THEN NOW and ELWIN LE TENDRE Principal Fifty years ago the Pod came out with a colored cover page. ln looking through the 1900 Pod, I was interested to note that all boys came to school wearing suits, including vests. l also note that the boys seldom, it ever, walked around the grounds without Wearing their hats. The boys wore the high linen collars: once in a while they were made ot celluloid, because they were easier to clean. You could rent a full dress suit tor 52.50, and you could buy a tailored suit ot clothes tor 952000. A good pair ot shoes cost 53.50, and with each pair you bought, 20 tree shines were given. The girls were dressed in the usual style with long dresses, swing skirts, and blouses. Girls wore their hair-do's high on their heads. Most members ot the track team parted their hair in the middle, and the toot- ball team was a short, stocky, rugged-looking group. The tootball game at Napa that year was interesting because there were many horses and buggies parked on the side lines, and every time the ball was punted it scared the horses. This added to the enjoyment ot the crowd. Although there were 83 members in the graduating class, it was decided not to put student pictures in the Pod. Ads were inserted instead. This made a cheaper and thicker book. i 1' Sl- 1' 1' Things have changed, and as one looks through this book today, one would probably say, My, how old-fashioned and out-oi-date they were in l900I Be careful, however, of your criticism ot the oldtimers. ln the year 2,000, YOU will be one of the oldtimers, and when they look through your Pod, the 1950 book ot today, can you imagine what they will say! TIME MARCHES ON! Elwin LeTendre, Principal.

MM PETE WALKER Editor Olla Podrida It is hard for us, who have been on this earth a mere eighteen years, to visua- lize the immense growth of our Alma Mater in the last fifty years. ln 1900 Berkeley High School was but one small building surrounded by dirt roads and pastures. Look around you today. Now we have a magnificent campus complete with modern Science and Vocational building, Academic building, Biedenbach Field, Gymnasium with swimming pools, Memorial Court, and now the gigantic new two and one-half million dollar Auditorium. The high school site and the whole of Berkeley have changed tremendously. Modern conveniences of every de- scription are at every hand. Our teachers and parents have seen many of these changes, but for us it is hard to visualize a world without present-day facilities. This year's Pod is, we hope, not only a lasting memory of three memorable years at high school, but also a documentary of these huge changes. We of the Pod staff believe you will find this progress both startling and interesting. Many of us will see the close of this century. If at that time the people of the world can show as much progress in the second half of the century as has been accom- plished in the first we are sure the earth will be a most wonderful place on which to live. lf peace can be obtained, if many of the horrible diseases can be con- quered, and if all peoples may become equal freedom-sharing partners, then it will truly be a most fruitful half century. To this hope we dedicate this Olla Podrida of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty. Pete Walker. THEN NCVV
