N L ,,,,,,,, , ,Y ,W , J B E RK ELEY HIGH SCHOOL RI D A SPRING 1950 THEN NOW and ELWIN LE TENDRE Principal Fifty years ago the Pod came out with a colored cover page. ln looking through the 1900 Pod, I was interested to note that all boys came to school wearing suits, including vests. l also note that the boys seldom, it ever, walked around the grounds without Wearing their hats. The boys wore the high linen collars: once in a while they were made ot celluloid, because they were easier to clean. You could rent a full dress suit tor 52.50, and you could buy a tailored suit ot clothes tor 952000. A good pair ot shoes cost 53.50, and with each pair you bought, 20 tree shines were given. The girls were dressed in the usual style with long dresses, swing skirts, and blouses. Girls wore their hair-do's high on their heads. Most members ot the track team parted their hair in the middle, and the toot- ball team was a short, stocky, rugged-looking group. The tootball game at Napa that year was interesting because there were many horses and buggies parked on the side lines, and every time the ball was punted it scared the horses. This added to the enjoyment ot the crowd. Although there were 83 members in the graduating class, it was decided not to put student pictures in the Pod. Ads were inserted instead. This made a cheaper and thicker book. i 1' Sl- 1' 1' Things have changed, and as one looks through this book today, one would probably say, My, how old-fashioned and out-oi-date they were in l900I Be careful, however, of your criticism ot the oldtimers. ln the year 2,000, YOU will be one of the oldtimers, and when they look through your Pod, the 1950 book ot today, can you imagine what they will say! TIME MARCHES ON! Elwin LeTendre, Principal. MM PETE WALKER Editor Olla Podrida It is hard for us, who have been on this earth a mere eighteen years, to visua- lize the immense growth of our Alma Mater in the last fifty years. ln 1900 Berkeley High School was but one small building surrounded by dirt roads and pastures. Look around you today. Now we have a magnificent campus complete with modern Science and Vocational building, Academic building, Biedenbach Field, Gymnasium with swimming pools, Memorial Court, and now the gigantic new two and one-half million dollar Auditorium. The high school site and the whole of Berkeley have changed tremendously. Modern conveniences of every de- scription are at every hand. Our teachers and parents have seen many of these changes, but for us it is hard to visualize a world without present-day facilities. This year's Pod is, we hope, not only a lasting memory of three memorable years at high school, but also a documentary of these huge changes. We of the Pod staff believe you will find this progress both startling and interesting. Many of us will see the close of this century. If at that time the people of the world can show as much progress in the second half of the century as has been accom- plished in the first we are sure the earth will be a most wonderful place on which to live. lf peace can be obtained, if many of the horrible diseases can be con- quered, and if all peoples may become equal freedom-sharing partners, then it will truly be a most fruitful half century. To this hope we dedicate this Olla Podrida of Nineteen Hundred and Fifty. Pete Walker. WT NANCY ROBINSON FHAN RUSSELL DORIS HITCH President Vice-President Secretary B. I. ROSCOE RUTH HUTCHINSON Treasurer Social Secretary GIRLS' ASSOCIATION The activities of the Girls' Association for the Spring term of l95O were pat- terned upon our motto Friendship and Service. The traditional Welcoming Party for the low ten girls and the new girls began the term with an activity listed under Friendship Other activities also listed under Friendship were the Cinderella and Prince Charming Ball, the G.A. Assembly, and the Senior Farewell. Under Service, the Girls' Association carried on a successful drive to collect dresses for the Needlework Guild to distribute to the needy children of our community. Each home room donated a dress to this project. Without the enthusiasm and cooperation of the girls at Berkeley High these activities would never have been successful. Throughout the entire term the girls were eager and willing to help whenever asked. When needed you were ready to serve on committees, to give entertainment, to make bids, or to decorate for the various affairs, and you always came through with a job well done. lt has been