTA meetings. They were Fred Bachmann, Gail Hildebrand, Elaine Judah, Martin Hakahara, Jean Oki, Steve Stripp, and John Woodward. The American Legion speakers were Bill Barker, Irene Lieban, and Victor Chow. Speakers to enter ihe Negro Elks Scholarship contest will be Lynn Farris, Elizabeth Higgs, Harry McCalla, and Estelle Zanders. And we must not forget the group who worked all term on the weekly, fifteen-minute, radio program Hi-lites on KRE (1400). The staff consisted of Doug Jones, editor; Al Kent, newscaster; John Lewis and Gary Messinger, staff members; George Craig, engineer; and Bill Barker, roving reporter. IRENE LIEBAN, Secretary MR. Now the time has come for us to take them off again. But in the weeks between, this semester ' s crew of sixty-one Senior Friends has worked hard to make our motto, Friendship and Service, come alive. Our activities this term have been many and varied. We served as proctors and did many odd jobs. One of our most important jobs has been to welcome the many girls new to Berkeley High, and to help them find friends and activities. Lunch periods have always found Senior Friends on duty in the lobby and cafeteria. We have helped publicize many school events, and ushered at last semester ' s graduation, our Sr. Play, and other performances. Our activities in connection with the Girls ' Association have included the G.A. Welcome, girl- ask-boy dance, Apple Blossom Time, and the G.A. Dinner. My sincere thanks go to our helpful and patient sponsor, Mrs. Ulry, and my ever-faithful co- chairmen, Tina Loney and Cynthia Smith. Honor Society and CFS Tutors Honor Society Hatcheckers and Tutors Honor Society fulfills its purpose as a service organization in its two major functions of hatchecking and tutoring. As many as six students hatcheck at many Community Theatre shows and thus get a chance to see most of the performance. Hatchecking is free of charge; all donations go toward scholarships awarded by Honor Society each semester. Hatcheckers receive Honor Society credit for their work. Tutors are Honor Society members who aid students not doing well in certain fields. Tutors receive Honor Society credit and teaching training from this experience. The amount of time the tutor puts in is flexible, depending on the needs of the students receiving help. BOC Publicity Committee BOB STRICKLIN SUSAN MOSCRIP BETSY BRIGHT President Vice President Secretary KATHY CAPLES LYNN FARRIS Treasurer Social Secretary Senior Message The Senior year will surely be remembered as one of the most enjoyable, wonderful, and memorably impressive periods of our lives. The school and com- munity will remember our class for carrying so well many of the responsibilities of our fine student government, for representing our school well in scholastic pro- grams, dramatic, musical, and speech productions, and for our excellent athletes — some of whom have received state and national recognition. We have had major roles in bringing about many of the school ' s successful activities. The members of the faculty have, as in other semesters, been a great and valuable help to our class. We are especially indebted to Mrs. Schwimley and her work on our spectacular Senior Play; to Mrs. Wales for our fine and exten- sive publicity; Mr. Ehlers, Mr. Asturias, our class sponsors; and all the others who spent the time to sponsor the many senior committees. Our Senior Play had the greatest effect on our class ' spirit. The cast of more than a hundred, all in 17th Century French period costumes, presented the most spectacular performance ever presented by a Bay Area senior class. The performance was grandiose, but the profits were minimal. Never before had a senior class sacrificed their financial security so much to produce such a play for the community. With the financial situation as it was, the class officers and other leaders of our class work incessantly to produce the best year possible with the available resources. It has been a great experience for me to work with you and for you. I will have good thoughts about our class and our success this year. May not one of us fail to succeed in the future. Bob Stricklin H-12 President 26 HIGH TWELVE COUNCIL CLASS HISTORY June 17, graduation day, will mark the end of three years at Berkeley High School for us of the class of Spring 1960. From these years we have gathered much that is worth while, and of these years we have many memories. Starting out with 705 in the L-10, we were the largest class ever to enter Berkeley High Sc hool. We soon became accustomed to our new environment and readily took part in the activities of Berkeley High. The theme of the Soph Hop, the first school dance in wnich we participated, was Sidewalk Cafe, which featured a Parisian motif, and our class concession was popcorn. At Fun Nite we sold cotton