Olla Podrida SPRING 1953 OLLA PC BERKELEY E BERKELEY, DRIDA fWi IGH SCHOOL CALIFORNIA PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear High Seniors: Now that your formal schooling has almost come to an end, I trust that you will look back with fond memories upon the friendships which you have made, the social life that you have enjoyed, and the education which you have received. This high school education is really the preliminary to a broader education and experience which you will soon begin to explore. Research has shown that learning never ceases in the mind of the man who is willing to try. When Justice Oliver Holmes was 91 years of age, he was noticed one day reading a book on Socrates, which was written in Greek. A friend of his passing by said, Good morning, Mr. Holmes, why would a man of your age be reading Socrates in Greek? Well, replied Justice Holmes somewhat indignantly, I have to read to improve my mind. This example, set by one of our most outstanding jurists, could well be the motto for all of you. Continue doing good things, reading good things, and promoting good things. You will find that you will live a long and happv life by the development of the learning process. With best wishes for a happy future. Sincerely, J. ELWIN LeTENDRE, Principal. t FOREWORD This year's Pod is not vastly different from those of past years. But it will serve well to point out the laughs and thrills of high school life during the past six months. To this we have added our own artistic touch. There is something in this book besides photographs and art work. There is the spirit of the class. The high senior class— 457 strong. On their entrance three years ago, they were nothing but a scared group of Low 10's, the butt of the upperclass joking and sarcasm. On their graduation in a few days, they will have made a high mark in all scholastic and extracurricular activities offered in our school. Now it is time for us to leave. As graduating seniors we have only one request: that the lowerclassmen keep alive the spirit and tradition of our campus, which we for the past three years have endeavored to promote and strengthen. Finally I would like to give recognition and thanks to Dave Gregg and Priscilla Keays who did a terrific job in directing and putting over sales. Without the help of my able assistants Mike McGinley and Dave Knoll, the rest of the sales staff, and the hard working Pod staff, this book might not be in your hands today. How can I thank you, for your fine support and cooperation? Since the beginning of the term, you have supported our athletic teams with fine spirit and with the best attendance Berkeley High has ever had. The success of the activities is due to your cooperation and improved spirit. You have made this term a memorable one for yourselves. We started this term with certain aims in mind: to improve school spirit, boost attendance at spring sports, to have more school activities, and all in all to make this term an enjoyable one for all. Members of the BOC have given their entire efforts to fulfill these aims and to bring you a most enjoyable and successful term, which will live in your memories and ours. If we have helped to improve, or to show improvements that can be continued to better our school, we feel we have done our job. So good luck, good-bye, and keep up the good work and the standards of this best of all schools—Berkeley High. GEORGE KATAYAMA. SENIORS BILL CUNNINGHAM President BILL BOSAK VicoPreiidont MARTHA HENDERSON Tr a ur«r JOYCE RICHARDSON Secretary KATHY HANSEN Social Secretary H-12 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Behind every success is training and preparation. For many years, with the tireless guidance of our teachers we have, as a group, trained and prepared for the eventful day . . . our graduation. We have, in a sense, lived together, studied together, played together, all essential in preparing us for future responsibilities. Our class spirit has been unusually high, and as a result our class activities successful. Memories of these years will remain with us forever. The training of these years will have tremendous impact on our individual futures. Now as we leave high school and seek new achievements, we will set new goals. For some of us it will be further schooling, business, trade, or military service; for others the cherished profession of homemaking. Irrespective of our individual plans, our years at Berkeley High have, in addition to our scholastic attainments, endowed us with the priceless fundamentals of honesty, uprightness, integrity, that permit us to face any future task with fear-free