LOW 11 OLLfl PODRIDfl OLLA PODRIDA Fall 1949 BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA PRinCIPRL’S [RESSRGE HIGH SENIORS —SORRY TO LOSE YOU When you entered the High School three years ago, I wrote, Glad to Meet You. If you will look over your 1946 L-IO handbook, you will find the complete message. Well, at last you have finished High School. You have reached the minimum standards of education as required by law in California, and what you do. and where you go from now on, will be of your own choosing. Some of you will be wondering whether or not it will pay to go on and receive more education, and I believe I can assure you. from many years of experience, that education will not hurt anybody. You have made a fine record in our school, and although you are a small class, you have set an enviable record of leadership, and your activities have been the most succss-ful of any Fall semester. The colored picture of your class on the frontispiece gives evidence of what this campus will soon be, with our beautiful Little Theater, our marvelous big Auditorium, and the Memorial Square between the Auditorium and the Academic Building. We will have one of the most beautiful and modern high school campuses in California. I trust that each of you will return many times to see and hear and enjoy the programs which will be presented by our own students and the world renowned artists who will be scheduled to appear. Congratulations on your past successes and best wishes for your future. Your '49er Principal, Elwin LeTendre Jan. 1950 FOREWORD As time passes, the recollections of days gone by grow dim and things that are happening in the present tend to take their place. Therefore, it is good to keep special records of past happenings in order to refresh our memories. Olla Podrida is an excellent example of just such a record. It would be hard to find any substitute that would refresh the memory as well as the Pod does. That is why we of the Pod Staff have done our best to make this book outstanding. We hope that you will find it of continued interest, and as a source of lasting enjoyment. In the years to come, the Pod will be a cherished book in your library. It will unfold the pleasant recollections of your days in Berkeley High School. You will enjoy thumbing back through the pages, recognizing old friends and recalling happy experiences. So guard this book well, as it will be a golden treasure to you in the years to come. Ken Porter Qanjdidli .. . wsl liksL ojua fycLculhf 6 cn SEDIOR PRESIDEM’S iressrge This term was a fitting climax to our last school days. We adjusted ourselves accordingly as we progressed up the ladder of education so that we fitted into the picture of high school life. We finally reached the controlling hand in our school and the time was at hand when the lower classmen looked up to us for guidance. Yes. our high school days were indeed ones to remember, though they went by ever so fast. Our class was blessed with success, not once but several times. Our successes were evidence of the time and work that was spent in order to achieve recognition for outstanding performances. We started the ball rolling by putting over our Junior Prom, The Winter Carousel. one of the few dances to show a profit. We inaugurated the first actual competition in the form of Fun Night. Again we were blessed with success in our dramatics class presentation of Smilin' Through. which served as the dedication of the new Little Theater. Our senior day. Georae Washington Slept Here. was another triumph, as were our dinner and our senior ball. Blue Moon. These accomplishments were symbolic of the fine spirit and enthusiasm of the Fall class of '49. A great deal of credit is due your committee chairmen for their endless work in making your senior days ones to remember. I would also like to thank Mr. LeTendre and members of the faculty for their Dart in making our high school days enjoyable and for assisting us in our senior activities. It was indeed an honor and a privilege to serve as your senior class president, an honor that will be remembered dearly in years to come. I want to thank each and every one of you for vour sud-oort and coooeration. