Year- book adviser Mrs. Sidney Wales is seated at her desk surrounded by a forbidding pile of photographs, envelopes, Jacket copy, and books. She pauses for a moment in her struggle to make order out of chaos and in a tired voice utters the semidesperate question, Are we ever going to get this Pod underway?” However, no answer is forthcoming because the only other persons present are two page editors sleepily identifying pictures. This discouraging scene, although witnessed by any Pod staff is cer- tainly not a typical one. On the contrary, Mrs. Wales’ experienced and able leadership plus the natural desire of the seniors to own a bigger and better Pod” combine to produce a beautiful yearbook. Of course, words and even pictures can never fully take the place of what they represent. Nevertheless, the present staff feels that this Pod does much to strengthen the gap between memory and experience. Look it over carefully and let the pictures and messages help you remember and relive an eventful spring term. It’s an original Pod in many ways. The format as well as the cover are the work of Ronald Lai, a talented member of our class. This book is the final result of many hours of hard work by the entire staff. We certainly hope it meets with your approval. Steve Vaughan Editor IMPRESSIONS All through our lives we makes impressions. We do this whether we want to or not. During the past three years that you, the graduating seniors, have spent at Berkeley High School you have made many im- pressions. The way that you have reacted to the situations that have confronted you at Berkeley High has created an impression on many people. Berkeley High School is represented by groups and individuals who, through the impression these groups and individuals make, reflect upon Berkeley High. The athletic teams, Honor Society, California Scholar- ship Federation, extracurricular clubs and activities all make an excellent impression for Berkeley High. And most certainly the combined efforts of the Music and Drama Departments in producing the Operetta have impressed many people. Other activities and projects such as the Alumni Art Exhibit, the Olla Podrida, and the Jacket make excellent impres- sions also. Yet, on the other hand, reckless driving by Berkeley students makes a wrong kind of impression on the citizens of Berkeley, and people be- gin to think that all Berkeley teenagers are juvenile delinquents. The wrong impression given by a few spoils the reputation of Berkeley High. As you graduating seniors enter into a much bigger world, either through work or college, remember the impression that you will make on people and always try to represent yourself, your school, and your work as excellently as you possibly can. HENRY DORSEY Vice-President u -M u o CHERYL OLSEN Secretary ' DAGMAR GIVANT Treasurer MARY LAWRENCE Head Yell Leader HARRY CHANDLER President As the time for graduation draws near many memories are brought into my mind. Our fine auditorium, musical productions, and athletics have made out- standing marks which will last for years to come. We should all be proud of the facilities and the privileges we receive here at school. Because of these, Berkeley High is ranked among the highest in the nation. This semester has been a great success in many ways. The student body de- serves more credit than can be paid for their work on the Operetta and the Senior Play, both of which were very outstanding. We were well represented at the Northern California Music Festival. The band and orchestra deserve unending praise for their performances at the Festival and here at school. They have certainly increased the prestige of Berkeley High. Athletics again brought us a good name in the world of sports. Our golf, swim, tennis, baseball, and track teams represented us well at all their contests. We have had individual celebrities in our midst as well. They have excelled not only in the fields of music, science, speech, and athletics, but they have also reaped a large share of the available scholarships. Surely they deserve praise for their efforts. Yes, this has been an outstanding term, one that we cannot look back upon without pleasant memories. The presidency has meant much more to me than can be explained on this one page. It has been a big job but an inspirational one. Several times people have come to me and asked