confidence. I wish each of you success and happiness. BILL CUNNINGHAM, H-12 Class President. L-12 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The time has come again to take another step up the ladder of education. We have come up step by step and are finally in a position to reach for the controlling hand in our school. We’ve showed our stuff and are ready to take this hand with the assurance of nothing but success. I would like to express my appreciation for being able to work with such a swell class. This is an experience that shall be remembered dearly in the years to come. Thanks to each and every one of you for your cooperation and support. Good luck and all the success in the world to you. BOB NICOLAYSEN, L-12 Class President. H-ll PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE To the viewers of the Pod who look at the H-l 1 class, to me, to most of Berkeley High, the H-l 1 class is the most industrious class to enter BHS. If you don't believe it, I'll give you a couple of examples. The H-l 1 class, with its many ideas and hard workers put together in May, 1952, the first and most successful Soph Hop in the history of BHS. Look at the sports roster and the honor roll and see which class has the most names. The members of this great class if you continue your prosperity in school activities, you just can't lose in the future. Best of luck always from your class president. EARL ROBINSON, H-l 1 Class President. LOW ELEVEN CLASS COUNCIL Gordon Benner, president; Bill Hartman, vice-president; Jayne Cross, secretary; Hay Kechely, treasurer; Kay Perry. social secretary. L-ll PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The end of the semester is upon us and, amid great rejoicing, I would like to thank those people who helped make our low junior year more interesting— our sponsors, Mr. Calhoun, Mrs. Chiswell and Mr. Fiedler for their help and guidance, our class council and home room representatives, whose work in class activities is greatly appreciated, and especially the class itself, for the wonderful spirit and cooperation which they showed throughout the semester. H-10 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Throughout the spring term of 1953. the H-10 class has been terrific. We were tops in Pod sales, and the Sophomore Hop was the year's social sensation. I can only thank the class for the great work they did. Without them, such success would have been impossible. Thanks also to the class sponsors, who have given so generously of their time, and thanks to the other class officers who worked so well. I can only be grateful for this wonderful opportunity. I will never forget it. Thank you, and good luck. WARREN OLNEY, H-10 Class President. L-10 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE First of all, I would like to say thanks to all who helped to make this a very enjoyable term. Although this was our first term at Berkeley High we have proved that we are a very spirited class, as our Sophomore Hop was a success. I only hope that this is just the beginning of our great showing as a class because I am really looking forward to seeing this great effort that our class will put forth in order to become one of the best classes to have attended Berkeley High. This term has been a very successful one for all of us because of the cooperation from each and every one of the students in the L-10. Again I would like to extend my thanks to you. SANDY KAYA, L-10 Class President. VOCATIONAL AUTO SHOP MECHANICAL DRAWING GENERAL SHOP PRINT SHOP OFFICE PRACTICE 50 ORGANIZATIONS GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION MARILYN PACE President Now is the chance for which I've been waiting. A chance to thank personally every girl in this school for supporting the Girls' Association with such wonderful enthusiasm. All of the activities we planned were a success only because every one of you really got behind them. Undoubtedly our special feature of the term was the Jinx Jamboree. Although it came on the unluckiest day of the year, Friday the thirteenth, we were fortunate enough to have the dance a complete sellout. Those of you who were brave enough to venture forth to the social hall on this jinxed night, saw the place transformed with black cats, ladders, broken mirrors and horseshoes. The rest of the term was well filled out with such activities as a special Girls' Assembly, a reception for all new girls, a Sons' and Daughters' Dinner, and a Senior Farewell. I shall not try and thank my officers, Gloria, Blanche, Jane and Sue, or our sponsor, Miss Kinell, for no words could express how grateful I am for all their wonderful