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart. Good luck and the best of success in future years. George Norville. Our new Little Theater was dedicated, and opened with Smilin' Through. The Pep Club was introduced. Our new bleachers were dedicated. Fun Night made its first appearance. The Junior Prom. Block B Dance. Varieties. GA Dance. L-12 play and the Senior Play are long to be fondly remembered. Our football team fought a thrilling season and came through for a straight 41 unbeaten games record and another ACAL championship. If you read this twenty years from now. you’ll probably think. Hmmm. Must have been a busy term. But when I read it I'm going to think. Whew! That WAS a busy term. Thank you again for the privilege of serving you. Beseein'ya. COUNCIL SPEAKERS BUREAU The Fall semester proved a most successful one as far as Speakers' Bureau activities were concerned. The first day of the term found all members registered in Public Speaking II busily concerned with the drive for the Community Chest. Participants in this drive included Barbara Bray, Garfield Byrd, John Cardoza. Charles Filice, Nick Farnham, Skip Hawkins, Lee Henderson, Cecil Hunt. Dave Levens. Joanne Morris, Karl Mosher, Joan Ruscitti and Dave Tilles. This term the American Legion instituted the practice of bestowing a special Public Speaking diploma upon those guest student speakers who were invited to address them upon different occasions. Those honored to date include Constance Budgen, Cecil Hunt and John Reed. Contestants over the air for the Junior Chamber of Commerce I Speak for Democracy ' Contest were Don Bjornson, Bill Clemens, Nick Farnham, Ursula Goldschmidt, Cecil Hunt and Marilyn Mauch. This term the Sciots’ Constitution Contest was open to members of the present Public Speaking II classes only. Listed in the roster of finalists were Nick Farnham, Annette Dunster, John Cardoza. Lennie Mae Johnson, Garfield Byrd. Joanne Morris, and Skip Hawkins. FLO LUDLOW Pratldant GIRLS' RSSOCIRTIOn Freshman reception, dance, cooking contest, ice cream and popcorn sales, dolls for the Berkeley Day Nursery, donations to C. A. R. E. and the Red Cross, new G. A. book. G. A. Assembly. Senior Farewell. All these were activities of the Girls' Association during the Fall term of 1949. With the money made from the dance and the receipts from the sales of popcorn and ice cream and with the cooperation, interest and enthusiasm displayed by my officers. Trinnette. Nancy, Connie. Dorie and Jo Ann, the G. A. was able to plan and successfully sponsor these numerous functions. None of these activities, however, could have ever been held if the girls at Berkeley High School had not responded so eaqorlw v hen asked. From th« heoinn'no of the term when entertainment was needed for the Freshman reception and throughout the entire term when girls were required to sell ice cream and popcorn, the attitude of the girls was more than gratifying. And as the praises are extended, there is one faculty member in particular who cannot be overlooked—Miss Kinell. who spent much time working to help in every way. Many times the words thank you are used without thought and meanino. but when I sav thank you now, I sincerely mean it. Yes. thank you for your cooperation, interest, and enthusiasm, and above ail. thank you for bestowing upon me the honor and privilege of serving you this term, my last at Berkeley High School. At the beginning of each term we get in touch with all new girls from out of town and help them find new friends and get acquainted with the school. This term we have also served at the P.-T.A. dinner, ushered at Smilin' Through, the Varieties and the Senior Play. We have sold popcorn at the home games to help the Girls' Association, have helped keep order in the cafeteria, maintained the popcorn booth and did the decorating for Fun Night. In behalf of the rest of the Senior Friends I'd like to say that we've enjoyed being Friendly Seniors and we'd like to thank those students and teachers who have helped us, especially Miss Helen Kinell, our sponsor. The primary purpose of the California Scholarship Federation is to stimulate higher standards of education and to broaden the ideals of the high school student concerning activities and scholarship. Since students often underemphasize the importance of scholastic achievement, the C.S.F. tries to point out that for a rounded out and happy high school life the student must strive for a high scholastic record as well as participation in school activities. There are I 14 members of the C.S.F. this term: they hold the highest scholastic records in the school. These students may also be found taking an active part in the Board of Control, Rally