the greatest pleasure and privilege to have served you this term, and along with the help, interest and cooperation of my hard-working fellow officers, Fran, Doris, B. I., Ruthie, and Hannah, l've enjoyed planning and carry- ing out my responsibilities to you. Miss Kinell has been one hundred per cent cooperative and we greatly ap- preciate her spirit and guidance. Goodbye, girls! l'll always treasure the honor you bestowed upon me. lt's been a wonderful six months. Very sincerely, Nancy Robinson, Girls' Association President. G. A. SENIOR FRIENDS The Spring Term of l95U Will long be remembered by the twenty girls on the Senior Friends Committee. The name Senior Friends has been a standard we have tried during our last semester to uphold. Our activities have been varied throughout the term. We ushered at the last graduation and our own Senior Play. The main responsibility of the committee is to help the new girls find friends and enter into school activities. We also supervise the cafeteria during lunch periods. Among our other activities were serv- ing at the GLA. reception and at the P.-TA. dinner, collecting Red Cross donations at the assemblies. Our booth at Fun Night was a high success and last, but not least, ushering at the opening of the new audi- torium was our crowning achievement. My thanks to our sponsor, Miss Helen Kinell, and the wonderful girls on the committee for all their coopera- tion and enthusiasm. lt has been a privilege and honor to serve as chairman of this committee. The Berkeley High School chapter should be proud of its record in making the C.S.l:'. motto, Scholarship for Service, a reality this term. The activities of the chapter have been varied in nature, ranging from tours through various local industries to hat checking at the Little Theatre and coach- ing handicapped students. This term our membership is made up of 152 students who exemplify the highest academic records in the school. These students can be found participat- ing not only in C.S.F. activities but also found taking active part in school gov- ernment, athletics, music and drama. To the members of my Executive Board and to Mr. Flanders, the faculty sponsor, I must give my thanks for the time and energy they have given this semester. lt has been a privilege Working with you this term and I know C.S.l:'. will continue to grow in the future years. Our engagements included a musical program for the annual Red Cross Drive and Pod, another band concert with Burbank, Garfield, and Wil- lard. Next we journeyed to San lose where we got an A rating, then we played at a Iunior Traffic Parade and finally ended up playing at a band concert at Tilden Park. Our band has worked hard and l know we performed well, even though we didn't look well with our old l928 capes and caps. However, in the future we hope that the school will equip us with some new uniforms We shall appreci- ate it. Bernie Scapparo, President. Yosh Katsura, Sec.-Treasurer. Peter Raynolds, V.-President. Margy Liechti, Librarian. ORCHESTRA The B.H.S. orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Earl Morton, is composed of 45 members. lt is open to anyone who plays a musical instru- ment well. This semester the orchestra combined with the other musical organizations of the school to put on the operetta, The Fortune Teller, for the opening of the new auditorium. They also con- tributed outstanding performances at the senior play and graduation. Next semester the orchestra, along with the band, hopes to move into its new practice facili- ties in the rear of the new auditorium. Frank Patty, President. Nathalie Snow, Secretary. A CAPPELLA CHCIR This spring term the A Cappella Choir instituted a new tradition-a formal initiation tor the new members. This initiation will take place at the beginning of every term from now on. The choir is made up of 80 mixed voices, under the direc- tion ot Miss Margaret Cartwright. The spring l95O activities ot A Cappella included a pro- gram tor Public Schools Week, appearances in church services, and a program for a Kiwanis luncheon. The choir's activities will terminate with a part in the program of the tirst graduation in the new auditorium. The big social event ot the term tor the A Cappella was the picnic and swimming party held in the latter part of May. 1 'Z T 6 3 V in gg Q x.