GEORGE MOORE OLLA PODRI DA FALL 1957 BERKELEY HIGH Berkeley, California PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Graduation is over. The Auditorium is empty. The Seniors have left our Campus and compulsory school days are over. What has the three-year attendance at Berkeley High School meant to the graduating Seniors? Has it provided them with the necessary tools for earning a living, attending college, or becoming a useful and law-abiding citizen in the community? Our school has been a living laboratory in Human Relations. All the students from all of Berkeley have attended our school, and we have tried to prove that all races and religions can live in peace and work in harmony. This lesson alone will be most useful in later life, if practiced as you have practiced it during your school days. I hope that you have learned to judge people as individuals, at the same time remembering that all individuals differ and sometimes it is our difference that binds us closer together. If all individuals were good, the world too would be good. Your education should have prepared you to meet this challenge. Someone has said, ' Strangers are friends we have not met yet. How true! Your Principal, J. Elwin LeTendre 4 In a day, in an age, in a world where unity means strength and power, we cannot afford to rely on myopic vision—that process of drawing a circle about ourselves. For we may be the center of the circle, but NEVER the circumference. Berkeley High—the students and faculty—have shown few symptoms of this myopic vision, this narrowness. Rather we have set an example for the world to follow. A large, mixed group, we live together peaceably without having to be forced into it. In our unity, we lead . . . others and ourselves. But we are not as far advanced as some might have us think. We believe that we have come a long way in our progress. We have. But the end is not yet in sight. We must continue to make bigger circles and to enlarge the ones we have already made. We have only begun. The Pod Staff has tried to capture and record our progress for you to see. We are proud of it and we hope that you will share our pride. Now may I offer to you and to the world, the product of the unity of the Pod Staff and the leadership of Mrs. Sidney Wales, the Fall 1957 Olla Podrida ... a symbol of unity and leadership. WENDELL WOODSIDE From Summit, Now Jortoy The American Field Service was organized to bring the countries of the world closer together by the exchange of high school students. A program of this type was long in becoming a success, but this last summer 724 American Students were sent abroad, and an equal number came to this country this fall. Berkeley High School participated in the A.F.S. program this year, bringing two students from abroad and sending three students to Europe. Martha Ellis lived in Finland. Walter Moore lived in Germany, and Peter Green lived in Spain. Our foreign students are Helen Colvin from New Zealand and Luigi Ostellino from Italy. Berkeley High School is only one of many schools participating in the American Field Service program bringing students from twenty countries together to exchange ideas—fulfilling the A.F.S. motto. “Walk together, talk together O' ye people of the earth, for then, and only then shall ye have peace.” BHS EXCHANGE STUDENTS. Justice is the first goal and democracy is the ultimato goal. The court is by the Borkoloy Police Dept, and is in regulation with the Alameda court system. Each judge takes part in tho court for four consecutive times. Each time he or she works up a position. On the fourth time at court he or she is Chief Justice. LEFT TO RIGHT: Calvert Moor . Membership is voluntary, but a primary requisite is an intorost in safety. Meetings are held twice a month. Some activities investigated by the council—are shower room floors refinishod to prevent slipping. designing of instruction cards for air and firo drills, a safoty exhibit, a radio program. I must admit at first things looked very shaky. Starting a semester on the red side of the ledger was only one of the many obstacles that were seemingly in the way of a successful term. But before a month of school had ended, the student body had formed a team which could not be beaten. The sale of student body cards reached a goal never before attempted—2,500. The RIVALRY, the senior play. THE DESK SET. the musical, BABES IN TOYLAND. and the success of this POD, all these were victories