whether they should run for an office or not. I urge all of you to run for some office during your school life. The greater the effort that goes into the student government, the greater the benefits will be. A stu- dent body office is an opportunity of a lifetime that we can’t afford to miss. To those of you with whom I am graduating I would like to say that it has been great going through these invaluable years of training and learning. The friendships which have been made here will last as long as we live, I’m sure. To those who stay behind, I would say to make the most of these three short years. They go by all too soon and you, too, will be sorry to leave . . . This semester, fifty-four Senior Friends, a larger number than ever before, have gone on carrying out our motto of Friendship and Service.” Through serving at the Senior Ball last term, doing Cafeteria and Lobby duty, ushering for school functions, entertaining at the Senior Dinner, and most important, helping new girls to feel at home at Berkeley Fiigh, each Senior Friend has made her time count as a real asset to our school, and my sincerest thanks goes to every one of them for a job well done. I would especially like to thank our sponsor, Mrs. Ulry, and my two co- chairmen, Margaret Dickie and Pan Gallick, who have helped a great deal. Serving as Senior Friends’ chairman has been a wonderful experi- ence, and one I will never forget. This term’s Rally Committee was the largest committee the Berkeley High campus has ever had. It has worked hard to live up to the high standards of the past Rally committees. Some of the functions of this committee were to sell cokes at all school dances, keep the Slope in good order, and to help at the track meets. It has been an honor and a privilege to be chairman of this Rally Com- mittee and work with these boys. I would like to thank Mr. Nealson, whose advice and aid were in- valuable. I would also like to thank the assistant chairmen, Rudy John- son, John Watt, and Keith Belgum, who have really been very helpful in making this term so memorable. To the boys on the committee — thanks for your cooperation and best of luck in the future. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE For the outstanding success of all our activities this term I owe a great deal of gratitude to Louise and Susan, who worked tirelessly on all our projects, to Miss Nova Bartlett, whose sug- gestions and help were invaluable, to the diligent efforts of the Hat Checking Committee, and finally, to all the members of the Honor Society. It has been a true inspiration and honor to be president of such a capable and genial group. It is with great sadness that I leave Berkeley High School, for nowhere will I again find such diversity, or the inspiration and beauty thereof. In the student body, every race, religion, and ideal is represented, and in each there are outstanding in- dividuals. Berkeley High School can become a true example of the ideal of American Democracy. I challenge those remaining, and those to come, to seek this goal. Go Well, Tom Engelsing Honor Society President TOM ENGELSING Honor Society President LOUISE DUNLAP SUSAN DUNLAP Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer honor society 18 Members of Honor Society and CSF. With the enthusiastic support of nearly 2 50 members, the BHS chapter of the California Scholarship Federation has com- pleted a very active and productive term. A cause for great joy was financial aid given to our treasury by the BOC helping us to present honorary gold pins to the Sealbearers. For the first time in several terms, a number of our mem- bers represented us at the regional conference at Asilomar on May 5. Two of our other activities were a Coke Date for prospective members and a cake concession. Certainly the term would not have been the success that it was without the spirit and efforts of Dave Grether, vice-presi- dent; Barbara Yates, secretary-treasurer; Mr. Nelson and Miss Repetto, co-sponsors; and Miss Bartlett, our dedicated sponsor. I hope that our CSF will continue to be the strong, living organization it is now. I have had many and varied experiences during my three years here. But, the most wonderful one has been that of serving as your GA president. It has been an experience I shall always remember and value. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the girls who sup- ported and attended our GA functions. Without their cooperation and help, little would have been accomplished. A special vote of thanks goes to the GA officers, Terry, Susan, Jean, and Kathy. Their help and as- sistance were in valuable. We had an active term in the GA. The dance Hayfever” was a won- derful success and a lot of fun. The All Girls Assembly also proved suc- cessful. And, of course, there were the Low Ten Welcome and the Senior Farewell. I thank Kirs. Ulry for her untiring help. Without her encouragement and guiding hand, I and the GA would have been lost. My thanks again for a wonderful term. Good luck to all of you. It was all so different. How would we find all those rooms, and where was that elevator? After that tedious and eventful first week, we began to settle back and enjoy our new life at Berkeley High. We were proud of our newly elected officers who were Harry Chandler, president; Villard Wright, vice-president; Toni Blair, secretary; Cheryl Olsen, treasurer; and Evelyn Buel, social secretary. With these officers to guide us we were off to a good start, and we presented as our concession at Fun Night, a baseball toss. We had no Slope concession this year. HIGH 10: Our spirits were boosted now that we weren’t the lowest creatures in the school any more. Bud Kamb was our president. Our other officers were Bill Peterson, vice-president; Lynn Cathcart, secretary; Dagmar Givant, treasurer; and Cheryl Olsen, social secretary. We were still the biggest class in the school and mighty proud of it. Many of us joined one of the numerous spring sports and earned letters. Again we had no concession. Our dance, Neptune’s Holiday,” was not too successful. We lost 11 cents. LOW 11: Berkeley High was nothing new to us now. Again Harry Chandler was elected president. Henry Chin became vice-president; Ann Dalziel, secretary; Toni Blair, treasurer; and Susan Ide, social secretary. Words and Music” was our Junior Prom. It was one of the most successful dances ever presented at BHS. Our hot dog concession at the football games brought us a lot of much-needed money. At Fun Night this term, we presented a garter toss as our concession. HIGH 11: After a long winter, spring had come at last. But spring fever had not overtaken our active class officers. Pete Herb was our new president, and Bruce Williamson our vice- president. Carol Rose was secretary; with Dagmar Givant, treasurer; and Lynn Cathcart, social secretary. They got us started with a marvelous Junior Prom called Jail break.” We also hauled in the money on our cotton candy sales on the Slope. LOW 12: We finally made it. We were seniors at last. And on the BOC were five of our class- mates helping to run our school government. Harry Chandler was elected vice-president of the student body, Dick Keating was Circle B” president; Pete Herb, Honor Society president; Nancy Loomis, GAA president, and of course, our class president, Bill Vaughn. Our other class officers were Bob McManus as vice-president; Terry Garthwaite, secre- tary; Pete Scott, treasurer; and Emily Buel, social secretary. With all that spirit behind us we were a cinch to win the spirit cup, and we did. Gremlins were our concession on the Slope this term. Graduation was coming closer and closer, and we were looking for- ward to our last half year with great excitement. etiiot senior message PETE HERB President As you all go your separate ways, I hope you look back on this term as the most memorable of your stay at Berkeley High. I am proud to have been a member of this class and prouder to have been able to serve as your president. Thank you jl for your cooperation. Until 0vr paths cross once more, goodbye and good Pete Herb Senior Class President For three years the members of this class have been working together building up to this final triumph, our graduation. Through these times we have shared many hardships and letdowns, but we kept going for- ward. The dances we put on, the rallies we presented, and the Slope sales we backed were examples of our tremendous spirit. Throughout the past three years, we have had good times and have won many friend- ships that we shall always treasure. This final climactic term is one we won’t soon forget — the laughter at Ditch Day, the dreamy Senior Ball, the memories of our Banquet, and finally the sadness and