Committee. Senior Friends, Girls' Association, athletics, music and drama productions, and many other clubs and organizations. Let's hope that in the future the C.S.F. will continue to grow in importance and size and that it will always carry out its motto—Scholarship for Service. Ann Kiefer, President, C.S.F. C. S. F. mid HOnOR SOCIETV HOnOR SOCIETV This year, because spirit has been exceptionally high at Berkeley High, we of the Honor Society have been able to have a variety of activities. As usual, the semi-annual picnic was a roaring success. But in addition to the usual, we have leaped headlong into the unusual. For the first time in our history a room has been set aside for Honor Society use. Guided tours through local industries, securing the hat-check and program selling for all of our new Little Theater (and some day for the Berkeley High School Com-t munity Theater) productions, have kept the honor students busy. We also helped put Fun Night over with a bang with our penny-pitching concession. Most people look upon the Honor Society as a club for bookworms. I think after reading this far. you'll agree that getting the grades, joining, and participating in its activities is an experience you’ll always remember. With the able assistance of our sponsor, Mr. Flanders, and my staff, this term will be one I'll always remembers as my happiest at Berkeley High. Stan Newell. One of the most active groups in this department is the A Cappella Choir. A Cappella this term has done a marvelous job in representing the school at outside programs. During the term the 80-voice choir sang for the Soroptimists, for a Christmas program at a Berkeley bank, for several civic groups and for our own graduation. Activities of this term’s choir included a booth at Fun Night, a dinner at the El Nido Rancho and a noontime show. It is activities like these that help to make the choir the outstanding group it is. Miss Cartwright, our new director, has done a marvelous job this term, and with her leadership the choir can't help but continue to be great. Ken Porter. President BAI1D Let us not overlook the credit the band has deserved this past term. They, the members, have shown enthusiasm as well as school spirit in the participation of rallies, assemblies and games. At present the band has been rehearsing for the Band and Orchestra concert in December. The band will be moving to a new, more spacious home soon. It will be the East wing of the new auditorium. Mr. Morton has worked very hard in making B.H.S.’s band enjoyable. Thanks also to Mr. Rice, who has been kind enough to show the band new ideas for good marching. I think, if the band had new uniforms, they would appear to better advantage and do a better job. Jim Dimitriou ORCHESTRA The B.H.S. Orchestra is composed of 48 members under the able direction of Mr. Earl Morton. We have been far from idle this term. The activities included Smilin’ Through, The Varieties, Footlight Reviews, the Senior Play, Graduation and Band and Orchestra Concert. The Orchestra is open to all B.H.S. students who play a musical instrument. This term's officers are Janet O’Brien, president; Don Lind, vice-president, and La Prele Badouin, secretary. Putting on all these shows means a lot of hard work, but the members of the Orchestra are rewarded with a lot of fun. DRflmflTICS They walked over the mud and gravel where a cement walk was planned to be . . . They entered the just completed Little Theater and shuffled over the uncarpeted floor in the balcony ... They sat down in the new chairs, in the new theater and marveled that a dream of over a decade old was at last a reality . . . The night was September 28. 1949 and the velvet maroon curtains slowly parted for the first time to mark the beginning of a new era of musical and dramatic productions at the Berkeley High School Little Theater. For the memorable occasion Mrs. Florence Schwimley's drama students presented Smilin' Through. a comedy-drama by Allan Langdon Martin. This three-act play, with its lovely costumes and scenery and Irish sentiment with a smile and a tear was the initial performance in the new B.H.S. Little Theater. Displaying inspired spirit the L-12 class presented Clarence. by Booth Tarking-ton, on November 2 in the Little Theater. The cast, directors and behind-scene helpers were all L-I2's. 42 194? VARIETIES THE FOOTUGHT REUUE Footlight Revue, the B.H.S. variety show of Fall 1949 was presented November 9 and 10 in the new