achieved by your team. But perhaps the greatest product of this team was the great uplifting of school spirit. Were we glad when our football squad found the winning ways and won the Northen Division ACAL crown and capped it with the great game against Capuchino! But how far would your team have gone without excellent coaches. Special acknowledgment is due Mr. LeTendre, Mr. Moffett. Mrs. Nealson, Mrs. Schwimley, Mr. Lutt and many, many others. There are many, many things which I can not begin to mention. But let me express my thanks to the Board of Control for making your team a cooperative unit, the Daily Jacket for making so many things possible, and let me thank the Associated Students of Berkeley High School for giving me the opportunity to be a member of your team. HONOR SOCIETY Berkeley High School has continually proven itself outstanding academically, and this year we have received nation-wide recognition for our scho'astic standards. Ranked after an extensive survey among the top thirty-eight high schools in the United States, Berkeley High can proudly look back on a very exceptional record. To what may this success be attributed: the facilities? the activity program? the excellent faculty and administration? These, yes, and combined they create an atmosphere for learning where one may receive the opportunity and initiative for scholarship. And too. we may proudly say that this opportunity is open and available to all. Once again Honor Society has completed another successful semester; our scholarships were financed chiefly by our Fun Night concession and hatchecking handled this term by Lenore Uyeyama. Miss Repetto, assisted by Mr. Nelson and Mrs. Ryan, was the sponsor; the officers have been Susan Kjarsgaard, vice-president. Jean Gallagher, secretary-treasurer, and Board Members Mary Anne Stuart and Earl Mayeri, whose suggestions and criticism have been of great assistance. Walt Moore Honor Society President C S F The Berkeley High School Chapter of the California Scholastic Federation has continued to thrive as an active and sound organization. Notwithstanding the ruling passed down by the Attorney General, the CSF had an interesting and pleasant tour of the Standard Oil Refinery per gratis. However, there were no slope concessions. The high-senior Sealbearers were honored at a Berkeley Lions Club luncheon. My sincere thanks to Myron. Carolyn, and our sponsors for their kind and beneficial assistance. SPEAKERS' BUREAU Let us freely hear both sides ' -THOMAS JEFFERSON Our Berkeley High Speakers’ Bureau of more than fifty members has enjoyed an active term of speaking to audiences in school and community. The bureau was represented in the Voice of Democracy contest by Barbara Chandler, Nancy Hack. Barbara Hastings. Susan Hoyt. Bob Gordon, Pete Green and Fred Johansen. First place honors were won by Pete Green. Bob Gordon was a close second. Speakers at American Legion Post No. 7 included Marty Ellis, Doug Jennings and Barbara Hastings. Panel discussions at Berkeley churches included: Is It Right To Fight and Teen-age Problems. School projects advocated by the entire bureau at home rooms, assemblies and classrooms included the sale of student body cards. Pods and tickets for the fund-raising production of The Rivalry, and the United Crusade drive. Berkeley Hi-Lites. a weekly radio program heard over KRE, and sponsored by the bureau, grew in popularity. Chairman BARBARA WHITBY SENIOR FRIENDS This term the Senior Friends have worked with the Girls' Association to fulfill the motto— Friendship and Service. We have helped to orient the new student, acted as proctors the first weeks of school, ushered at several school activities, helped with rallies and assemblies, and have been in the lobby and cafeteria to help the faculty there. We have also had a picnic at Live Oak and a turn about with the Rally Committee. Our concession at Fun Night, a teacher's grab bag, was a great success. My thanks go to Sheryl Stevens, Gail Harnett, and especially Mrs. Ulry. Without their help I wouldn't have been able to manage. Being a Senior Friend has been an honor, a privilege, and an experience I will never forget. RALLY COMMITTEE This term's Rally Committee has been smaller than previous terms due to the size of our class. The lack of quantity has been easily made up by the quality of the fellows on the committee. Without the support of the members, we wouldn't have been as active in school activities, such