happiness of our graduation itself. All these now turn into moments of the past. 26 ANNETTE AARON Homemaking STELLA ABALOS Spanish MERCEDES ADAMS History Sr. Dinner Planning Comm., Travel Club International Club EDWIN ROSS ADKINS LOUISE ADLER Math, Science HR Rep., GA Rep. In spite of this handicap, we have kept up the high standards of our class. We had tremendous success selling Gremlins for one week, and many class members joined in activities around school. With all the help we were given by our class sponsor, Mr. Copley, the accountants office, and the class repre- sentatives, this low senior term has been one of our most successful. Thank you very much for an experience I shall never forget. Good luck always! Emily Hunt L-12 President L-ll OFFICERS AND CLASS COUNCIL John Chung, President Nancy Hack, Vice-President Barbara Whitby, Secretary Diana Darnall, Treasurer Judy Burton, Social Secretary L-ll Class President’s Message This spring term of ’5 6 has been a successful and memorable one. Our Junior Prom and other class ac- tivities have made this term a big success. It certainly has been a wonderful experience for me to have been able to serve as class president of the low eleven. I want to thank the L-ll Class Council and the class as a whole for the splendid cooperation and support. Special thanks to Mr. Loney, or class sponsor, for his tremendous help and guidance. Good luck and all the success in the world to each and every one of you. With the able support of our many homeroom representatives we accomplished all that we set out to do. Especially gratifying was the cooperation of the low-eleven class in presenting our Junior Prom. Our sponsor, Mr. Waltz, was very helpful in his contribution of print shop time and materials. The term was successful financially, due largely to the spirited volun- teer work. Thanks again for the opportunity to serve as H-ll president. Douglas Ferguson H-ll Class President 57 H-10 OFFICERS AND CLASS COUNCIL Dave Bertoli, President Sandy Waters, Vice-President Mary Higgs, Secretary ' Keith Robinson, Treasurer Jill Nealson, Social Secretary H-10 Class ' President’s Message Now that our first year at BHS has ended, I feel that our sophomore class has had a very interesting year. If we continue for the next two years in the same spirit and cooperation our class will leave BHS with a wonderful record. I would like to thank our sponsor, Mr. Westover, for his help and guidance, our class council for their help in planning activities and our entire class for their assistance in making this a successful semester. Good luck to all of you! Dave Bertoli H-10 Class President 58 59 L-10 OFFICERS AND CLASS COUNCIL Art Johnson, President Lynn Hayworth, Vice -President Ann Singman, Secretary Katherine Takefuji, Treasurer Robin Smith, Social Secretary L-10 Class President’s Message Our first semester at Berkeley High has been a big success. Our class has lots of spirit. It has been a privilege to have been president of the L-10 class and to have had the opportunity to serve on the BOC representing our class. The homeroom representatives of our class have been very helpful in making our first semester successful. I wish to thank them, the class officers, and our sponsor, Mr. Rajander, for helping so much. The band played for the Berkeley All-School Festival, District Music Festi- val at Hayward, assemblies and concerts. A new band administration was formed and band sweaters were introduced this term. The band activities this spring included a very successful picnic at Tilden Park, a ski trip to Dodge Ridge, and a picnic at Searsville. A small wind ensemble called the Little Concert Band” played for noon shows and special concerts and as- semblies. Many thanks go to the officers: Seeley Dole, vice-president; Penny Lorenz, secretary-treasurer; Madeiline Severine, social chairman; Tom Thurman, business manager; and to Mr. Lutt, director. Fred Ervast, President BHS Concert Band Spring 19 56 Activity of the Dance Band has been solely prepar- ing for school dances. The Dance Band also played for the spring Talent Assembly. The Junior Prom, Sopho- more H op, and the Senior Ball were the important dates for this group this spring. Judy Cesena, dancer, and Marilyn Garcia, singer, helped the band perform at all events. The band is sporting new powder blue dinner jackets paid for by