help. Let me speak for both them and myself in saying thank you for a truly unforgettable term. MARILYN PAGE, Girls' Association President. The Bureau provided speakers for sales promotion of student body cards, Pod” tickets and operetta tickets. It sent Red Cross speakers to PTA meetings in the Berkeley schools. Students participating were: Joan Brice, Sally Calkins, Walt Eichner, Ted Erickson, Sara Mayfield, Arnold McKinney, Rosemary Pigford, Carol Russo, Lorella Standley and Helen Varney. In a radio discussion panel held over station KLX, Oakland, the Speakers' Bureau was represented by Pat Crane, Cornelia Bottom, Lorella Standley, Walt Eichner, Arnold McKinney and Don Morrison. Speakers for the monthly American Legion meetings were: Ted Erickson, Elizabeth Tillman and Gloria Gapasin. In the annual Spring oratorical contests, the Speakers' Bureau achieved notable success. Elizabeth Tillman and Ted Erickson took part in the American Legion contest, and Elizabeth placed second. The Lions Club contest had as its subject: Man's Search For Security. Gloria Gapasin, Sonya Hamburg and Althea Sims were chosen to represent BHS. Sonya Hamburg took first place in the local contest and Althea Sims was chosen to represent West Berkeley. The Knights of Pythias contest found Joan Brice and James Robinson as the bureau speakers. Joan Brice took second place for the district. The subject was: Highway Safety. In the Native Sons of the Golden West contest, Lorella Stand-ley represented the high school. RICHARD EHLERS, Sponsor. 54 SENIOR FRIENDS Wearing their red and gold caps, the Senior Friends have given their friendship and service to the girls of BHS. One of our main efforts was to help personally in acquainting the new girls with the campus and ways of BHS. Our term has been filled with activities. We have ushered for last fall's graduation, our own Senior Play, Once in a Lifetime, the operetta, Ruddigore, and for several other events at the Community Theater. Several of the girls helped with the Red Cross drive. We enjoyed serving at the PTA dinner, selling programs and passing out ballots at the El Cerrito basketball game, and taking cafeteria duty at noon. Citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and friendliness were qualities for which the twenty-five Senior Friends were chosen. We all feel it was an honor and a privilege to have been chosen, and we have tried to maintain the fine reputation of the girls who have served before us. We have all had a tremendous high-senior year as Senior Friends. Our sincere thanks go to our helpful and encouraging sponsor. Miss Helen Kinell. And many thanks for the friendship and cooperation of all the girls on my committee. PRISCILLA KEAYS, Senior Friend Chairman. FRONT ROW, left to right: Ann Bankoflor. The CSF Coke Date was held March 12, at which time the L-10's eligible for CSF were entertained. Some of the CSF members attended the convention held May 2 at Gilroy. On May 13, the Honor Society joined with the CSF to hold a picnic at Tilden Regional Park. The Honor Society also sponsored some noontime shows. JIM LAWSON, President. HONOR SOCIETY This semester the Honor Society, composed of 250 members, has participated in many activities. Our biggest project was raising money for our annual scholarships and we began the semester by selling the colorful Yellowjacket Decals. In March our noontime show, Trial by Moonlight, was presented, and the Hat Checking Committee, headed by Liz Drucker and Ann Iximbert, was very active throughout the term. The highlight of the semester came in May with our semi-annual outing held jointly with the CSF at Tilden Park, which proved to be one of the most successful activities of the term. I would like to express my thanks to Mr. Daoust, our sponsor, and to the other officers, Susan Talbot, Shirley Williams, Jean McCarter and Emily Hatfield, without whose wonderful help and cooperation this term would not have been so successful. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have worked with such an outstanding group of students, and I hope that the Honor Society will continue to be one of the finest student organizations at Berkeley High School. Jerry, after seeing the first talking picture, decides that the three of them must go to Hollywood at once and cash in on this new idea. May decided to open a voice school. In Hollywood they meet the big producer Glogauer. The music school is not a great success, and they are just about to be kicked out when George insults Glogauer. Glogauer, never having been spoken to in this manner before, decides George is a genius and makes him manager over everything. George manages by sheer stupidity to blunder into the position of dictator of the new industry. All the members had an active part in the dance. We ended the term by having our annual spring dinner late in the semester. Being Block B President has been the greatest thrill of my life. I wish to thank my officers who contributed to the dance so well, Vice-president Paul Violich, Secretary Nat Brazill, Treasurer Craig Williamson, Sergeant-at-Arms George Fields, and our sponsor, Mr. George Wilson. EDISON GRIFFIN, Block B President. CIRCLE “B” First of all, I would like to thank my fellow members of the Circle B Society and our sponsor, Mr. McFarland, for making this semester a very successful one. Here are some of the activities of the Circle B . The Circle B Society this term is giving a fifty-dollar scholarship, entitled Emel Lamar Memorial Scholarship, to some graduating Circle ''B'' member. We are also giving trophies to the most outstanding class B participants on the track, swimming and basketball team. Nathaniel Brazil will receive the basketball award. This semester the Circle B raised their money by selling ice cream at the basketball games. The Circle B has a membership of sixty-five. The Society has a representative on the Board of Control. We also have a semiannual dinner each semester. ROBERT L. CHEW, President. 74 SPRING PORTS TARS Alan Matsumoto. Tennis. Gil Davit. Manuel Garcia. Walt Watty. Baseball. BASEBALL This season Baseball Coach George Wilson's main goal is to rebuild a strong and experienced team for the coming two years. Coach Wilson was confronted with only five returning lettermen up from last year's squad. They are Walt Watty, Earl Robinson, Gil Davis, Ben Walker and Manual Garcia. The seniors on the team who will not return next year are Carl Gordon, Arnold McKinney, William Johnson, Ron Merritt, Manuel Garcia, Ron Lundgren, Chester Hancock, Bob Van Heuit and Watty. Boys who will be back next year and show promise are Walker. Robinson, Les Miller, Lou Gorham, Rccci Giordano and Ed Kelly. In the practice season, the Jackets faced teams from San Leandro, the Cal Frosh, Mission, Fremont, Oakland High, Castlemont and McClymonds. Standouts in the practice games were Robinson, Watty and Walker, doing the hitting, while Giordano and Garcia were the pitching standouts. Rocci Giordcno did the best hurling job of the pre-season games, as he pitched a two-hitter in Berkeley's 5 to 1 win over Fremont. SPRING SPORTS Each Spring Berkeley is represented in five sports. They are baseball, track, swimming, golf, and tennis. In each of these sports Berkeley is considered a constant threat. This season Baseball Coach George Wilson is concentrating on rebuilding a team for the next two years. The track team is under the direction of their new coach. Rich Hacker, who is doing an outstanding job developing his material into a strong team. The Yellowjackets and Hayward are always the threats in the ACAL swimming competition. This year Coach Frank Gross is depending largely on seniors Tom Burton, Paul Violich and Jim Lawson. Coach Elgin Erickson of the golf team stated that he will be in close competition with Alameda for the league crown. He is depending largely on returning seniors John Anderson and Craig Williamson. Th’s season, tennis is Berkeley's greatest success. The team ended the first round of ACAL competition without losing a match, winning all contests 7 to 0. 76 VARSITY BASKETBALL Playing in a red-hot Alameda County league this year, the Berkeley Yellowjackets dropped two close games to Alameda and finished the season in second place with a 9-3 league record, while meshing 570 points to their opponents 498 in league play. Paced by big center George Fields, and hustling forward Charlie Munn, the Jackets scored 18 wins as against only five losses in overall play to place among the top teams of Northern California. J.V. BASKETBALL Finishing the season strongly, the J.V.'s also ended up in second place with a league record of 8 wins and 4 losses, while scoring 514 points to their opponents' 392. Because of a mediocre practice schedule, the Junior Jackets managed to account for only 12 wins as against 9 losses over the entire season. Led by forward Jerry Tolmie, the J.V.'s will make a strong addition to next year's varsity squad. B BASKETBALL Losing only to a terrific Richmond five, the Berkeley ''B''s made the best showing among the Berkeley High teams with an 8-2 record, to finish second, while they had the tremendous score of 23 wins with only three losses for the whole season. The veteran first string composed of Maynard Thomas, Phil Givant, John