PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Graduation is over. The Auditorium is empty. The Seniors have left our Campus and compulsory school days are over. What has the three-year attendance at Berkeley High School meant to the graduating Seniors? Has it provided them with the necessary tools for earning a living, attending college, or becoming a useful and law-abiding citizen in the community? Our school has been a living laboratory in Human Relations. All the students from all of Berkeley have attended our school, and we have tried to prove that all races and religions can live in peace and work in harmony. This lesson alone will be most useful in later life, if practiced as you have practiced it during your school days. I hope that you have learned to judge people as individuals, at the same time remembering that all individuals differ and sometimes it is our difference that binds us closer together. If all individuals were good, the world too would be good. Your education should have prepared you to meet this challenge. Someone has said, ' Strangers are friends we have not met yet. How true! In a day, in an age, in a world where unity means strength and power, we cannot afford to rely on myopic vision—that process of drawing a circle about ourselves. For we may be the center of the circle, but NEVER the circumference. Berkeley High—the students and faculty—have shown few symptoms of this myopic vision, this narrowness. Rather we have set an example for the world to follow. A large, mixed group, we live together peaceably without having to be forced into it. In our unity, we lead . . . others and ourselves. But we are not as far advanced as some might have us think. We believe that we have come a long way in our progress. We have. But the end is not yet in sight. We must continue to make bigger circles and to enlarge the ones we have already made. We have only begun. The Pod Staff has tried to capture and record our progress for you to see. We are proud of it and we hope that you will share our pride. Now may I offer to you and to the world, the product of the unity of the Pod Staff and the leadership of Mrs. Sidney Wales, the Fall 1957 Olla Podrida ... a symbol of unity and leadership.
