B E H K E LE Y H BerkelSy 1 G H Cotl Horn s c i a H O O L J. ELWIN LoTENDRE Principal’s Message Dear High Seniors: From the time the stork brought you, through childhood, school, and finally graduation, you have been acquiring knowledge—not only reading, writing, arithmetic, and experience, but something more, the American Way of Life. Life is something like a merry-go-round. It is an enjoyable experience, but you do not progress anywhere; you just go round and round. In your three years at Berkeley High you have had the fun of riding along with your class and have learned to accept the ups and downs. It is very easy to ride around and let others do all the work for you, but you do not accomplish anything. You must hop off and advance under your own power. You, the graduating class, have accomplished a great deal at Berkeley High. You stand as an example of democracy in action. Freedom of election is shown in the execution of the student government by the leaders you have elected. The great variety of religions and races represented in your class expresses another freedom. The culmination of the efforts of your class to work and progress together was shown in the success of the senior play and in the amount of money your class treasury accumulated to help finance senior activities. Many of you were members of committees, participated in sports, joined school clubs, and had the opportunity to make your individual contributions. No class ever achieved greatness because of one person. No country achieves greatness by the efforts of a few people. As you walk across the slope for the last time, stop; think about the life which faces you after graduation. Remember all you have experienced here. The American Way of Life has been good to you- -to me—to us. Let us not take for granted that it will continue without each of us making his contribution and fighting for its permanency. Sincerely, your principal, I. Elwin LeTendre. 4 Foreword Within these pages of your Olla Podrida are recorded the events and activities which have shaped the pattern of life here at BHS for the past six months. We have tried to capture in words and photos every aspect of our high school life. It is a record that will bring back many happy memories in the years to come. Although the Fall '54 class is small, we are proud to report our Pod is big, with more pages and pictures than any of our predecessors. This is due to a determined sales and advertising staff and a hard working Pod staff. Mo doubt this effort will be topped in the future, for records are made to be broken. Words cannot express our feeling of gratitude toward Mrs. Sidney Wales, our faculty advisor. Therefore, you can see the success of this book is due to Seniors, lowerclassmen, and faculty, who have cooperated and worked side by side, and have thus defined the two words, school spirit. My thanks to a great and able staff. It has been a privilege to be your editor. Bill Hartman, Editor, Olla Podrida. BILL HARTMAN 5 FACULTY Mr. Akoy, Min Alsop. Miss Altona. Miss Andorson, Mr. Auch. I have learned that the success of a school is dependent upon the individual support of every student. No few individuals, no one faculty member can be as valuable to the school as the combined effort of you, the student body. I would like especially to thank the students and the faculty whose school day did not end at 3:00 o'clock, but who could be found working on various activities: sports, music, and drama late into the afternoon and even at night. You are the ones to whom Berkeley High is truly indebted. The results of the student body's energy and enthusiasm was clearly seen throughout this last semester. Perhaps most gratifying was the abundant new talent discovered and presented. Our football team received good support and, although we didn't take first place in the league, we still beat Piedmont. Class activities were numerous and successful. It was a pleasure to see the number of awards and the recognition given at the Awards Assembly to outstanding students in every phase of school life. Yes, Berkeley High is a great school and BOC feels an especial pride in the part they have played in it. A small bit of the school rubs off on every graduate and is carried with pride to every part of the world. To these graduates, I say, You are lucky to have attended Berkeley High. To all students and future seniors, I say, Keep Berkeley on top. Keep it one of the finest schools in the U.S. In closing, I again thank you all, students and faculty, who helped to make Berkeley High what it is. These three years have been filled with the wonderful friendships and accomplishments that our class can truly be proud of. Needless for me to say, our class has been one of the most successful ever to go through Berkeley High. This success is a great tradition for us to carry on. As you look back over these last three years, you recall the Soph Hop, the Junior Prom, the Senior Play and all the other terrific examples of spirit, cooperation, and success that have become the bywords of our class. Now as we leave high school and seek different careers, the priceless fundamentals of honesty, uprightness, and integrity that we have learned these last three years will insure the attainment of these careers. Our sincere thanks is given to every person who helped make our days here successful and worthwhile. The thrill I have gotten from being your senior class