We have made two major changes for your approval: the introduction of a follow- McCuiiagh able theme, and the addition of color. We have attempted to take two students. Bob and Betty Berkeley, through a school day which, being more than typical, is to all intents and purposes all-inclusive. The color has been added primarily to stimulate interest and to hint the possibilities of a new era in Berkeley High yearbooks. We sincerely hope that this issue of the Olla Podrida will lead to the increased inter- est in and budget for future Pods . ALVIN HAMBLY, JR. Editor. IN MEMORIAM EDGAR ALLEN MOFFETT TEACHER AND FRIEND 90034l)J Photo by TOM KNIGHT POD DEDICATION THIS TERM we wish to dedicate our Pod to a man who gives most graciously of himself, his time, and his experience to the students of Berkeley High. For twenty- three years he has guided our paths and blazed our trails through the deep, ever- green forest of music. Five times he has produced first division concert bands in state-wide competition. He has, term after term, turned out a marching band of which we are justly proud. His excellent direction and coordination of our orchestra have rounded out innumer- able assemblies, variety shows, operettas and graduations. Our many successful small ensembles and soloists would have missed the mark but for his help. In those of us fortunate enough to have been under his training he has inspired the ideals of good sportsmanship, precision, and constancy. To those who will listen, his subtle good humor and his generosity can teach much more: faithfulness, loyalty, and humility. With wisdom and clever psychology he is offering us knowledge rather than book- learning— and we like it. Mr. Earl Morton, we salute you. ALVIN HAMBLY, JR., Editor. THE Berkeley High School, under the leadership of the present High Twelve Class, has shown a fine spirit of cooperation throughout this whole semester. All classes and groups have cooperated to make our assemblies, our shows, and our rallies a success. The Variety Show in the Social Hall and the Armistice Day Assembly on our athletic field stand out as a tribute to the courteous attention which the students have shown to the things which are presented to them. Our football season was outstanding and profitable, even though we did lose two games. Our sale of student body cards was most encouraging, and 80 per cent of our students bought cards. This gave the Board of Control a fine start on its financial budget, and made possible many things which a school of this size needs. The school dances, with outside orchestras being used, were well attended, and a good time was assured by the well organized committees which handled these dances. Comparing our lives with the lives of other students in other lands, and comparing our educational opportunities with the opportunities throughout other states of our United States, we surely must feel thankful and appreciative of this holiday season. It is my hope that your future lives will be as happy as they have been up to date, and I wish the members of the graduating class a Very Merry Christmas and innumerable Happy New Years to come. Hayward had just too much speed and power for the light Berkeley squad, springing Sousa, Silva, and Morrison loose for long gains and touchdowns in every quarter of the game. A drive by Glenn Bil- yeu ' s trusty passing arm resulted in Berkeley ' s touchdown. Warren Bryant catching the touchdown pass. Mervin, Berkeley ' s trusty place-kicker, converted. Juniors Ray Epperson, and George Benson, filling in for Schiveley and Lucas, turned in fine per- formances. BERKELEY 12, RICHMOND 6 In their last home game, Berkeley upset the favored Richmond Oilers, 1 2 to 6. After intercepting a pass deep in Berkeley territory, the Oilers drove over the first score, and led, 6-0 at the half. Early in the third quarter, passes by Bilyeu and runs by Wos- ser and Fields drove from the Richmond 40 to a touchdown. Fields punching over. In the final period, George Benson ran back a punt 32 yards to the Richmond 28. From the 25 Bilyeu passed to Dan Mervin just short of the goal. Fields again smashed over. By George Cunningham. Photos by KNIGHT and BERGER BERKELEY 0, PiEDMONT 18 Stuart, Agnew, and Chamberlain had too much speed for Berkeley in the early stages of the Annual Big Game. Stuart made a 37 yard run, and went 39 yards on a pass for two scores, and Agnew plunged for the third, early in the second quarter. At this point Berkeley took the offensive, and drove to a first down on the Piedmont 1 3. How- ever, Stuart intercepted Bilyeu ' s pass and the half ended. The second half started with Berkeley moving into Piedmont territory, when Mervin blocked Agnew ' s punt, and there the rest of the game was played. Berkeley came closest after Mervin ' s kick had been downed by Bennett on the Clan 1 yard line. Agnew kicked out to Bilyeu, who returned 20 yards to the 1 9. Bilyeu then passed to Hooper on the five for a first down. On second down, a quick whistle caught Bilyeu for a ten yard loss. The next two passes fell incomplete, and Berkeley had failed to score. By George Cunningham. NOTE: Due to extremely unfavorable weather conditions at both the Piedmont and Richmond games, there were no satis- factory pictures taken. As a result we have not been able to make the pictures coincide with the copy. Our excellent staff of photographers, however, obtained action shots of pre-league games as well as league games which we thought deserved publication. Photos by KNIGHT and BERGER BERKELEY 6, ALAMEDA 0 With Glenn Bilyeu ' s passing 13 yards to Ed Abraham in the last ten seconds for a touchdown, Berkeley defeated Alameda 6-0. In the third quarter, the Jackets made the first real threat, going 38 yards to a first down on the two yard line, but Alameda held. Later, a drive sparked by Warren Bryant carried Berkeley to the six inch line, where Bilyeu was stopped. The Hornets kicked out, and Bilyeu started passing, com- plete twice to Hooper, once to Mervin on interference, and then to Abraham and 6 points. BERKELEY 0, ALBANY 3 Battling it out for second place in the League, Albany downed Berkeley for the first time, 3-0. A second quarter field goal from 15 yards out by Jim Andersen, Albany ' s tackle, was the only score of the game. Berkeley staged a drive from their own 44 to the Cougar 6 in the fourth quarter. Bilyeu threw four complete passes. Here the at- tack bogged, and Bilyeu ' s fourth down pass was intercepted. By George Cunningham.