candy. The biggest event of our second semester at Berkeley High was the Soph Hop, Edge of Night, which was very successful. Through this dance and our sales concession we increased our class treasury. In the L-ll the dance of the term was our Junior Prom Bewitched. Our class concession was candied apples and at Fun Nite we sponsored a record breaking booth. Upon entering the H-ll we became upperclassmen and we began to increase our activities, realizing that our senior year was very close. The theme of our Junior Prom was Round About Midnight. In the L-12 we sold candied apples and cooperated with the Cinema Society in the successful presentation of the movie, The Enemy Below. Finally came out last semester and we were high seniors. Members of our class tried out for the Senior Play, became Rally Boys and Senior Friends, and joined Senior Committees. The Senior Play was The Would-Be Gentleman, a sophisticated comedy by Moliere, which was well performed by 105 high school seniors to the delight of a large audience. The graduating class of almost 650 wer outstanding in many fields. In sports, we both contributed to winning teams and produced individual stars. In scholarship, we produced 12 Special Privilege Sealbearers and 6 National Merit Semifinalists. Thus we came to the end of a long and memorable stay at Berkeley Hiah School. After graduation our paths will separate, many of them never to cross again. Some of us will go on to higher education, others will enter the armed forces, and some will enter jobs. Wherever we go, we will always remember Berkeley High School. We will remember it for the friendships we have made here, the knowledge we have accumulated, and the experiences we have gained. For these things, we will remember Berkeley High. L-12 CLASS MESSAGE As you can see by our picture, the L-12 class is small. However, size is not always a measure of spirit. The members of the L-12 class have shown, by their support of such activities as our class movie, The Eddy Duchin Story and our class concession, candied apples, that they possess great spirit. They also participated ac- tively on the Ditch Day Committees and Ditch Day itself. It has been my honor and privilege this last term to serve such an enthusiastic class; I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, especially the class itself, who made this experi- ence possible. Thank you, VIC ICHIOKA L-12 President L-ll Class Council and Officers Steve Casey, president; Bob Fox, vice president: Jane Railton, secretary; Kathy Rhoda, treasurer; Joan Tschier- schky, social secretary. L-ll CLASS MESSAGE This term has been a very successful one for our class. Our horizons have been broadened and our treasury has been increased. Our Junior Prom, Soir A Paris was a huge success. It was held April Fools ' Day in the Social Hall, but despite these factors, everyone had a good time. During the spring semester all activities are hard to pull over. Considering this, I think we did quite well. At this time I would like to thank the whole class for electing me to this office. It has been an honor and a great responsibility. I would also like to thank the class council and our sponsors for the tremendous job they did. This spring ' s BOC has done many new and different things. Serving on it has been an ex- perience I will never forget. Thank you again and have a great summer! Your friend, STEVE CASEY L-l 1 President WP a mm ' m MIW— • M f T H-ll Class Council and Officers Dave Gordon, president; Ann Rabun, vice president; Nanette Hayes, secretary; Judi Gordon, treasurer; Carol Collins, social secretary. H-ll CLASS MESSAGE Our H-ll term has been a success in many ways. For one, we succeeded in increasing our treasury. Far more important, however, was that our class finally became unified. Besides the Junior Prom and our slope concession, there was impressive support for our other class activities, such as the sale of address stickers, and our class movie. By rallying to meet the problems inherent in such a large class, we functioned as a unit. Thou gh a large class does have many problems, it also has many leaders. This term, our class uncovered these leaders. There were 773, each a leader in his own way. To every one of you goes my gratitude for your efforts. To you also goes my gratitude for allowing me to serve as your class presi- dent. The experience has been the most enriching of my life. May I hope that you will not forget this most successful term. I can assure that I will remember it always. DAVE GORDON H-ll President i H-10 MESSAGE During this past semester I have gained valuable knowledge in representing you, my classmates, on the BOC as H-10 President. I wish everyone could have this opportunity. I want to thank all of you for allowing me this honor. I want to thank all those who helped