president is something I'll never forget. Gremlin sales on the slope and at the football games were a great success through the efforts of those who sold them and the students who bought them. Members of the Low Senior Class took an increasing interest in outside activities. But this interest is only the halfway mark. Next term will find us participating actively as only high seniors can. I enjoyed being the Low-12 President. My thanks go to my officers, our sponsor, Mr. Vivrette, and the many members of our class who made this term a success. I am sure that if this term is any indication, next term will find ours to be one of the best classes ever to graduate from BHS. I wish to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to those who have helped to make this term a profitable one. It was only through the efforts and cooperation of the members of the class that te Junior Prom, pop-corn week, and our Fun Night booths were so tremendous. Words and Music, the Junior Prom, will be remembered as a gala evening of fun. The success of the Prom was due to the efforts of all the hard-working dance committees. This high junior class has met each activity with a profound enthusiasm which exemplifies the spirit of each and every member of the class. Thanks again and the best of luck for the coming semester. My thanks go to each and every one of you for your support of hot dog sales. Fun Night and the greatest Junior Prom ever put on. Our Beard of Directors has had two main objectives this term, both of which have been fulfilled —(1) to promote the aggrandizement of the Honor Society and (2) drive a roaring trade in scholarships for the benefit of our graduating members. This year we have read to the blind students, helped students who have fallen behind in their work, held a picnic at Tildon Park on October 22. and have gone with the CSF to the United States Mint. Our best speakers have Given talks to the tenth grade home rooms, explaining Honor Society membership rea.uire-ments. Our thanks go to Mrs. Sidney Wales and the entire Jacket Staff and to the radio program. Berkeley High Hi-Lights, for aid in publicity. To bring in money for scholarships, we have sold Yellow-jacket Decals. Droduced a noontime show on January 5. sold candy on the slope from November 8 through November 12. run a very successful booth at Fun Night, and have held the Hat Checking Concession at the Berkeley Community Theater. A great deal of commendation is due to our other officers. Philip Spross, Natalie Hudson, Marcia Lightbody. and Marion Conn, and to our Hat Check Chairman, Joy Cox, and to Francos Gaidos and Toni Blair, who have given tireless service in all fields of money making. Very little could have been done without our assiduous sponsor. Miss Nora Bartlett, and her cooperative assistants. Miss Arlene Repetto and Mr. Edwin Braun. And last, but far from least, I thank you, the Honor Society, for making this term the success it certainly has been and for bestowing upon me the honor 1 shall never forget. Bill Stricklin, Honor Society President. Honor Society MARJORIE LINDSAY President CSF California Scholarship Federation The purpose of the California Scholarship Federation is to foster a high standard of scholarship and general attainment on the part of students of the secondary schools. Serving as president of this organization and trying to fulfill this purpose have been two of the most enjoyable and interesting experiences of my life. This term the CSF was larger than it had ever been before. The members have shared in the planning and finally in the pleasure which was obtained from three main activities. First there was the picnic sponsored by the Honor Society, then the field trip to the San Francisco Mint, and finally the CSF coke date v hich was held for the L-10's who received A's and B's the second report card period. I can find no words to sufficiently express my deepest gratitude to Frances Gaidos, our vice-president; Tom Engelsing, our secretary-treasurer; Mr. Braun and Miss Repetto. our co-sponsors; and most of all to Miss Bartlett, our sponsor. The duties and responsibilities of the committee were to keep order and neatness in the cafeteria, direct traffic in the halls, and keep the slope clean. Our activities for the term included selling soft drinks at the dances, which goes toward our yearly dinner, and ushering at football games. I have enjoyed very much representing this committee at the Board of Control meetings. This being my last term at BHS, I would like to express my personal thanks to Mr. Nealson for the guidance he has given me this term, also I would like to thank my assistants, Bill Hartman, Gerald Luthan, and Frank Thomas for their cooperation, and finally I thank the boys who gave their willing help to make our days here successful and worthwhile. Senior Friends The red and gold caps of the Senior Friends are a familiar sign of friendship at Berkeley High School. Being on call at any time, for any occasion, the Senior Friends strive to live up to their name. This term our activities have been extensive and varied. Included were ushering at the Senior Play, serving at the PTA Dinner, and most important of all—personally contacting all the new girls to help them find activities, classes and friends. All these events have contributed in making this, our last term, so happy and successful. At this time, I want to thank all twenty-four wonderful