Wagner, Rocci Giordani and Nat Brazill, registered a total of 503 points in ten league games while their opponents scored only 373. TENNIS Led by veteran Alan Matsumoto, the Yellow-jacket net squad went through an impressive first round of ACAL net play, winning twenty-eight matches in a row. Aided by returning lettermen A1 Chandler and Bruce Jackson, Coach Jack Eadie's well-rounded team approached the second round with its ninth consecutive league title within easy reach. The Jackets, boasting one of their strongest racket squads, have even better prospects for next year, with 1953 regulars Chandler, Tom Huen, Mike Herb, Tom McManus and Paul Fitzgibbons returning. GOLF This year's golf club looked great for taking the ACAL crown until the illness of John Anderson made it impossible for him to play, stated Coach Elgin Erickson, but maybe John will play later in the season. This year's linkmen are composed of veterans of last year's team except for Bob Jaffa and Dave Knapp. The returning lettermen are Steve Shad-lich, Bill O'Neil, Mike Floyd and Craig Williamson. Mr. Erickson related that the championship will be a toss-up between Berkeley, Alameda and Richmond, with Alameda the stronger team, and with hopes of Berkeley ending up in second place. 78 VARSITY TRACK Starting the '53 season off with a pair of wins, the cindermen, under the tutelage of Coach Rich Hacker, showed their plans for the year. First to fall to the Jackets were Oakland Tech and San Leandro. Placing third in the El Cerrito Relays, the Jackets displayed strength in the shuttle and mile relays. Expected to place high in the ACAL were Edison Griffin, low hurdles; Russ Hill, high hurdles; Charlie Munn, broad jump and high Jump; Bill Gill, sprints; and Don Shields and Louis Lasarte in the middle distance. This year's team had plenty of depth which helped to win many meets, with Bill Baker, Robin Linnett, Jerry Van Buskirk, Ed Miller, Steve Castle and Johnny Merchant as steady placers. B TRACK The talented Bee track team showed their power and depth by waxing Tech in the first meet this year, 76-37. After this, the lightweights placed a strong 440 relay team in the El Cerrito Relays. The Bees were paced by such strong men as Gordon Nordby, who shows much promise in the hurdles, Carl Dewitt and Grant Artist, who battled out the dashes in every meet, Fritz Stem, 660, and Jun Makishima, discus. The 440 relay team was the high spot of the Bee aggregation. The talented foursome was composed of Dewitt, Artist, Dick Bertoli and Mike Garvin. These boys improved throughout the season and were sure point-getters. 79 VARSITY SWIMMING The Berkeley High swimming team had their hopes for regaining their ACAL swim championship narrowed to a slim gleam at the time this book went to press. Despite fine performances from free stylers Tom Burton and Tom Myles, individual medley man Paul Violich, and diver Jim Lawson, the Jacket mermen dropped contests to arch rivals Hayward, Tamalpais, and perennially strong Sequoia. Burton bettered his ACAL 200 free style record by more than six seconds, and along with Myles in the sprints and Lawson's high board efforts, was expected to place high in North Coast competition. B” SWIMMING The Berkeley Bees, although paced by a fine sprint relay team and featuring some good individual performers, had trouble at the start of the 1953 season. With Howie Storm leading the way in the diving and George Nakano in the free style sprints, the Bees looked forward to the ACAL meet with some hope. The 4x50 free style relay team of Giles McHenry, John Miller, Skip Rhodes, and Dave Hadden was excellent and was expected to place high in league competition. These boys will furnish the nucleus for future varsity teams and many of them show real promise. 80 LEADERS CROUP FRONT ROW. Uft to right: Rosemary Plglord. Five girls attended the High School Sports Day at Cal on March 21 and had a grand time. The GAA played hostess to the annual Five School Playday on May 7. The schools included in this affair were Albany, El Cerrito, California School for the Deaf, Richmond and Berkeley High. The girls enjoyed an afternoon of fun. The Dance Club, thanks to Mrs. Sparks, did its part in making Ruddigore a success. The Swim Club, under the direction of Mrs. Bean, presented a swimming demonstration. This term has really been great and I wish to express my sincerest thanks and appreciation to Mrs. McClenghan, our faculty advisor; Sumi Shinoda, vice-president; Pat Turk and Nancy Bryce, secretaries; Jackie Brown, treasurer, and to the members of the council without whose help and co-operation this year could not have been successful.