dance dates. Mikey Soto, Student Director Mr. Lutt, Sponsor i 84 The Berkeley High Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Haynes, was kept quite busy this term. Many were chosen to play in the Pacific Music Clinic Orchestra at Stockton, and almost everyone was in an ensemble of one type or another for the California Music Festival held in Hayward, May 5. Many school functions were supported by the orchestra’s music — assemblies, the operetta Fortune Teller,” the senior play, and graduation. The officers are David Eakin, president; Marcia Beck, vice-president; Judy Thrasher, secretary-treas- urer; and Helen Winnie, social secretary. Don Weiler- stein is concertmaster and student conductor. David Eakin President The A Cappella Choir made up of over eighty voices and under the direction of Dr. Earl Blakeslee have participated in many different programs this last term. We have performed at such outside organizations as churches, YMCA, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Music Festival at San Mateo and many others. Also included among our many activities was our annual picnic at Stinson Beach. The officers of the choir are as follows: Vice-president, Bill Blythe; secretary, Linda Wyckoff; treasurer, Sandy Read; robes, Mike Manley Lorie Lane, Bill Parker; librarians, Sue Seavey, Barbara Yates, Jacqueline Ranks, and the pianist, Sandra Tay- lor. An ex- tensive intramural program had also been added, under the supervision of Mr. Frank Gross. Stars who deserve mention are Dave Newsom, Jim Warner, and Lloyd Henry in golf, and Jim Ronan, Phil Koenig, Rod Dorse, and Dick Jochums in swimming. The baseball team is predominately seniors with Wright, Blunt, Brudney, Daniels, Leon, and Wilson carrying the load. Conversely sophomores dominate the tennis picture. Mike Far- rell, Bill Hoogs, and Steve Chandler are outstanding here. The track team won the ACAL and NCS championships. The relay team of Allums, DeWitt, Johnson and Dorsey repre- sented Berkeley in the State Meet in Chico, June 2. The majority of the members were engaged in Spring sports and other school activities. However, otir semi- annual Dads’ Night” and our annual Pot-Luck Supper” provided enjoyment for everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our officers: Paul Daniels, vice-president; Ted Davis, secre- tary-treasurer; and Jim Gillen, sergeant-at-arms. Our gratitude also goes to Mr. Wilson, our sponsor, who gave us fine guidance and advice. Last but not least, I would like to thank all the members of the Block B for their help and cooperation. Serving on the Board of Control as the president of this organization does, has been an honor I’ll always remember. CIRCLE B Spring is the most active season for the Circle B. Most of our members were supporting their school in one of the many spring sports, including swimming, tennis, track, baseball, golf, and basketball. Although comparatively smaller in number than the Block B, we were still able to raise enough money for our traditional Emil Lamar scholarship of $5 0. We again sponsored the faculty-varsity baseball game. I would like to thank every Circle B member and especially my co-officers, Larry Hanks, vice-president; Leroy Brown, secretary-treasurer; and Mr. McFarland, our sponsor, for helping to make this term a great success. Jim Huseby Circle B President Dave Brudney President of the Block B Society 91 block b’ and circle BASEBALL SQUAD C« The best all-around team in the Alameda County Athletic League best described this year’s baseball squad. Coach George Wilson had a talented group of boys. After having a t orrid practice season, the Jacket nine took second place in ACAL competition. The pitching staff was the uncertain spot in Coach Wilson’s team, but with the help of Dave Brudney, Ron Allen, Algie Kidd and Ray Salvo, the horsehiders downed some excellent clubs. The booming bats of Villard Wright, Paul Daniels, Art Blunt, Alton Wilson, Dan Talley, Larry Leon, Nathan DiBianca and Johnell Fields provided the needed runs for the second spot place. BOYS’ PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Scott, Mr. Gross, Mr. Wilson, Mr. Hacker, Mr. Silva, Mr. Moffett, Mr. Erickson. 