Foreword Within these pages of your Olla Podrida are recorded the events and activities which have shaped the pattern of life here at BHS for the past six months. We have tried to capture in words and photos every aspect of our high school life. It is a record that will bring back many happy memories in the years to come. Although the Fall '54 class is small, we are proud to report our Pod is big, with more pages and pictures than any of our predecessors. This is due to a determined sales and advertising staff and a hard working Pod staff. Mo doubt this effort will be topped in the future, for records are made to be broken. Words cannot express our feeling of gratitude toward Mrs. Sidney Wales, our faculty advisor. Therefore, you can see the success of this book is due to Seniors, lowerclassmen, and faculty, who have cooperated and worked side by side, and have thus defined the two words, school spirit. My thanks to a great and able staff. It has been a privilege to be your editor. Bill Hartman, Editor, Olla Podrida. BILL HARTMAN 5

J. ELWIN LoTENDRE Principal’s Message Dear High Seniors: From the time the stork brought you, through childhood, school, and finally graduation, you have been acquiring knowledge—not only reading, writing, arithmetic, and experience, but something more, the American Way of Life. Life is something like a merry-go-round. It is an enjoyable experience, but you do not progress anywhere; you just go round and round. In your three years at Berkeley High you have had the fun of riding along with your class and have learned to accept the ups and downs. It is very easy to ride around and let others do all the work for you, but you do not accomplish anything. You must hop off and advance under your own power. You, the graduating class, have accomplished a great deal at Berkeley High. You stand as an example of democracy in action. Freedom of election is shown in the execution of the student government by the leaders you have elected. The great variety of religions and races represented in your class expresses another freedom. The culmination of the efforts of your class to work and progress together was shown in the success of the senior play and in the amount of money your class treasury accumulated to help finance senior activities. Many of you were members of committees, participated in sports, joined school clubs, and had the opportunity to make your individual contributions. No class ever achieved greatness because of one person. No country achieves greatness by the efforts of a few people. As you walk across the slope for the last time, stop; think about the life which faces you after graduation. Remember all you have experienced here. The American Way of Life has been good to you- -to me—to us. Let us not take for granted that it will continue without each of us making his contribution and fighting for its permanency. Sincerely, your principal, I. Elwin LeTendre. 4