make the Soph Hop a huge success. This was only possible due to the tenth grade spirit. Our class has grown in strength and will continue to grow. We have the biggest class in number and the biggest in spirit too, It ' s a real privilege to be leader of this class for a semester. Thank-you again. ROCKY WARNER H-10 President 63 L-10 CLASS MESSAGE This past semester has been an enjoyable and profitable one for our L-10 Class. Our concession week and the Soph Hop were both great successes, thanks to the wonderful cooperation of the L-10 Class, Mr. Constant, Mr. Dickey, and the support of the student body. I would like to thank the L-10 Class for electing me their president. It has been a new and exciting experience for me, and I hope I have gotten our class off to a good start at BHS. Last, but not least, I would like to express my thanks to the BOC and the faculty members for all the help they have given us. They were always ready to help us, and our class is looking forward to the coming semesters together with them. Sincerely, LESLIE UCHIDA L-10 President SENIOR PLAY The Senior Class of Berkeley High School presents Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme or The Would-Be Gentleman by Moliere This production is dedicated to our principal MR. Director Mrs. Florence Schwimley BHS BAND AND A CAPPELLA AT SQUAW VALLEY OLYMPICS CONCERT BAND DANCE BAND Spring ' 60! These words will forever re- sound from the walls of A201, for this semester has been the greatest the band has ever seen. The big event, of course, was the VIII Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley. With the A Cappella, we left early Wednesday morn- ing, February 17, in a caravan of five buses. However, Thursday was the big day. After re- hearing — and freezing — all morning, we were honored by being one of two bands to stand in the very center of the Tower of Nations. We returned Friday night, after stopping off in Sacramento for a delicious buffet dinner. The other major activity of the term was the Music Festival, held at Modesto on May 7. We also presented concerts at each of the junior highs, and gave a Spring Concert in the Park. I would like to thank the band officers, Andy Benson, Bobby Jones and Ralph Newcom, for all the work they ' ve done this term. And special thanks go to the man who has made all this possible, Mr. Bob Lutt. DEAN MORGAN President This term ' s Dance Band started with a dismal outlook, because we lost five members, two of them section leaders, to graduation or program- ming conflicts at the change of the semester. However, with several sophomores coming in and everyone working extremely hard, the group has developed to where it is one of the best ever heard at BHS. Our performances this term included the GA Dance, Apple Blossom Time ; several assem- blies, of which the Talent Assembly was one; and the junior concerts, given wit h the band. I would like to thank Mr. Bob Lutt for his in- spirational guidance and great efforts, which have made possible many of the things we have -done and much of the success of the term. And I want to thank every member of the Dance Band for working so intensively. We have grown from twenty individuals playing together to a unit of twenty people. The cooperation and atti- tude, not to mention the musical improvement, have made leading this group one of the most enjoyable jobs I have even undertaken. DEAN MORGAN Student Director CONCERT ORCHESTRA This season has been one of the most am- bitious in the history of the Concert Orchestra, both from the standpoint of musical experience and public performance. The most important event of the season was the performance for the California Music Edu- cators conference in Monterey, where the Or- chestra played for a conductors ' clinic and gave a separate forty-five minute concert. In March, the Orchestra gave a special spring concert of its own in the Berkeley Community Theater, featuring not only the Orchestra itself, but some of its more outstanding soloists. In addition, the Orchestra has participated in the Northern California Orchestra and Band Festival in Modesto, where they received a Superior rating. LARRY DUCKLES Publicity Manager CHAMBER ORCHESTRA The Chamber Orchestra is a small group composed of the elite of the Concert Orches- tra, where its primary function is to perform for the Operetta and the Senior Play. This season was of particular interest in that the orchestra performed the incidental music, written by Richard Strauss, to Moliere ' s, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, this semester ' s Senior Play. In addition, the Chamber Orchestra has par- ticipated in the Northern C alifornia Orchestra and Band Festival in Modesto, where they re- ceived a Superior rating. A special patriotic program, FREEDOM IS OUR BUSI- NESS, opened