New branches are growing constantly upon this tree. The l96 I Tarantulan has decided to spin its web among the many branches to capture some of the knowledge that the tree has to offer. In keeping with its goal, the theme of this book is How Our Branches Grew . The purpose of it is to emphasize that in order to become a big tree with many branches, we must begin as little twigs. MONTAGUE The Senior Class dedicates this the first Berkeley yearbook, THE TARANTULA, to our class advisor, Miss Virgie Deal, and Mr. Donald J. Montague, our first principal. Through patience, encouragement, understanding and their friendship, they have taught us what our Tree of Education symbolizes. As Alexander Pope once said, Tis education forms the common mind. Just as the twig is bent the tree's inclined. The dedication of this yearbook is just a small way of expressing our sincere thanks for their time and service. BROWN Men and women who live above and beyond the frustrations of the day are the greatest need of the hour. We are all creatures of the day in which we live. We must strive to find serenity in the' midst of stress, hurry, and confusion as well as to recover high courage and adequate enthusiasm to meet the challenge of the day. In these, perhaps the most confusing and perplexing days in the world's history, we all need new strength for living as we seek to maintain an inner sense of security. We need fresh strength and trust, not only to allay our fears and anxieties, but also to gain wisdom and direction for intelligent participation in our nation's intricate problems: to selflessly help meet the want and suffering of the world's millionsg and especially to find guidance in making our own most effective contribution to world peace. In these days, we have tapped the sources of the universe for power and speed, but so far we have not found a way to use these discoveries for the good of mankind. By daily renewal of ourselves in God's presence, we may discover that our appointed duty is to make a holy place in at least one spot on earth from which will radiate an influence toward the achievement of hope, compassion, and peace far more powerful and far-reaching than we realize. Agglffanf Pfvhajbaf MR. ALBERT E. N ETTLES It is a sincere pleasure for me to extend best wishes to the class of 1967. In your pur- suit of future endeavors, remember well your days at Berkeley. These days should serve you well as you commence to seek opportunities available to you as avenues of the future. You are to look upon this year as a beginning in striving towards bigger and better accept- able goals. Realize also, that though graduation serves as a climax to years of intellectual, moral, and spiritual growth, it is but a milestone along the path of challenging tasks of life. Hold high your heads and your alma mater in esteem as you take your places in an ever- changing, complex society! Vx , ' . I - I I 3 'ze' ' 'P' 'A' ' . He is just away! With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you--oh you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and the glad return-- Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Hereg The touches of his hands have strayed As reverently as his lips have prayedg When the little brown thrush that harshly chirred Was dear to him as the mocking-birdg ' And he pitied as much as a man in pain A writhing honey-bee wet with rain. Think of him still as the same, I say: He is not dead--he is just away! James Whitcomb Riley - ' .
