The purpose of the American Field Service is to develop understanding among the nations. Right after the war, the millions of packages the Europeans received from America, were evidence that you Americans arc concerned about the problems of the rest of the world. Today everyone is aware of the need for friendship and tolerance among all the nations. The AFS is one very important organization which has already succeeded in helping to reach this aim. I have talked to former exchange students and I realized that they had become more tolerant. Old prejudices arc absent from their thinking. I am here for the purpose of learning about the United States and to make friends with you. It is good for you, too, to learn about my country Germany, because we can only have a satisfactory relationship as we know and understand one another. I am grateful that there are families who open their homes, and schools like Berkeley High, which give the opportunity to learn about the United States. I am happy that I may have part in the AFS organization and I will try to add as much as I can to the program. Gesine Topp Oldenburg i ddbg. Qucllcnwcg 71 Germany Cacilicnschulc Oldenburg American Field Service was founded in 1914, when American volunteers began to take care of wounded soldiers in France in World War I. After World War II, AFS began to draw up plans for giving young foreign people a chance to come to the U.S. as exchange students. And so the first AFS students came over, first into colleges only, but then in 1947 also into high schools. The father” of this idea was Mr. Hephcn Yalatti. This kind man is well known to every AFS student. First exchange students from Finland came over in 1948. At first the number of students was small, but it grew and this year 45 boys and girls were sent to American high schools. Nowadays Americans have a chance to go to Finland as AFS students, too. Not until after my arrival did I really understand how wonderful AFS program is. It opens an entirely new world for young foreign people. And to learn all new things is a really nice experience. I have had a very good time in BHS this semester and I am sure that I will learn even more during the time that I have left. Juhani Ojajarvi P-ffaaga Ohjaajantie I N 119 Finland