activiiies early in the semester, taking place Friday evening, February 12 in the Community Theater. February 17, 18, and 19 were spent taking part in the Opening Ceremonies of the VIII Olympic Winter Games. In the month of April, the Choir was scheduled for six very important performances, and at the present time is pre- paring for singing at graduation on June 17. Officers of the Choir were President, Gene Hennen; Vice-President, Bill Barker; Secretary, Dianne Lord; Treasurer, Russel Young; Librarians, Pat Farris, chairman, Paula Davenport and Margie Week; Robe committee: Beverly Hines, chairman, Kathy Allen, Bill Johnson, and Felton Joseph; Accompanists: Garnel Copeland and Hiro Imamura. Aeolian Choir The Aeolian Choir was again up to full strength this term, numbering 80 members. Repertoire included Ave Maria and Song from Ossian ' s Fingal by Brahms; The Birth of Moses, by Lockwood; and compositions by Joseph Clokey, Marcel Frank, Karl Ahrendt, and Horace Samuels. Officers of the Aeolian Choir were: President, Sandy James; Vice President, Theon Berkley; Secretary-Treasurer, Gayle Evans; Librar- ians: JoAnn Goble, chairman, Sara Smith and Ann Sarzin; Robe committee: Barbara Beach, Janice Black, Virginia Fischer; Accompanists: Christine Ghiorso, Betty Quan, und Garnell Copeland. Harmoneers With 48 members, the largest number in the group ' s his- tory, The Harmoneers started the spring semester auspici- ously. Keeping a steady eye on the main objective, the C.M.E.A. Choral Festival, the group worked on a wide vari- ety of repertoire including three 18th Century English Glees; Beethoven ' s Contemplation; To Music by Schubert; the Navy Hymn; and the folk songs Black Is The Color Of My True Love ' s Hair, Hullabaloo-Belay, and Good News! The officers of the Harmoneers were President, Felton Jo- seph; Vice-President, Garnell Copeland; Secretary-Treasurer, Frank Fox; Accompanist, Garnell Copeland; Librarians, Clar- ence Walker, Jess James. BASEBALL The 1960 edition of Coach George Wilson ' s Varsity baseball team showed a lineup sprinkled with returning lettermen and boys playing their first year of varsity ball. Of the starters, four boys, Harold Gilson, Tom Fife, Jim Couch and Walt Dixon won letters in previous years. Senior pitcher Rich Colbert got his first opportunity at a starting role and pitched well. Sophomore Gene Nakamura and Senior John Allen, Charlie Carter and Dick Gayer filled out the starting lineup. Sophomore pitcher Mike Barckmcm performed well in limited appear- ances and is a fine prospect for the future. During the practice season, Coach Wilson experimented with the younger boys and the team lost a few games through inexperience and bad breaks. After he set his lineup, the team began to jell, and through the pitching of Col- bert and Gilson and the hitting of Couch, Gilson, Fife and Dixon, the club looked like a strong contender of the title which BHS has won for the past two years. The J.V. team, coached by Palmer Whitted, is composed of Sophomores and Juniors who are gaining experience toward the varsity. The team is well bal- anced and should provide a sound nucleus for next year ' s Varsity. Some of the J.V.s include: Witten, Petersmeyer, McCray, Cooper, White, Cordova, Libbey, Mueller and pitchers Neely and Bovich. (J.V. photo on page 85.) BASKETBALL VARSITY The 1959-1960 Varsity Basketball team had quite a successful season in which they finished second to Richmond in the Northern Alameda County Athletic League. In practice games the Jackets defeated all opponents until they trav- eled to Fresno where they were defeated twice, 49-47 by Fresno High and 61-40 by Roosevelt High. In league play the Jackets finished with a 4-4 record, placing them second. The over-all record of 17-7 gave the Jackets an invitation to the Gridley Tournament where they placed second for the second season in a row. Vallejo beat them in the finals. J.v. The J.V. Basketabll team finished the season in second place behind El Cer- rito. The young Jackets finished the sea- son with a record of eight wins and four losses. The team played 17 games during the season in which Joe Thompson, Mel Pierre, Don Jackson, Leo Siepert and Skinny Harris made the squad quite strong. ' B ' Hail the champions of the NACAL B competition. Coach Elgin Erickson started the season with only two returning letter- men and after a shaky start the Bees developed into a team that suffered only one league defeat. The strong bench which forms next year ' s team helped the Bees get through many important victories. Charlie Rifleman Clemmons, the team ' s captain and M.V.P. recipient, edged out Kats Nomura, Ron Takahashi, and Steve Schwarz in the scoring. With half the schedule completed, Berkeley led with a 3-0 mark. BHS should complete the sea- son undefeated in League play. On the