girls, teachers and our sponsor, Mrs. Ulry, for the help you have given toward making our v ork so successful. Varsity Football As another grid season came to an end, the Berkeley High School Yellow-jackets found themselves knocked down to the runner-up spot for the first time in three years by an Alameda powerhouse who went on to win the ACAL title. After losing the first game of the season to a championship bound Vallejo eleven, 41-0, the green Yellowjackets with only five returning lettermen, sprang back to defeat Santa Rosa, 32-0, and tie Mt. Diablo, 12-12. Starting out the ACAL season with the annual Big Game with Piedmont, o fired-up group of Yellowjackets upset a favcred unbeaten Piedmont team, 13-12, before more than 8000 screaming rooters. The Moffett machine then followed with a hard-fought 20-7 win over the Hayward Farmers. Then the roof fell in on the Jackets as they were upended by Richmond, 34-13. This game was followed by the disastrous 25-6 less to Alameda. The Jackets then edged out San Lorenzo, 13-12, and ended the season with a 20-0 triumph over El Cerrito. Leading the Jackets to a runner-up spot in the final ACAL standings were center Bob Sibilia and halfbacks Ed Kelly and Bob Ross. Andre Regers, Sports Editor. 74 J. V. Football Won two, lost two and tied one was the story of the Junior Varsity's football season. Starting the season in grand style the Junior Jackets smashed Albany. 32-0, and then followed through with a thorough pasting of Hayward, 31-0. According to coach Sid Scott, ineligibility of their key players contributed greatly to their next two losses to Richmond, 12-7, and Alameda. 31-7. In what turned out to be their last game of the season because of the cancellation of the El Cer-r.to game, the JV's tied a game with the San Lorenzo team, 13-13. Starring for the Jayvees were Bob Harvey and Henry Allums. Tenth Grade Football Having one of their best teams in several years, the Berkeley 10th grade football team notched wins over Alameda, San Lorenzo and El Cerrito while losing to Richmond, the Piedmont JV's. and tying Hayward. The 3-2-1 record does not fully show the strength of the sophs, as most of their stars were playing varsity ball and so were available for part-time duty only. Some of the standouts who should help the Varsity next year are Seborn Russ, Ben Lusk, and Curtis Marshall. 0 Vallejo .......41 32 Santa Rosa .... 0 12 Mt. Then we had a GAA Hi! Day, and Sports Clubs signups. Tennis, dance, swimming, sinkers, badminton, basketball, and recreational sports were the many clubs offered. Speedaway and tumbling were introduced in recreational sports. The Dance Club gave a wonderful performance for the Teachers' Institute and the Varieties. My compliments to Mrs. Sparks and the girls for an excellent job well done. Towards the end of the sports sessions, we had a booth at Fun Night, a Sports Day with another school, and our Annual Dinner. I would like to extend my thanks to all the members on the council, and to all of you who have helped and made the GAA a great success. Also to my officers: Liz Lowe, vice-president; Doreen Krueckel and Makiko Shinoda, secretaries; Sandy Read treasurer; and especially to Mrs. McClenaghan, our faculty sponsor, for all your help in making my term a great success. Our seventy members played at all but one football game, and at all rallies. Under the direction of Mr. Haynes the band helped increase school spirit with their playing and special halftime shows. They also played for the Varieties on December 10. Jean Brewer, Secretary-T reasurer. Dance Band This year's dance band, composed of many new players and instruments, has truly been the best ever. Keeping us busy have been many assemblies, the Junior Prom, and the Varieties. With Jim Farnsworth assisting Mr. Haynes' leadership, the band has gained a greater knowledge and become quite professional sounding. Members of the band are Jim Farnsworth, Ed Stone, Bill Lampi, Elaine Blum, Lee Mayer, Dick Adams, Wayne Smith, Leonard San Juan, Martha Weatherholt, Bob Zurfluh, Ed Glass, Maggie Long, Joe Moir, Micky Soto, Marilyn Garcia, and Phil Bisbiglia. We v ould like to thank the student body for its wonderful response to our dance band. Elaine Blum, Secretary. Orchestra This Pod marks another of the many success ful semesters of the BHS orchestra. Its many activities include Varieties, graduation and several assemblies. We elected the following as officers for last term: Jim Farnsworth, president; Elaine Blum, vice-president; Barbara Ascher, secretary-treasurer; and Marcia Beck, social chairman. Our first big event was the Varieties, in which the orchestra was greatly appreciated. The orchestra has 52 members and we never run out of room for more people with talent. We certainly hope to see a lot more of you in orchestra next term. Barbara Ascher, Secretary-Treasurer A Cappella With the cooperation of our eighty-two members under the splendid direction of Miss Margaret Cartwright, this term's A Cappella is one of the best. A Cappella's activities began with the traditional initiation and ended with the graduation program. I have enjoyed working with A Cappella this past term and I would like to thank the following officers for their support: Grant Artist, vice-president; Donna Larnach, secretary; Tony Bent, treasurer; Sharon Lee McFarland, Deborah Por-ritt, Frank Granata, librarians; and Sheila Dougherty, Bruce Rogers and Fred Self, robes.
