PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Tbe sun sinks slowly in the West—” All through your lives your horizons have been ever widening. Things close at hand today, such as graduation, were only yesterday a part of the horizon. In the future as you keep on learning, your horizons will have widened still farther and other goals will have been attained. It is likewise with the world, and the horizon of education in particular. In this age of automation more and more machines arc taking over for man. Yet these machines arc not narrowing man’s world by giving him less to do, but instead arc widening it still farther. Regardless of your field or vocation, you can only succeed by being really interested in it and by putting your whole self into your work. For it is only by giving that you can receive. The story of the boy who went in search of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is a familiar one. This same situation may be applied to you when you are working in your chosen field. If you really work hard always striving for your goal, you will find your pot of gold, which will be the satisfaction of accomplishment and the knowledge that you have done something useful for your community, state or country. With the following words in mind, go forth, High Seniors, and attain your goals: With every rising of the sun, Think of your life as just begun ... With God Himself to bid the twain, Go forth brave hearts; attain! Attain!”

FOREWORD THE NEW HORIZON Wc arc now at the threshold of our lives. We arc engaged in activities which will be happy memories in our future lives, but there will be no time to pause and reflect on these pleasant times unless we pause now to look to that future. Only by setting our goals now can wc have the desired success. Our threshold has many paths leading from it. Some of us will take the path that leads to further education; some will take the road to earning a livelihood. Never again will all our paths cross, nor will wc be joined together as wc are now on the doorstep of the adult world. Once through this doorway wc will move to a time in our lives where it is essential to know ourselves because the main burden of adult responsibilities will lie in our own hearts and minds. These last three years at Berkeley High School have given us the tools for this necessary introspection. Now is the time for us, the Fall Class of 1958 to take up these tools and with them make a meaningful life for ourselves. Behold wc stand at the door and knock,” and the answer that we receive will be largely determined by the manner in which wc look to the new horizon. Wishing you only the best,