entire season the netters stood with an excellent 5-2 mark. The upended Los Lomas, Alameda, Harry Ells, Richmond, and Acalanes while losing to Miramonte and Acalanes. This term ' s outstanding members were Nick Hoogs, Roger Chickering, Al Pierce, John Wells, George Duff, and Steve Morgan. Other members were Tom Boyden, Gene Cantin and Mike Han- sen. Hoogs, Morgan, Boyden, Cantin and Han- sen will return next year to make next season a probable winning one. Berkeley High ' s varsity golf team swept to a successful season under Coach Elgin Erickson in 1960. The top six golfers, who played most of the matches were Steve Eickert, Dave Elkins, Dave Hudspeth, Paul Wilcox, Leonard Leggett, and Jim Shell. All home matches were player at the Rich- mond Country Club and all matches were on Mondays. The matches were played on a stroke basis, which means that the team with the lowest scores wins. The future of the team looks very bright be- cause three of the top six, Dave Elkins, Leonard Legget, and Paul Wilcox, will be back next year. 84 TRACK B TRACK The Spring ' 60 edition of the Jacket spikers found them getting off to a relatively slow start as Coach Rich Hacker experimented during the first part of the season to discover the right com- bination for another Berkeley powerhouse. Record setters for the Jackets were: Mac Lyons, 18.9 lows; Harry McCalla, 1:55.4 880 and 4:18.0 mile; and the state ' s best shot-putter, Matt Baggett, 60 ' 8 . Kinchen and Bolden may break records before the season ' s end but they along with Stone, Douglas, and Halton will be missed by Coach Hacker who will have Agrusa, Fiske, Harris, Peppin an d Williams back. As this copy is going to the press before the season is over, many of the times and records may be bettered by the end of the season. The Varsity won the ACAL meet. The B thinclads started to jell near the end of the season after suffering a mediocre first half. Coach Hacker brought the team along slowly and molded it into a machine with the following athletes as vital cogs of the machine: HH — Russ, Icanberry; 660 — Young, Montano, Haynes; 75 — Kent, Williams, Cook; 330 — Ray- mond, Williams, Chambers; LH — Russ Ican- berry; 150 — Raymond, Kent, Chambers; 1320 — Noyes, Fong; BJ — Raymond, Russ; HJ — Cook; PV — Jones; SP — Sanchez; D — Sanchez. Coach Hacker looks forward to the develop- ment of Gerald Russ, Wilbur Williams, and Larry Raymond into future track stars on the varsity next year. L VARSITY SWIMMING BEE SWIMMING The Varsity Swimming team experienced one of its most successful seasons so far by ending up with 10-3 record. The powerful Jackets over- powered such perennially strong school as Se- quoia, Acalanes, Las Lomas, and the California Frosh. Led by team captain Ken Willmarth, the Jackets suffered losses before Bellarmine, Ala- meda, and San Leandro, all by close scores. Many outstanding swimmers appeared on Coach Caesar Gomez ' team, including such con- sistent winners as Lowell Yamashita, Larry Flick, Dick Jacobberger, Tom Jochums, and Ilkka Suvanto. Graduating lettermen include Pete Shipp, Don Hawker, Ken Wilmarth, and Steve Beach. The Varsity placed second in the ACAL meet. This year the Bee Swimming team, coached by Mr. Tom Parker, was one of the strongest groups in the ACAL. Led by such swimmers as Leonard, Feldman, Jacoby, Scherr, and Pereira, the Bees managed to take the majority of their meets, setting new pool and school records in such events as the 100 yard individual medley and the relays. The actual size of the Bee team indicates that they will be a dominating power in next year ' s competition. Graduating team members are Dan Hirano and Fred Morgan. The Bees won the ACAL. 86 . Pi VARSITY GYMNASTICS In its first year the Varsity Gymnastics team won 2 and lost 3 to finish fifth in the Northern California Gymnastic League. The Junior Varsity had a 4 and 1 record in League competition. The most consistent point makers for the Varsity were Glen Jackson, Mike Brown, James Gardner and Captain Norman Nakahara. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL The Intramural Basketball Pro- gram started out very actively this term as boys competed every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Intramural Program al- lows the participants to workout and release the tension that ac- mulates after every school day. The tough top flight competi- tion offered by the program al- lowed valuable experience for prospective Varsity, J.V., and B players. The basketball coaches have also used the program to deter- mine the caliber and potentiality of future stars. The program was directed by Coach Elgin Erick- sen. J.V. BASEBALL I 87 G. A. A The Girls ' Athletic Association has been headed by a very enthusiastic and efficient council this semester. I would like to thank those who have made my term as