-ii ' -'Wil T J, J! fha' ' 2 64' 1 1 t W t 'Ill -Uk -ttf? l if I' 11 2 i S i E E , E E x afhlefics X AWB N. r i W so BLCCK B CIRCLE B Because all ot the Block B members helped so enthusiastically, our dance, the Shamrock Shuffle, was a complete sell-out. The proceeds from the dance finances the annual Block B banquet held every spring. We have gained members through basketball and as this picture was taken early we hope to extend our membership even turther with the coming awards given for spring sports. As I look back over this term I feel extremely fortunate to have had such able co-workers as Bob Albo, vice-president, Bill Rogin, treasurer: Frank Alessandro, secretary: Wally lackson, sergeant-atormsp and Mr. Nealson, the sponsor ot the Block Roger Gartland, Block B President. The old adage Good things come in little packages holds true to the Circle B Society. Although comparatively smaller than their brothers in the Block the members have made up in spirit what they lacked in stature. All hands joined to make our booth at Fun Night a success, and our annual picnic-dinner was fun as well as appetizing. Through the spring sports-basketball, track, and swimming-we have acquired a consider- able number of new members. The term has been successful because of the interest shown by all members, new and old, and especially my officers: Frank Patty, vice- president, Bill Needham, treasurer, and Ken Hoh, secretary. l give them, and Mr. lack Mcljarland, our sponsor, who was always present with wise and helpful advice, my whole-hearted thanks. Eneree Malone, Captain. BASEBALL In a team that was termed by observers as a good pitch, no hit, the Berkeley High Yellowjacket baseball team opened drills this spring with the firm determination of bettering last year's season mark which found the Iackets occupying the cellar of the Alameda County Athletic League. On paper the lackets had all the indications needed to give them a good year. ln the pitching staff Coach George Wilson had back a Veteran crew. Led by Frank Alessandro, Who is one of the best prospects this school or region has seen in many a moon. Captain Eneree Malone and curve baller Benny Vasquez rounded out the experienced hands. Bill Rogin and Mary Haaland back up the start- ers as the firemen, The pitchers would be handled by vet Bob Albo and the promising sophomore, Bill Fogliati. Louie Richardson and Ed McDonald were back at first, as Was Butch Storm at second. Smooth fielding Don Martin completed the keystone combina- tion and either Vasquez or Malone at third, depending on Who's pitching. The outfield would be capably guarded by Dave Torres, Don Musto, Bernie Scapparo, Emmet Neal and Buss Blythe. By Way of comparison with other teams, Berkeley rated right at the top along with Richmond and El Cerrito. BASKETBALL VARSITY Last Winter Berkeley High was represented by an erratic basketball squad. The cagers had a successful practice season, in which they whipped all San Francisco foes, and gave the Cal Frosh one of their best games of the season. In A.C.A.L. competition the basketballers tin- ished about even, but, however, were rather erratic, beating the second place team and then losing to the cellar quintet in the same week. Coach lack Eadie's squad was led by Bill Bogin who iinished among the top five ace scorers, and Bob Albo, ace rebounder, two outstanding seniors, who acted as team leaders. ,BEES The l949-50 edition of the Berkeley Bee's was one of the best examples of a fighting ball club that Coach Elgin Erickson has ever had. But they also turned out to be a very hot-cold team. Time and time again the Iackettes came from behind to stem the tide, but when the chips were down they did not seem to have it. A good ex- ample ot this was when Berkeley met Richmond in one of the decisive games and were turned back when the pressure was really on. Forwards Bill Bryant and Al Ferreira, Center Marv West, and Guards Pete Walker, and Bill Wong who made All-County, comprised the starting team at the end oi the season. VARSITY SQUAD Bill Rogin, Bob Albo Co-Captains BEES Billy Wong Captain TENNIS TEAM Cliff Mayne Captain gi' 46. 