as football, basketball, rallies, as well as our regular duties on the campus. Recognition is highly due to my assistants. Pete Eubanks. Ed Miller, and Gordon Whitehead for the effort and support displayed. I wish to thank Mr. Nealson for his advice and help as our sponsor, for without it. the semester would not have been such a success. I consider it a great honor and privilege to have served as this semester’s Rally Committee Chairman and it will leave very pleasant memories with me. Many of us have participated in sports, drama, clubs, and governmental activities; some of us have become honor students and a great credit to the name, Berkeley High. The friendships and acquaintances we have made will be precious memories never to be forgotten. The thrill and excitement of becoming a Senior Friend or Rally Boy, the wonderful spirit at the football games, the soft and dreamy music at our Senior Ball, the laughs at the Senior Play, and the sorrow and joy at graduation are but a few of the highlights that have made our senior year a tremendous success. I want to thank the outstanding faculty for their guidance; the Senior Sponsors who put forth their time and effort to help make this term as successful as it has been; to my fellow class officers. Steve. Cynthia, Calvert, and Barbara for their more than generous assistance: and last but not least—I want to thank each member of the class for excellent cooperation in the various activities throughout the term. November 29th the group sang for the annual lighting of Christmas decorations, singing a half-hour program in Constitution Square. December 15th they presented an hour program of sacred music at the University of California Newman Club. December 17th the Choir responded to an invitation from the Berkeley Kiwanis Club, singing a program of Christmas music at the Shattuck Hotel. As this gees to press, plans are being made for the annual A Cappel a Choir dinner which will be held at the beginning of the Christmas holidays. Joseph Gilbert, president MARCHING BAND This year's eighty-piece marching band had a very active and successful term. Under the tremendous leadership of Mr. Lutt, the band participated in many school activities. It marched at most of the football games, played for several rallies and participated in the University of California Band Day. The band also marched in the Annual Football Parade of Lights. One of the highlights of the semester for the band was marching at the Capuchino game. The Drum Major, Chuck Moore, displayed his excellent leadership at all the games. The officers this semester include: Charles Gustav-son, vice president: Fred Jamison, secretary-treasurer: Chuck Moore and Phyllis Cripps. social chairmen. Many thanks to the officers and band members who helped make the band, this semester, a tremendous one. Jack Arnold President ORCHESTRA This fall term has been a very active period for the orchestra. During the first month of the semester we elected our officers. The following are: President, Don Weilerstein: Vice President. Shirley Lobdell: Secretary-Treasurer, Catherine Griller: Social Chairmen, Jackie Steele and George Duff. The orchestra played for both performances of the Senior Play on November I and 2 and for the assemblies of Burbank, Garfield and Willard Junior High Schools. On December I 3 we accompanied the production of Babes in Toyland. The orchestra has worked very hard for all of these concerts but at the same time it has enjoyed every moment of the work. Catherine Griller Secretary-T reasurer DANCE BAND This fall Dance Band began with many new musicians and new material and worked hard to equal standards set in the past. Dance Band increased its activity this term both off and on campus. In tradition, we played for Touchdown —the GA dance, the Talent Assembly, and the United Crusade drive kickoff luncheon. Two innovations were playing for the Junior Red Cross Convention at U.C. and Band Parents' Club meetings. Entertaining at rallies and assemblies completed our activity. Tony Kaye and Charles Gustavson served as band managers. Mr. Robert Lutt is sponsor. Tony Kaye Co-manager etWlUt AEOLIAN CHOIR HARMONEERS The Aeolian Choir, as the Harmoneers, are a new musical performing group at Berkeley High School. Organized in the fall of 1956. they made their off-campus debut in May of 1957 at the northern California Choral Festival where adjudicators rated them as Outstanding’’ both in performance and