Today and Tomorrow We of the staff of the Spring 1955 Olla Podrida present our version of the school yearbook. In covering the many phases of school life, we have come to realize that Berkeley High is a composite picture of the broader life for which we have been preparing. We have learned to accept competition as a natural and vital part of our way of living. Through our clubs and organizations, we have had the opportunity of developing our special interests. Our work in the class rooms and the shops is the necessary stepping stone to learning the business of living. Here in the student life at Berkeley High today, as in the greater world of tomorrow, there is room for everyone who will make a place for himself. —Dave White, Olla Podrida Editor. Does it not seem but yesterday that you were entering kindergarten or the first grade? Have not the last twelve years gone more quickly than you had anticipated? In a few more days the tomorrows of four hundred fifty-one seniors will begin. Your years here at Berkeley have helped prepare you for situations you will meet in later life. With the aid of your teachers you have studied valuable trades, business courses, and college preparatory subjects, all necessary in obtaining the job of your choice or in entering the college of your choice. Your success in high school will determine in no small degree how successful you will be throughout your lifetime. Such organizations as the Board of Control, the school paper, and the yearbook bring to mind the practice of freedoms of election, speech, and the press, practices which will form your attitudes toward the American way of life after graduation. The future seniors following in your footsteps, and especially the future Boards of Control, must reach for high goals in order to achieve the ideals set for them by this and other classes at BHS. As you walk through the halls of our school for the last time, keep one thing in mind—whatever you do in life, do it well; you may never have another chance. For us of the high twelve class, it is the last term, the climax of our three high school years. As you thumb through these pages, you will no doubt remember all the many phases of school life that have been recorded here—student government, the vocations, the clubs, the sports, and the many other school activities. These fond memories will grow in the future years. It was a tremendous job to produce this term's Pod. Fortunately, the difficulties of the sales campaign have not been reflected in its quality. This staff has worked hard and long to give you what I feel is more than equal to the many Pods of the past. It was through the tireless efforts of the art and sales staffs that we were able to reach our sales quota. The ad staff should be commended for the large volume of advertising, totaling over $1100. We thank our advertisers for their sympathetic co-operation and good will. I am sure you will join me in expressing sincere appreciation for the work done by Mrs. Sidney Wales, who was definitely the deciding factor in the success of the Pod. Year after year she makes it possible to put out a fine yearbook. And so. we have preserved tradition. It remains for you to continue this tradition and keep the Olla Podrida a vital part of school life at Berkeley High. Thank you. Dave White. Mitt White, FACULTY SPRING 55 GOVERNMENT 808 MATTHEW ASBHS PrMldMrt BOARD OF CONTROL As I look back on the activities of the term, I can't help but feel proud of the student body and the way in which it has entered with active interest into all of them. Spring sports have always needed the support you gave them and the operetta and senior play became school-wide activities because of your participation and attendance. Although I don't know the winner as I write this, I feel certain that all the classes have gained from the addition of the Spirit Cup to our trophies. The American Field Service sponsored foreign car show was a cause which deserved and received your support. Along with the rest of the BOC. I have been privileged enough to help make this term a success. I wish to thank the members of the board for their fine work this term; it has been wonderful working with them. As this term comes to a close, it ends three years at BHS for me as well as for the other members of the senior class. I shall always remember the pleasure I had working for you, the students of BHS. Not only will this term's activities stand out in our minds, but we hope the tremendous record of successes—in every field—will stand as an incentive to future classes. Our class has the greatest number of Special Privilege Sealbearers in the history of Berkeley High. Our class ran the most successful booth on the slope. Our rally was proclaimed the best in a great many years. Very few classes have equalled our Senior Play performances, either dramatically or financially. All of the class spirit which was necessary for these achievements was certainly shown in our Spirit Cup standing. In addition to the marvelous records in academic courses, sales, and spirit which are left on paper, there are countless experiences and memories that won't go down as statistics but which will be treasured by each of us always—the beach parties at Carmel, the sunburn from Searsville. the screaming crowd at our football games, the dreamy music of our Senior Ball, the laughter and sadness of our Banquet, and finally the thrill of graduation. I believe that this year has