1 ll ffl :ul ff GOLF TEAM Dave Moffett Captain TENNIS This is the sixth consecutive year that Coach lack Eadie's tennis team has walked away with the A.C.A.L. crown. The lackets swarmed all over prep competi- tion, winning all the school matches and losing to only two men in the individual games. The only loss was to the Cal Frosh who are stocked to the brim with ex-Berkeley talent, anyway. Coach Eadie's singles team consisted of Cliff Mayne, No. lp Stan Cantor, No. 25 Pete Dolliver, No. 35 Ronnie Woods, No. 45 and Pete Long, No. 5. Ralph l-lenkle and Allan Humphrey team up to form the top doubles team and lohn Fitzgib- bon and Don Aulters pair off in the number two team. GOLF Again dominating the A.C.A.L. golf circuit the Berkeley men were pushed only by the Rich- mond Oilers as they duplicated last year's win. Led by dynamic Dave Moffett, who constantly pushed the low seventies, the Jackets were off and running at the gun. ln Moffett, the Iackets had one of the most consistent and most promis- ing golfers since Gordon Wilks carried the B.H.S. colors. This year also featured a brother act, num- ber two man Ierry and number four man Mike Hyde, with Leon Gustafson sandwiched in be- tween them as the third man. Bruce Richardson rounded out the five-man team. 9 I Ji l . .... - WTF! gc ' . i T f . IIE' wus W ! s ,, ' TRACK VARSITY This year the track team was a foundation on which to build better teams in the future. Condi- tioning came extremely late because of construc- tion of a clay track and jumping pits. With only four returning lettermen, Berkeley won two dual meets and lost four. McC1yrnonds and Technical High gained pre-season victories over the lacket Thinclads while Piedmont and Richmond gained the upper hand in the league meets. Only Hayward and Alameda were de- feated. Outstanding men this year are: Wally lack- son, discus throwerg Willie Katka, milerp Denny Garrett and Bon Keasby, 880 men: and team captain Phil Greenwood, broadjumping. BEES Going into the A.C.A.L. meet, Coach Emil La- mar's Bee track team stands a fine chance of capturing the league crown. They have done well in dual meets and have staved off all oppo- sition except Richmond. Individual standouts on the team are Wally Lee, high-speed sprinter, Launders Roy and Ken l-loh, 330-yard run, Doug Crowthers in the low hurdles, and Tom Pecot in the pole vault and broad jump. lim Corley stands out in the high jump and Don Maffley and Emery Gurtice take top distance honors. Thanks are gratefully extended to Mr. Pierce who helped out in coaching. , t t VARSITY BEES t 5 t VARSITY BEES SWIMMING An abundance of talent has made the Berkeley High swim team a tough squad to beat. The only team able to accomplish this feat was Palo Alto High who won in a close meet by only a few points. Berkeley's chances in the North Coast meet this year are excellent. Standouts on the swimming team are lerry Hays, ,holder of the North Coast section record in the individual medley relay team breaststroke. Doug Penrose in the l00-yard freestyle, Spike Conley, 50-yard freestyle, lohn Layser in the 200- yard freestyle, Ieff Foley, 100-yard backstroke, Bob Marshall and Don Hay, diving. The Bee swimming team turned in excellent performances this year and had many outstand- ing men who should greatly help the varsity next year. The Bees won all their meets and should stand an excellent chance of taking the North Coast Section meet. Dave Ruegg consistently captured the 100- yard breaststroke and Karl Marhenke was first man in the 50-yard freestyle. Bill Buckley turned in consistently fast performances and Benny Elkus would occasionally come up with a win in the 100-yard freestyle. Yosh Katsura's diving was also a feature at- traction on the Berkeley team. - - in .1 533 M - if 'H mm -' ' ' - ' mm 3 as, Y 75 b .3 A .' TEACHERS GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION This semester, the Girls' Athletic Association began its activities by Welcoming the new girls in the G.A. program. On April 20th, Berkeley played hostess for our huge five school-playday organization, and on the evenings of April 27th and 28th, another traditionally successful Aqua Antics Show was completed . . . Saturday morning, of the following week, girls were yawning, happily recover- ing from the slumber party! An entirely new club--folk dancing, was launched, resulting in large turnouts after school, and on Fun Night, our nail-pounding con- cession proved to be an ego-builder . . . All too soon, upon looking back on the term, it seemed only a brief period when the council, again, held the final meet- ing for elections. Sincere thanks go to everyone of you for making this semester a G.A.A. success-to the B.O.C., to our officers: Barbara Wong, vice-president, Pat lacob- berger and loyce Conklin, secretaries: Marilyn Morrison, treasurer, Fran Russell, lacket publicity, to the council, and to every member for your cooperation in mak- ing all the activities possible.
