Girls Establish Tough Roles Friday, December 3. was an exciting night for the girls of Berkeley High School . even more exciting than raiding the boys’ locker room. This was the night of the 1976 Powder Puff game, sponsored by the 77 Collage staff. The Junior and Sophomore team, led by captains Brenda Green. Cheryl Henderson. Lucille Walker, and Alice Warren, had control of the ball for most of the game. Their team proved to have bigger girls and more experience to their advantage. The Senior and Freshman team was led by captains Tonia Scruggs and Edith Simmons. Although this was the Freshmen's first year at Powder Puff, they showed willing- ness to learn and their spirit added extra joy to the team. Mary Worth made a touchdown for the Junior-Sophomore team in the third quarter. It seemed impossible for the Senior-Fresh man team to move the ball, but they never gave up. Their last play quarterback sneak, was successful in the eyes of the players but not with referee Coach Iarw is He claimed that quarterback Tenia Scruggs was short of the goal line and that was the end of the game. Homecoming, basketball games . All these are part of the times of your life. All these the annual staff faithfully recorded in the Stag. With a smaller staff this year, the annual staff, under the direction of dedicated leaders and the guidance of two great sponsors, worked hard to make an annual Berkeley would be- proud of. Creating layouts. completing triplicate sheets, writing copy and captions and cropping pictures were all a part of the hard work the annual staff did. The annual staff attempted to collect all the special moments, all the happy and sad times, all the excitement and frustration and weave them into a unique design we call the 77 Stag. Hours upon hours of planning, preparation, and anticipation have come to an end. But one trait that came through no matter how late it was and no matter how many times we felt like giving up was dedication. We, the members of the annual staff hope the 77 Stag helps you remember the times of your life. Annual staff members wonder if the line 1 - 33 Stagline Serves as a Student Media Working together in a group isn’t always an easy thing to do. Everyone won’t always agree on the same ideas. Continually finding new ideas and agreeing on them is rare. Under the supervision of Mr. Watts, the Stagline staff worked to combine the suggestions of the students to produce a more complete newspaper. The staff conducted very complete research so that each story was factual, informative and interesting. The paper staff can be described as a group of hard working and dedicated young men and women. Having these young people working together as a team has made this year’s Stagline the best ever. It was a student media which reflected student ideas and involvement. ••4. A. AA Bus Drivers Getting Us There Who needed them? Well. Berkeley high school did. It we didn't have these drivers how would the majority of students get to school in the morning? The bus drivers here at Berkeley had a very important and nerve wracking job. To begin with they had to get up at a very early hour in order to get herds of screaming kids to school on time Also, they had to be- careful and watch out for speeding automobiles They also had the responsibility of keeping a clean bus. Through rain, sleet, flat tires, skipped breakfasts and dead batteries the bus drivers calmly tackled each day. In spite of high spirits and proud determination, the Stags endeavored with all integrity that could be derived from their hearts, but all was in vain. Twenty returners from last year's ▼B I varsity team proved not enough to tackle such experienced teams as were included on the schedule this season. With many new team members the team experienced a rebuilding process, but the Stagettes improved with each game. Sheila Brown led scoring for Berkeley as Frankie Jackson and Alicia Coaxum combined to dominate the rebounding. Each member proved vital, though, and aided in a very worthwhile season for the J.V Stagettes. The team was led by Julia Johnson. Frankie Jackson. Sheila Brown, Bernetha Green and Dekora Jenkins. Together they played as a team and surpassed the many obstacles on their road to victory’ after victory. 66 Talent Brings Successful Season The 1976-77 J.V. Stags were one of the most talented groups BHS has had in some time. Quickness and over-all ability won many games for them. Coach Willie Frazier did a fine job preparing and coaching his team throughout the season The Stags w-cre led through the season under the leadership of Danny Shine and Lewiston Miller. Other bright young players were freshman David Wall, Sophomores John Cash and Ricky Gaskins. The future looks good for the basketball program at Berkeley with the growing of this fine J.V. team. The girls steadily improved each game with leadership from Martha Berry and Angie White Two young and inexperienced players. Brenda Dubose and Linda Fleming, both sophomores improved each game to spark the team on to an eight-game winning streak. Tami Jackson and Lynn Weaver balanced the team with their fine shooting skills. They scrapped and fought in practice and in the games, but just didn’t win as many games as they wanted. The Stags were not really an all-around talented team, so they relied on other things to win. Hustle and a little bit of that thing called pride helped them through the season. The Stags mainly relied on the play of their four seniors James Rivers, Mike Simmons, Alfonzo Wilson, and Bill Bonds. Two boys off last year’s J.V. team did a fine job and worked their way into the lineup. These players were Mike Lawyer and Isaiah Williams. Sophomore Melvin Lawrence also showed to be a future standout. The Stags worked hard throughout the season and probably deserved more than they got. The entire school changed over to the quarter system, but the administration handled the many problems accompanying this system and kept classes running smoothly. Each administrator had many other duties during the day besides seeing that the quarter system remained functional. Mr. Modica spent a great deal of his time in his office as it seemed to be the busiest place during a BHS day. Mr Williams was also in a busy position. He handled the disciplinary actions involving students, the issuing of books each quarter, and the attendance records of the school Mr. Johnson had to take over the position when Mr. Williams became ill midway through the second quarter. Finally, the job of maintaining the annex was done by Mr. Hill. Through the efforts of these men our school was run effectively and efficiently. They made the 1977 year one of the more memorable in the times of your life. Mr. Frank Modica Univ. of New York, M A. Principal Mr. Charles Hill W. Mrs Brown, and Mrs Turner Teachers Strive in New System The installation of quarter system at BHS began a new experience for many of our teachers. Each teacher saw new students enter their class at the beginning of each quarter. This forced teachers to go through the trouble of issuing and taking up books each quarter, but the teachers kept on providing us with the knowledge that they knew would help us in the future. The teachers of BHS were among the finest in the State. They offered classes in almost every field of education. Some of the classes that were taught were not offered at any other school in the state. Yes, despite the new system, the teachers played a big part in making BHS a first rate high school. rft co Right Mrs Legrcc. Mrs Berghetser. Mrs Rivers. Mr Goertzcn, Miss Dunlop. Webster defines a teacher as One that teaches; one whose occupation is to instruct.” He fails to leave room for warmth, optimism, wit. or error. These are human characteristics, and the BHS teachers are definitely human. They are the best kind In a sense, they arc the people that create Berkeley. Many people are unable to see both sides of a teacher — at school and away from school. While at school the teacher is continually working and preparing for classes, but their work does not end when the school day is over. They must go home, grade papers, prepare lessons for the next day, and even make up tests. They even have work days when they attend school and students are allowed to stay home. Yes, teachers are hard-working, human beings. They will certainly stand out as you remember the times of your life. Physical Education Health 95 Left to right Coach Watson. That's why Westvaco is dedicated to the principles of multiple use of our woodlands and those we help our neighbors manage through cooperative agreements. That's why we cooperate so closely with the National Wildlife Federation, its state-based affiliates, our state and federal w ildlife and forestry agencies. Again and again they have demonstrated a strong dedication to responsible development and use of America's natural resources. The renew ability of forests can assure not only a steady supply of wood products but also abundant wildlife, watershed protection and esthetic values for afl people for all time.