sight-reading. This fall their principal assignment was participation in the University of California Choral Festival which took place November 16. On this occasion the Aeolian Choir again won for themselves praise and encouragement from the Festival judges. As the Pod goes to press the choir is hoping to be able to accept an invitation for their appearance in a local church on December 15. Jane Pattison, president The Berkeley High School Harmoneers had a very active fall season. The first assignment was an invitation to sing for the Berkeley High student body in an assembly program in October. In November they appeared on Burbank, Willard, and Garfield Junior High School assembly programs. November 16th. with the Aeolian Choir, they took part in the University of California Choral Festival, an all-day program which was concluded with all festival participants attending the University of California-University of Washington football game. November 21st the Harmoneers appeared at Trinity Methodist Church, singing for the Women's Auxiliary. Cleveland Cotton RMCNEERS vr United we stand, divided we fall. -GEORGE POPE MORRIS SPORTS JV FOOTBALL The Berkeley High Junior Varsity of 1957 is a group of boys learning and developing themselves in hope that someday they will have the opportunity to play varsity football. These boys were used most of the time as opposition for Varsity players. Since the Junior Varsity had very little time to work together as a team, it was very difficult to play as a team during game time with other schools. Early rains caused cancellation of the Richmond and Alameda games. This left our team unchallenged as they dropped only one close game to Piedmont, 7-6. After two weeks of hard, grinding practice, the JV's ran over the De Anza Dons, 34-18. The next team to fall before the Jackets was Harry Ells. A fourth-quarter touchdown by Johnny Wright gave Berkeley a 14-12 victory. The last game of the season against El Cerrito was the most impressive of all games. The Jackets downed their cross-town rivals by a crushing score of 34-14. Next term such players as Art Andrews, Sam Brown. Larry Lowell, John Wright, Wayne Keiser, John Batcnan, and Bob Carver will make our varsity a strong contender in the ACAL. TENTH GRADE FOOTBALL This fall the soph football team, coached by Palmer Whitted, was made up of boys who were smaller than is usually the case at BHS. But the team made up in hustle and in desire what it lacked in poundage. Six games were scheduled for the organization; one of these was cancelled due to unseasonal inclement weather and one due to invasion by the Asiatic flu bug in the camp of a scheduled opponent. Though unable to score themselves, our sophs held Piedmont scoreless in tho second half of a contest scheduled between their JV's and ours. At Richmond our tenth graders defeated the home team I 3-6 on a muddy field. On our gridiron, the game with De Anza ended in a scoreless tie. El Cerrito was defeated on our field 32-20 to close the abbreviated season. The names of Bullard, Donnell. Evans, Foord. Froines, Haseltine. Jacobsen, Naka-gawara, Russ, Salo, and others are almost sure to become a part of the glorious lore created by BHS heroes. 80 VARSITY FOOTBALL BEST FOOTBALL TEAM On November 22, 1957, the Berkeley High A.C.A.L. Football Champions astounded the prep world by walloping the previously undefeated favorites of the peninsula, Capuchino High, in an unexpected score of 40-13 to clinch the mythical championship of Northern California. This victory added the icing to the cake in one of the best years in Berkeley Hiqh history. After an overwhelming 30-0 victory over the El Cerrito Gauchos, Berkeley was picked by East Bay prep writers to win the A.C.A.L. With this goal in mind the Berkeley High Jackets, coached by Fred Moffett, downed the Piedmont Highlanders 33-7, won a hard 14-0 bout with Richmond, and then coasted by De Anza 44-19. After shutting out the always tough Alameda Hornets 19-0, the Jackets rolled over Harry Ells 32-7, and then won the A.C.A.L. Championship by once again downing El Cerrito 21 -6. Such standouts as Don Kasso, tne Whittle brothers, John Lynch, Dave Dutton, Fred Tuemmler, Rick Palfin, Leonard Davis, and many others gave Berkeley a football team that will long be remembered in Berkeley High history. WILSON The Berkeley High Cross-Country team of 1957, was another credit to Berkeley High, along with our football team, and our track team. In the first