Little Theater. Production Director Mrs. Kathryn Livingston, who was assisted by Mrs. Florence Schwimley. Mr. Earl Morton, Mrs. Dorah O'Neill, Miss Margaret Cartwright and Mrs. Sparks, combined the talents of many students of all classes into a star show. The cast for the senior play. George Washington Slept Here, was chosen November 15. Full of sarcasm and humor, the three-act comedy by Moss Harte and George S. Kaufman was presented January 12 and 13 in the Little Theater. Throughout the semester, dramatic students appeared in one-act plays, at noon shows and school assemblies. Yes, on September 28, 1949 the new velvet curtains slowly parted revealing the prologue to Smilin' Through but symbolically much more—a whole new era of inspired dramatic and musical productions. Coach Berkeley ended another successful undefeated season as co-champions of the Alameda County Athletic League. This marked Berkeley's sixth ACAL crown in the last seven years. This wonderful record is marred only by a second place in 1946 as a result of two ties. 13-13, with that old nemesis, Alameda, and a 0-0 tie with Piedmont. The Yellowjackets. spearheaded by their four Gazette All-County selections. Bill Feuillard. senior back, Al Bowers, senior end, Wally Jackson, junior back, and Russ Blythe, junior center, ran their unbeaten string to 41, including that crucial 13-13 tie with Alameda. These fine accomplishments are a tribute to Mr. Moffett his coaching, and his assistants, and will undoubtedly be established as one of the greatest successes of any coach, past or present. Though the Jackets were slow starters they always finished strong and they were a second half threat as they displayed in the Richmond. Albany and El Cerrito games. Berkeley started off the season with a bang by easily downing their two practice tilt opponents. Salinas and Monterey. The respective scores were 26 0 and 29-6. The crucial Big Game 13-0 victory over Piedmont climaxed the '49 campaign and only the Hornet tie prevented the Moffett-Men from another undisputed championship. FRONT ROW (Uft to right): Tommy Dowd. The Juniors played four games, winning one and losing three, while scoring 45 points to their opponents' 42. Berkeley dumped the baby Cougars of Albany, 20-0, and then bowed out in the next three, Richmond 0-2S. Poly (S.F.) 19-25. and Alameda 4-12. The tenth graders wound up with a 4-1 record, scoring 102 digits to 24. They turned in three shutouts during the campaign and their only loss was a 4-13 decision to Alameda. The four victims were: An-tioch 24-0. Albany 18-0. Richmond 19-13 and Alameda 35-0. The tenth and eleventh graders gained valuable experience in these J.V. tilts, and. under the guidina eye of Coach Frank Gross and Mike Goff, former B.H.S. All-County linemen, they learned the fundamentals of the Moffett football system and they worked hard to prepare themselves for Varsity competition in years to come. I0TH GRADE FOOTBALL TEAM BASKETBALL SQUAD BLOCK B This term has been very successful for the Block B. Our dart throwing booth at Fun Night proved very popular. Climaxing our win over Piedmont in the Big Game, the Block B held their semi-annual Big Game Dance. Joanne Condrey was presented a gold bracolet after boing crowned Football Queen of 1949. Horb Henderson, President GAA COUNCIL GIRLS’ GYM INSTRUCTORS GIRLS’ ATHLETIC flSSOCIATIOIl Being president of the Girls’ Athletic Association has meant a great deal to me. I have enjoyed working and planning our many activities with my council and, through them, with the girls in all the sports clubs. This has been a very successful and progressive term for the G.A.A. It was started off with a program for the Low-Ten girls. Next we had a picnic at Live Oak Park. The girls in the G.A.A. also made pom-poms for the football games and about 300 were sold. My thanks to all those who made them. The biggest event of our term was the redecorating and refurnishing of the G.A.A. clubroom. Now the girls finally have a nice room for meetings and for studying. An open house was held to let the rest of the school see what a nice place we have. Thank you Hanna Lowe, vice-president; Barbara Wong and Pat Jacobberger. secretaries: and Lynne Rogers, Jacket Publicity, for a wonderful term. I am sure all that was accomplished this term could not have been done without your help. I want to thank all the girls in the G.A.A. for their wonderful support. I know this will be an outstanding episode in my life.