satisfied all of our dreams of what a senior year should be. Since our prosperity and happiness during this year are the result of so much work by so many. I would like to thank the members of the faculty and the members of the student body who helped our class and each and every member of the class for making this year the success it certainly has been. This term has been full of activities for everyone, and the Girls' Association has tried to add its part by carrying out its motto, Friendship and Service. All the activities we planned were a success only because of the wonderful support which was given them, and I would like to thank each girl personally for her wonderful enthusiasm. The highlight of the term was our dance. Spring Fever. Girls sponsored it, girls asked the boys, and girls supported it. The dance really did create a fever and was a fine send-off for spring. The bids were symbolically composed of wire springs and thermometers. The rest of the term was well filled out with such activities as a reception for new girls and a Senior Farewell. This semester the Borkoley High School chapter of the California Scholarship Federation has increased the number of activities it sponsors as an organization. A picnic including swimming, games and a barbecue supper, was held at tho Rod and Gun Club for all Sealbearers. The CSF this term olso planned a noon show to raise money for a scholarship. The traditional CSF Coke Date was held and a large number of prospective members enjoyed the refreshments and entertainment. The advice and assistance of our sponsor, Miss Nova Bartlett, has been invaluable, and Honry Chin, vice-president, and Elizabeth Hayes, secretary-treasurer, havo been of great help. I hopo that CSF will continue to grow, not only in membership but also in its influence in the school. Sponsor ARTS mm BAND This spring the Band has worked more on concert than marching, having played in the Washington-Lincoln Assembly, the same program repeated for American Veterans; Music Assembly, and the Northern Division of the State Music Festival. As the Pod went to press, plans were being made to have the Band play for graduation. Some marching was done, however. Weekly drills were held, along with Training Band, and the marching band performed at the dedication of the new Public Health Building, and for the Junior Traffic Revue. Officers included Manuel Lavrador. President; Dan Koenig, Vice-President; Penny Lorenz. Secretary-Treasurer; and Madeleine Severine, Social Secretary. DANCE BAND The past semester has been the busiest and most successful one yet for Dance Band. Appearances included the Sophomore Hop. BOC Dance, Fool's Frolic, two talent assemblies, Dance Band Assembly, and the operetta Trilogy for presentations to the public and to the Music Educators' National Conference. This has been the largest and most experienced band so far. A great deal of credit for its success should go to its student leader, Jim Farnsworth. More than half of its members will graduate this June, which means a big rebuilding will be needed. We feel justly proud to be members of this fine group. A CAPPELLA Tlie activities of the A Cappelle Choir this semester were numerous. We began with the operetta, gave a performance at the Kiwanis' Club, and traveled to San Jose for the state music festival. Our annual picnic was enjoyed by all. We ended the year by singing for the graduation ceremony. A vote of thanks and sincere gratitude to Miss Margaret Cartwright, for without her fine leadership the past term would not have been a success. My personal thanks to the officers. Bruce Rogers. ORCHESTRA The Orchestra this semester is the largest in the school's history, numbering 65. It has had a very busy semester playing in the operetta. Music Assembly, and the State Festival at San Jose. Orchestra’s part in the operetta Trilogy was quite important, and this year the operetta was given once for the school, once for the California Western Division at the Music Educators’ National Conference, for which Berkeley High School was host. CHARLIE FIELDS. Block B” President. SMALL B SOCIETY The Small “B Society has been fairly inactive this semester because most of its members are participating in spring sports. We nave had our usual activities which included the Faculty-Varsity baseball game, and our semiannual picnic. We gave the Emil Lamar scholarship which is awarded to a graduating member of the Small B every semester. I would like to extend my thanks to my co-officers and sponsors: Richard Lee. SPRING SPORTS As another term draws to a close, all five spring sports—baseball, track, swimming, tennis and golf—have shown great strength in ACAL competition. The season has proved to be very successful for the Yellowjackets. although B Track won the only ACAL championship. Congratulations are in order for the coaches who have done a tremendous job in producing such good teams. These groups show the enthusiasm and spirit produced by truly fine coaching. Coach George Wilson took a group of green boys and made a respectable, hard playing ball club out of them. It was a building season in most sports. Mike Lepawsky in swimming, Gary Wood in track and Harry Chandler and Bill Vaughn in tennis, were outstanding stars. ROY WATLEY. Sports Editor. BASEBALL Early in the season, the Yellowjacket nine surprised everyone by taking two consecutive wins over favored Richmond and San Lorenzo to hoist themselves into the ACAL lead. In the