92 VARSITY Harry Chandler, Larry Bar- clay, Henry Dorsey, Bill Vaughn and Den Castain made up Sid Scott’s first string most of the season. Andy Morse, Mike An- derson, Bill White, Forest Am- mons and Jim Eastin also figured prominently in the Varsity pic- ture. Paced by Larry Barclay, who made All-ACAL, the Jack- ets nearly upset the champion El Cerrito squad twice, losing both contests by only four points. The Jacket casabamen had an over-all record of 14 wins and 6 losses. They finished fourth in the ACAL, with 8 wins in 15 games. JV The JVs had a very fine season, winning 10 and losing 4 in league play. This included an upset over the league champion Rich- mond. The JV team consisted of Capt. Ray Buckley, Pappy” Simmons, Bob Wonder, Le Van Patton, Steve Chandler, Mike Sarkela, Dave Alvarez and many others. Recognition should also go to Mr. Ray Silva, as this was his first year as coach of the JV team. He did a very fine job. BEE Although they took third in ACAL competition, the Berkeley Bees had a very fine over-all record of 13 wins and 5 losses. Coached by Elgin Erickson, the Bees won their first 1 1 games in a row. However, they met cham- pion El Cerrito on Friday the thirteenth and lost a heartbreaker by one point. Pete Herb and Pete Scott consistently spark- plugged the Bee offensive. 93 basketball graduating letter men 94 HENRY DORSEY Track, Basketball, Cross-Country HARRY CHANDLER Football, Tennis, Basketball BILL VAUGHN Football, Tennis, Basketball DICK KEATING Track, Basketball, Tennis DON CASTAIN Basketball, Track JIM EASTIN Basketball, Track PETE HERB Basketball, Tennis VILLARD WRIGHT Football, Baseball DAVE BRUDNEY Baseball ED CROUCH Track PAUL DANIELS Football TED DAVIS Football PHIL KOENIG Swimming LARRY LEON Baseball RICH SWANK Swimming AL KIDD Baseball JIM WARREN Football ALTON WILSON Baseball GARY SODERLUND Football JIM PARSONS Football JOHN WARNER Golf JIM GILLEN Football LEROY BROWN Swimming bob McKinney Basketball JIM HUSEBY Swimming TOM HORI Swimming GREG ZOOK Swimming BOB HARMS Track STEVE VAUGHAN Swimming BOB BAKER Track PETE SCOTT Basketball ALLEN UNSWORTH Track FORREST AMMONS Basketball BILL WHITE Basketball MIKE ANDERSON Basketball GEORGE DEALEY Basketball ELWAYNE ANDRADE Basketball Manager BARNO HORDO Swim and Track Manager JOHN MARTIN Football Manager GARY GOODENOUGFI Track Manager 95 graduating lettermen VARSITY TRACK This year Berkeley had one of its best track teams in many years. Paced by Cebron Russ, Fred De- Witt, Henry Dorsey, Rudy Johnson, and Ed Crouch, the Jacket Thinclads won all the ACAL meets except one. At the start of the season the track team went to the Martinez Relays and re- turned with three new relay records. These were the 440 (32.2), the 880 (129.5), and the mile (3.24) . At the end of the season Berkeley won the ACAL and North Coast championships. One of the high points of the season was the meet with Richmond. Although not favored to win, the Jackets upset the Oilers in one of the most exciting meets of the year. Rudy Jackson, the star sprinter from Richmond, won the 100 yard dash. However in the 220, Fred DeWitt edged him by half a step. The time was a tremendous 21.5, breaking a school record which had stood since 1927. As this Pod goes to press, five members of the team are at Chico, participating in the State meet. If they all do their best times, Berkeley has a chance to capture the State title. BEE TRACK The Berkeley High B’s coached by Rich Hacker, have really poured on the steam in ACAL compe- tition. Jackie Williams, and Dan Hooper were the outstanding stars. In the meet with Richmond, Williams ran the 3 30 in 3 6.9, which is really only one-tenth of a second away from the school record. Dan Hooper also holds the record for the 660. Others who have helped the team are Honson Lim, Allen Unsworth, Harvie Holmes, J. Moultrie, Harvie Miller and Jim Bowman. In the ACAL meet Williams was first in the 15 0. Later he also won this race in the NC Division with a record time of 15.1. (Cad jllQsi Aw-, Q ■ 96 VARSITY SWIMMING With several excellent individual stars picking up most of the points, Berkeley High paddled itself right into the thick of the ACAL picture. A highlight of the early season was the meet with Hayward. Although the mermen lost, the meet was not decided until the last race. By the end of April Berkeley High had a 9 won, 6 lost record. This fine record was the result of the expert coaching the boys had from Coaches Frank Gross and Ray Silva. Both of them have worked long and hard to shape the