G.A.A. president an experience that I shall never forget. I recog- nize and especially express my gratitude to Mrs. Yukie, G.A.A. sponsor; Kathie Wuertle, vice president; Lynn Guffy, secretary; Barbara Daily, treasurer; and to all of our faithful faculty sponsors. The membership of G.A.A. has increased steadily this semester with the addition of new activities. The Council has endeavored to stim- ulate a greater cross-section of members by presenting a versatile program. The activities have been expanded to include a weekly col- umn in the Jacket entitled Gym Shorts, written by Patricia Sandkuhle and compiled by the Physical Education Teachers and the Council members. I hope that the Swim Show and the G.A.A. Picnic will become important parts of every se- mester ' s calendar in the future and that the semi-annual Slumber Party will be a welcomed activity to all Berkeley High School Girls. The tournament program this semester has included interclass competition in basketball with a week set aside for the Championship playoffs. The Northern California Badminton Association held its annual tournament in the Berkeley High School Gymnasium as usual with girls from G.A.A. acting as hostesses. I consider it an honor to have served as G.A.A. president and I sincerely wish my new successor the best of luck next semester. May G.A.A. always prosper in its endeavors and become one of the most important factions of every girl ' s life. Most humbly submitted. ROBERTA LOGAN G.A.A. President Spring 1960 G.A.A. This year was different from former terms in that the whole time was spent in the production of one finished play, rather than a series of smaller projects. Planning was also begun for next year ' s presentation, a musical comedy. RUSSIAN CLUB In a time when we need a better understanding of ideologies, the Russian Club at BHS is seeking to further their knowledge of both pre- and postrevolu- tionary cultures. The president is Natalie Shekeko, vice president is Liza Prescop, secretary-treasurer is Steve Stripp. The group is sponsored by Mr. Moore. BRIDGE CLUB The Bridge Club was formed this semester by its ardent instructor, Mr. Schrump. During its first few- sessions of instruction the multitude of participants learned bidding sys- tems developed by Goren, Okie, and Schrump. The remainder of meetings were held at the Palm Room of the Y.M.C.A. where members applied newly taught principles at card tables. The club promises to be ad- vantageous to experts as well as to beginners. Officers elected this semester in- clude: George Duff, president; Jim Dean, vice president; Ann South- wick, secretary-treasurer. A rating system was set up similar to that used in American Contract Bridge League, and members are rated by quizzes and bridge playing as to their proficiency. GEORGE DUFF, President DISCUSSION CLUB The purpose of the Discussion Club is to debate controversial sub- jects such as theology, conscientious objecting, segregation, and capital punishment. Our format this se- mester has included guest speakers, movies, and other activities divorced from the school. The club is spon- sored by Miss Rodriguez, and has Norman Givant as its monitor. CRAFT CLUB The Craft Club is a workshop for students who are interested in mak- ing jewelry, in weaving, in carving, and in tooling leather. It provides an opportunity for experimenting with many materials. For example, students may work with a great vari- ety of metals including sterling sil- ver, copper, brass, pewter, and nickel silver. It is a chance for those who have crowded programs to begin a new hobby or to continue with an old interest. No officers. Mrs. Lawson is the sponsor. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT Junior Achievement is a national educational program with learning based on actual business experi- ence. Students organize their own company in the Fall semester, they decide on a product, sell stock, make and sell their product, keep books, pay themselves nominal wages, pay for supplies, and finally liquidate their firm and repay the investors. Some of the local sponsors of Junior Achievement are Colgate, Palm- olive, Cutter Laboratories, J. F. Hink, and Ryerson Steel. COSTUME PRODUCTION Created as a service class to help with dramatic and musical produc- tions. Costume Production functions as an activity before and during stage presentations at Berkeley High. At this time the girls measure for costumes, order costumes and after they arrive from the rental house, alter, repair and handle them. Occasionally, the girls make costumes; this year twelve wigs were made for the Senior Play. When not working on a produc- tion, the girls of this class study historic costume and modern cos- tume for background information. As a final project, each girl must construct a garment for herself doing