cross-country meet, our team dropped a close one to El Cerrito, but placed second, in front of Pleasant Hill. Coach Erickson and the boys then picked up the pace to run over Harry Ells, De Anza, and Piedmont. At the start of the A.C.A.L. races, Berkeley had a 3-1 record. Cur boys placed second in the A.C.A.L. Meet, and were on their way to the North Coast Division Meet. With superior running by Tom Jennings, Bill Hotchkiss, Jim Bowman, and Gordon Whitehead, Berkeley tied Hayward for first place. Berkeley concluded their fine season by placing second in the North Coast Section Meet, to receive an invitation to the State Cross-Country Meet. No matter what the outcome of the State meet may be, Berkeley produced at least the second best Cross-Country team in Northern California. MR. MOFFETT MR. POWELL MR. SILVA MR. SCOTT MR. HACKER MR. ERICKSON A BASKETBALL B BASKET8ALL INTRAMURAL SPORTS Intramural Sports is one of the most important, as we!l as popular activities of the year. It gives all the boys the opportunity to be a part of a team instead of a spectator. This term, basketball, swimming, badminton, volleyball, tennis, and trampoline were offered to all students. Coach Ray Silva, and Bill Powell sponsored over 150 boys in the Fall 1957 program. The boys, interested in basketball, were divided into squads and competed against each other. The squads took such names as Sweet Wheat’s Men. The Free Lancers. The Waterfront Boys, and the Court Gents. Many boys from these teams are playing on the Varsity. JV, and B Basketball Teams for the Spring semester. In Intramural swimming, and tennis, as well as basketball, the coaches discovered many boys who. someday, may make a name for themselves and Berkeley High School. SWIMMING •LOCK B FIRST ROW. Our first activity was the selling of soft drinks at Fun Nite which was profitable and fun. We then sold pencils which with the support of the Block B members was a sellout. With the profit from our concessions we had many activities, the highlight of which was our annual dinner. I wish to extend my thanks to Chuck Josephs, vice-president; Bill Mallet, secretary-treasurer; and Fred Tuemmler, sergeant-at-arms. Also a special thanks to Mr. Wilson, our sponsor, who gave up many hours of his time to make this term successful. It has been a great honor to serve on the B.O.C. as Block B president and I'm sure I will never forget the knowledge I have learned in serving the Block B members. Steve Havis Block B President It has been a great privilege, as well as a pleasure to serve as president of the Circle B Society. The Circle B Society was a little inactive this term because some of the members were active in Fall sports. Nevertheless, we still managed to raise enough money to present the traditional Emil Lamar Scholarship to one of the graduating Circle B members. Another activity of the society included a Circle B Society-Block B dinner. I would like especially to thank Mr. Silva, our sponsor, for his help and guidance. Those who aided me in officiating over the group were Norman Hara-guchi, vice-president; Carl Mack, secretary-treasurer. Before closing, I again wish to thank those who helped me in the Circle B Society. The Girls' Athletic Association is an after school organization which sponsors sports for girls. It teaches sportsmanship, teamwork, coordination, and skills in many sports. This term we have had tennis, badminton, diving, archery, sinkers, recreational swim, basketball, tumbling, and dance. The dance and diving clubs have been especially active. The dance club has put on many musicals and programs. The term is divided into two 8 week sessions so it will be possible for us to sponsor all of these clubs. Some clubs such as diving, badminton, and dance are continued throught the entire 18 weeks. The legislative body of the G.A.A. is the G.A.A. council. The executive part of the council is made up of our advisor, Mrs. MacClenaghan. President Pam Fox, Vice-President Jill Nealson, Secretary Kathy Stephens, and Treasurer Norma Delgado. The membership is made up of two representatives from each club. The council plans the sport sessions, playdays, Fun Nite concession, Pompon sales, etc. The Berkeley G.A.A. belongs to a girls' interschool organization made up of Berkeley. Oakland Tech, Holy Names, Albany, and Anna Head's. This organization is governed by the Girls' Inter-School Council made up of the president of each G.A.A. and one other representative.