league opener against Richmond, the Jackets followed the relief pitching of Dave Brudney to a 4-2 win. Brudney probably saved the day for the locals when he entered the fourth inning with bags loaded and only one out. He fanned two consecutive batters to retire the side. In the battle, right fielder Carl Smith and center fielder Villard Wright collected two hits each, while Paul Daniels, short, Larry Leon, second, and Charlie Fields, catcher, each provided one hit. Second bagger Larry Leon proved to be valuable in practice performances. His average of .373 was second only to returning letterman Fields’ .461. The horsehiders followed their triumph over Richmond with an overwhelming 14-5 victory over San Lorenzo. GOLF TENNIS For the first time in ten years, it was inevitable from the start of the season that Berkeley would not be the first in the ACAL. In mid-April, the BHS netters dropped their second contest of the season to Piedmont. Piedmont worked hard for that victory. 4-3. The end of the season found Berkeley in second place behind victorious Piedmont. The BHS doubles team of Harry Chandler and Bill Vaughn made the semifinals in the North Coast. GOLF At the beginning of the season it appeared that the golf team would be an almost sure bet for first place in ACAL competition. The team's strong point was its great depth. Many of the other teams had outstanding individual stars, but lacked the winners needed in the lower flights. In the first ACAL match, the Berkeleyans came in second, a bare two points behind Richmond. The unprecedented midseason loss of three players because of ineligibility, resulted in sixth place in the ACAL. TENNIS ► I VARSITY TRACK Boasting what is probably the strongest Berkeley Track squad in several years, Coach Rich Hacker was very optimistic about the chances of the thinclads this year. In early season competition, the Jackets lost to one league opponent only. That was El Cerrito. Winning the 120-yard high hurdles and the 180-yard low hurdles with amazing consistency this year, Berkeley took fourth place in the ACAL. Gary Wood placed in the 880 in the North Coast. The relay team qualified and went to the State Meet. BEE TRACK The Berkeley Bees, coached by Rich Hacker, have poured on the steam in ACAL competition. At midseason eight records had fallen, as the team triumphed over practically all comers. New records set include 75 yd. dash: :07.9 and 150 yd. dash. :15 by Henry Allums: 330, :37.9 by Dick Keating: 660, 3:25 by Kurtz: 120 yd. low hurdles. : 13.7 by Ed Wiley: 70 yd. high hurdles. :09.l and broad jump. 20 ft. 8 in. by Cebron Russ and the pole vault. 10 ft. 6 in. set by Ed Krouch. The Bees were first in the ACAL. and first in the North Coast. This group was outstanding. 89 VARSITY SWIMMING All the Berkeley Swim meets constitute practice to show each team what it will be up against in the ACAL trials and finals. This year Coach Frank Gross has made winners out of two new boys. Dave Alvarez often took victories in the 100 backstroke, and Jim Ronan dominated the 200 free style event in many of the meets. Versatile Mike lepawsky consistently racked up points in the 100 free style, the 100 breast and the individual medley. Rich Swank was often out in front in the 50-free. The team ended the season in second place behind Hayward. Mike Lepawsky placed in the North Coast in the individual medley. BEE SWIMMING At midseason, the Bee Swimmers had fared a little better than their big Varsity brothers. They had dropped four out of eleven contests. One of these was against Hayward, usually unbeatable in ACAL competition. One was with Tamalpais, one of the top Northern California teams. Coach Frank Gross stated that what is probably the strongest department in this group is the backstroke, where Huseby, Vaughan, Brown and Smith provide plenty of depth. He also cited the performance of free stylers Martinson and Burnham, breast strokers Hanks and Kamb. and Peter Eubanks (medley) as valuable point getters. The Bees came out in third place in the ACAL, behind Hayward and Richmond. BASKETBALL VARSITY Thi season, the Yellowjaclcet Varsity team turned in a very commendable performance by ending in the top division of the ACAL. In the Gridley Invitational Tournament (won by the Jackets last year), Berkeley was defeated by Richmond to take second place. Forwards Bob Nemecheck. Russ Fuller and Jerry Hecht; guards Charlie Fields and Bob Boldt: and center Bill Hayes saw most of the season action. Toward the end of the season. Jim Camell bo-gan to find the range, and in the Grid-ley tournament, he turned in a startling performance. JV Although they were forced to accept third place in ACAL competition through dofeats by Richmond and El Cerrito, the Berkeley JV's turnod in somo good performances during the yoar. Larry Barclay was almost always high point man and is undoubtedly the most promising man for Coach Sid Scott’s toam next year. Ably supporting Barclay were other future Varsity prospects: Henry Oorsey. Dick Carlson. Art Blunt. Andy Morse, and Ed Roach. The Junior Varsity finished the season strong with wins over Alameda and Piedmont. BEE BASKETBALL In their last contest of the season tho Borkeley Bee’s crowned their ACAL campaign with the startling feat of scoring 76 points against an unfortunate Piedmont five. The finals put BHS in third place in over-all league play. Most notable was the performance of Sam Viviano who took 23 points in the high scoring contest.