team into one of the finest ever. Main point getters for the team were Jim Ronan in the 200 free style, Phil Koenig in the diving, Rich Jochums in the 1 5 0-yard individual medley, Dave Alvarez in the 100-yard backstroke, and Tom Mar- tinsen and Rod Dorse in the 100-yard free style. The future should be very bright as many of these boys are sophs and juniors. BEE SWIMMING At midseason, the Bee swimmers had fared a little better than their big Varsity brothers. The Bees had a record of five wins out of six meets. They should do even better as they gain experience. Next year many of the present B’s will be on the Varsity team. The most consistent point getters for the junior mermen were Pete Eubanks, Rich Wayland and Jim Webb. Although there are always some stars on every team, there are many boys who also add their talents. Some of the other boys who provide the depth are Wayland and Murari in the 5 0-yard free style; Ulsh, Walsh, and Zemsky in the 100- yard breast; Webb and Salsbury in the 50-yard back stroke; Wayland and Dawson in the 100-yard free style, and Brown in the diving. Others on the team are Tanaka, Vish, Tsukamoto, and Vaughan. 97 swimming This season the Golf team was third in ACAL competition. The squad, coached by Elgin Erick- son, did not lose a regular season match. They ended third in the finals. They beat teams like San Lor- enzo, El Cerrito and Alameda. The Golf team was lead by Dave Newsome and Lloyd Henry, who had very fine records all year. Others who added their excellent talents to the squad were Mike Staley, Craig Hoyt, Paul Shalmy Dave Barnett and Dave Mathews. This year the Berkeley Tennis team had one of the strongest squads in years. They finished in first place, winning their tenth championship in 12 years. Five sophomores — Mike Farrell, Steve Chan- dler, Bill Hoogs, Jim McManus and Tony Pruce were individual stars. The doubles were made up by Tierry Konig, Normal Breslow, Bog Gardiner and Bill Demster. Mike Farrell, the number one player, won the North Coast championship at Stanford. i! J TRAMPOLINE BASKETBALL This term Mr. Gross had another fine group of boys out for intramural sports. Intramural sports is one of the most im- portant parts of the sports picture at Berkeley High. It gives the boys who don’t excel in any one sport and who still like to participate, a terrific chance to play with teams of about the same size and ability. Basketball, tennis, and trampoline made up the spring intramural sport schedule. To the great surprise of all, there were many who turned out this spring, especially for basketball. There are ten teams in basketball, with about six boys on a team. The ten squads are divided into two leagues, the A and B. The other sports of tennis and tram- poline also had a very good turnout. Those who have only a small knowledge of tennis and trampoline had a very good chance to come out, learn and enjoy themselves. TENNIS TT 99 intramural GAA COUNCIL FIRST ROW, left to right: Lor- raine Makishima, Barbara Freed, Pam Fox, Sara Henderson, Linda Larsen, Connie Hays, Ann Hol- lock, Susan Kjarsgaard. The GAA is the organization which encourages participation in organized sports by all girls in Berkeley High. Membership in the association is open to everyone through participation in one or more of the sports clubs. JThe past term was divided into two sports sessions. In the first session the active clubs vjere Badminton, Tennis, Swim, Sinkers and Dance. In the second half activity was cen- tered in the Softball, Tennis, Dance, Lifesaving and Recreational Swim clubs. The activities of the GAA are governed by the council and the GAA officers. The Council consists of last term’s officers and two representatives from each club. The officers this term were Sara Henderson, vice-president; Pam Fox, secretary; and Connie Hays, treasurer. sjf . . In addition to the weekly or semiweekly sports program of the clubs, the association activities included a playday to which all Berkeley High girls were invited, a picnic for GAA members and the dinner at the end of the term for the council and for the installa- tion of the new officers. % The GAA enjoyed another wonderful term thanks to our sponsor, Miss Barrow, who generously gave her time and effort, and thanks also to all the council members and others who devoted many hours towards the success of the GAA program.