original designing. U.N. FORUM United Nations forum meets for the purpose of promoting interest and understanding in the United Nations. The forum participated in the model U.N. at Cal, representing Burma and Israel. A potluck dinner followed the conference. Other ac- tivities included an intramural model U.N. and a picnic at Tilden. Cynthia Smith won the U.N. essay contest. Mrs. Sue Smith was the sponsor. Officers were lack Singer, president; Andy MacDonald, vice president; Stephanie Bjorndahl, secretary- treasurer. CLAVIER ENSEMBLE The only achievement of the Cla- vier Ensemble this term was the performance of Bach ' s Concerto tor four pianos in the Berkeley High Orchestral Concert on March thirty- first. Cornell Copeland, Christine Ghiorso, Julie Land and Sue Wood were the pianists. We hope to be more active next term when several more talented pianists will be join- ing the group. Chairman, Christine Ghiorso Secretary, Susan Wood THE INVESTOR ' S CLUB The Investor ' s Club is organized for those students interested in any field of investing. This year I.C. in- vestigated the stock market. It sold fifty shares of its own stock and purchased one share of common stock in Caterpillar Tractor Co. on the New York Stock Exchange. At the end of the semester I.C. will sell the stock and divide the earn- ings among the shareholders. Ac- tivities in the folk arts that take place in the Bay Area are brought to the members attention. Besides learning new and inter- esting songs from all parts of this country, members have also learned some from other lands. The club is led by Charlotte Koh- ler, president; and Polly Vlamis, program chairman. Mr. J. O. Asturias is the club ' s sponsor. MANUSCRIPT CLUB The club is perhaps best described as a group of aspiring young writ- ers. They help one another gain experience in all aspects of literary endeavor by offering constructive criticism during meetings. Oral reading of works under dis- cussion also helps develop the par- ticipant ' s self-confidence. This term the club published its annual presentation of student writ- ings, The Manuscript. Its production was accomplished under the super- vision of the club officers with much assistance from the school Art De- partment. President: Jim Paltridge. BHS WEIGHTLIFTING CLUB Under the direction of Frank Fox, president; Don Mikus, vice presi- dent, and Andrew Dominic, secre- tary-treasurer, the weightlifting club has had its most successful semes- ter. Considerable interest in the ac- tivities of the club has led to an increase in membership. Among the activities of the club are: preparation for competition with other Teen-age weightlifting clubs in the Bay Area and training for the interclub competition for the perpetual trophy. This trophy will be awarded to the most outstanding member of the club. In addition, the members are planning to attend sev- eral weightlifting meets to gather information to help them in their own training. 99 CINEMA SOCIETY The Cinema Society presents films to tne school for classes and clubs who wish to increase their funds. The Society does most of the pro- jection, stage work, and business management for these productions. This semester the Society showed The Eddie Duchin Story in co- operation with the L-12 class. The officers are as follows: George Craig, president; Doug Williams, vice president; Francis Young, sec- retary-treasurer. Mr. M. Patterson is sponsor. DEMOCRATIC CLUB The Democratic Club has been re- organized for this important election year because of what it believes to be resurgent student interest in party politics. The club is composed of students who are interested enough in poli- tics to have a partisan viewpoint. The club hopes to enlighten its mem- bers about state and local issues, showing the objectivity of the Demo- crats ' ideas on the topics discussed. We feel that it is important to de- velop party politics on a local level — an idea of the Democratic Party which has been realistically and factually carried out by its unique grass-roots organization, of which we are part. EL CLUB ESPANOL A deeper appreciation of Spanish and Spanish-American traditions. This is the primary objective of El Club Espanol. Last semester some of our activi- ties included a dinner in San Fran- cisco, where the members ate Span- ish food, a trip to Monterey to see some of the sights of the old Spanish City, and the traditional spring pic- nic at Tilden. We also invited guest speakers from Spanish-speaking countries to our meetings. BIOLOGY CLUB The Biology Club was organized to give interested students a look at the various phases of Biology. This semester it was especially suc- cessful in its aim, for several trips were planned to various biological labs and also one or two field trips were planned. With this program the Biology Club promised to be very rewarding to all its members. The president to the Biology Club is Paul De Benedictis, the vice presi- dent, Trudy Noller, and the secre- tary-treasurer, Irene Vidaurri. The sponsor is Mr. Caburi. 