In this book, we are showing a cross section of American youth all working together toward ono goal. We all know that ultimately this goal will be reached, but until then many sacrifices will have to be made. Among the first from this school to mako those sacrifices will be the High Seniors, so some sped Photo by Knight attention has been given to this class in the following pages. We have invited three men, prominent in our lives to give us messages on how we students stand in relation to national and community affairs. Their messages should be read with much thought. From them we can learn how to conduct ourselves for the present and future. Merlin Hooper, Editor DLLA PODRIDfl ‱ JUNf ★ PUBLISHED BY THE ★ OLLA PODRIDA STAFF OF ★ BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOl ★ BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA High school groduotes, boys and girls alike, this year confront o grim and challenging world. Each mull resolutely face the focts that our country it engoged in a life and death struggle to preserve those values which moke it worth defending. Each mutt, therefore, moke a personal contribution to the wor effort. In some cotes thit may be octual service in the ormed forces. Oftener it will be continued work in school or college in order to get a much-needed specialized training. You will all agree that thit is no time to moke plant for vacation fun. There is summer work for all. There ore jobs in defense industries; vacancies in business firms; there ore preporedness classes; and volunteer work in civilian defense. Fire prevention wardens ore urgently needed in the forests. Certoinly our long-pressed allies ore not planning in terms of holidays—nor are the enemy nations. Girls os well os boys con help harvest and preserve the state's great crops, crops which mean food for our soldiers. We ore up ogainst the toughest fight in all our history. This war it everybody's worl We con win it only if each pitches in and does a port. There is no time to lose. Our bottle cry should be coots off—shirts on—sleeves rolled up! FRANK S. GAINES Mayor of Berkeley Thousands of boys and girls, now finishing their High School course ore asking, What can I do that will best serve the needs of my country?'' Eoch one of you should realize that you have a definite part to play ond that what you do will count. You ore fortunate in possessing a high school edu-cot on. Thoso of you who hovo skill or on interest in science, should go immediately into advanced training. We sholl need all the skill, the training, the intelligence we con possibly have, not only for the wor period, but also for the peace. We sholl need students who aro skilled in all foreign languages. We sholl need doctors and nurses. We shall need skilled workers in war-time industries. Evening School ond Summer School courses will help you complete needed training, or will assist you to speed up your college graduation. Some of you will work in fields or canneries to salvage the notion's food. Whatever the present calls upon you to do, perform the task with efficiency and it will be a patriotic service. Above all, prepare yourself for life, for the long future, as if you had oil avenues of peace time opportunities open to you, ond you will best fit yourselves for the nation's need. VIRGIl E. DICKSON Superintendent of Schools Members of the Graduating Class of June, 1942, can leave the Berkeley High School with a feeling that they have done their port in helping our government in its war preparations. The senior closs, as well os all the other classes in the school ond members of the alumni, have mode a great contribution. Already, the Berkeley High School is proud to hove 279 blue stors on its service flag, ond grieved to have six gold ones. Our boys ore scattered all over the world; some in the Philippines, some in Asiatic Waters, some on the Pocific and Atlantic Coasts, many now flying over England from Channel Ports, ond mony in ground crews servicing the plones in Iceland ond Burma. All students have entered into the oir raid drills with a spirit of seriousness ond cooperation, and have been commended by many inspectors for our fine drills ond the quickness with which they were carried out. During our oir roid drills we have tix first aid stations completely manned by students who have earned their first oid certificates within the last six months. Even though the war has temporarily stopped the building of our auditorium, Berkeley High School students hove gone forward with the extra curricular activities in such a way os to bring great credit to the school. We have cooperated with the Berkeley Defense Committee ond hove obided by all rules relating to our night gatherings. Wherever you go ond whatever you do, you may feel proud to stole that you ore a groduate of the Berkeley High School. You hove done your part up to this point, ond I om sure thot the future will tee even greater service rendered by your clast. Good luck! EIWIN IE TENDRE Principal ★ ★ ★ ★ This is a time of national emergency. Today our nation, in city, farm, factory, and school, is united in an all out effort for victory. Berkeley High is doing its part. Here, the workers of tomorrow are being trained. Here the future defenders of our country are building physical and mental fitness. Already about three hundred former Berkeley High School students are in the armed forces. Some have died for us, the people of America. Others are carrying on the fight. To these, our heroes, we are forever indebted. We should not fail to remember and honor them. We, the staff of the Olla Podrida, dedicate this book to the past and present fight for freedom, and to the sacrifices made by former Berkeley High students for this glorious cause.