00 CHESS CLUB The Chess Club meets every Wednesday after school in room A 101. The primary purpose of the club is to provide an opportunity for interested students to learn how to play the game, or, if expert al- ready, to test their skill against other players. Sponsor, William C. Fiedler MATH CLUB Students interested in the discus- sion of mathematics not covered in regular classes, or going more deep- ly into topics which are covered at BHS are invited to attend the Math Club. One of its goals this term to be able to offer a full scholarship to one of our students going abroad. The members of this club have proven to be very enthusiastic about this term ' s activities which include: a costume party; a light bulb sale and a display of souvenirs brought by foreign exchange students. BHS YOUNG REPUBLICANS The Berkely High Young Republic- ans was organized to give Berkeley High students a better opportunity to actively help the election of, and become associated with, the candi- dates of the Republican Party. The Young Republicans, under the spon- sorship of Mr. Tom Parker, were allied with the National Nixon for President Clubs and worked vigor- ously on precinct and district elec- tion work. Officers were Bob Strick- lin, president; Bruce Wonder, vice president; Susan Bettelheim, secre- tary. WE ' LL ALWAYS Mr. LeTendre Principal J. Elwin LeTendre is leaving Berkeley High. Yes, it is true, but only the person -will leave. The spirit which he exemplified here will remain. And the memories will remain. For the faculty there will be memories of an excellent administrator and friend — one who never asked anyone to do something that he would not do himself, one who was easy to work with, always encouraging, always open to suggestions. The thousands of students who knew him as Principal will remember him always. Here is a man who has given great strength to us. He placed nearly all student body affairs in our hands. The trust and confidence which he placed in us was extraordinary. The student body government controled student ac- tivities. He had the power of the veto over the student government, but to the best of my knowledge he never used it. He had a keen interest in student affairs. When there was an event — he was there. He played, as always, in our student- faculty basketball game this past season. One of Mr. LeTendre ' s most outstanding policies was the open door to his office. Anyone, student or Mayor, could come to see him without an appoint- ment at any time. In his office, all were equals, whether you were a student or a faculty member. Mr. LeTendre has led Berkeley High to great success. We would not have attained such a high national rating in scholarship without his leadership. It must be pleasing to him to look back over the years — to think of the excellent teams which played for his school, to think of the Band, Orchestra, A Cappella which achieved high honors, to think of outstanding dramatic performances, to contemplate success in all fields through the years. Yes, Mr. LeTendre, you have much to be proud of, just as we are proud of you. We will never forget you. You and your high school will be among our fondest memories. Good-bye and good luck, Mr. LeTendre. STEVE JOHNSON ASBHS President REMEMBER Mrs. Sidney Wales To express adequate thanks and acknowledgement for all that Mrs. Sidney Wales has done during her teaching career here at Berkeley High would require a volume of at least the size of this Pod. Mrs. Wales, however, probably wouldn ' t care much about the length, if just once her name were spelled correctly. That ' s right; it is Sidney, not SYdney. Berkeley High is fortunate in being one of the few high schools in the nation to have a daily paper. Not only does it serve as a better training ground for journalism and printing, but the Jacket serves as a major unifying force in school life. The whole range of academic and extracurricular activities has benefited from the increased interest sparked by the more complete coverage made pos- sible by a daily newspaper. Producing any kind of publication is a hectic job, and producing a daily one is even more hectic, but Mrs. Wales has done not merely a successful job in managing and advising Olla Podiida and Jacket production, she has done an outstanding one. BHS owes a large part of its success to the Daily Jacket, which in turn owes much of its success to Mrs. Wales. I hope these few words have helped to express the thanks of all the past Pod and Jacket staffs, as well as a great many students and teachers, to Mrs. Wales for all she has done, as ou r adviser and friend.
