USS BERKELEY USS BERKELEY was commissioned in December, 1962 in Philadelphia. 437 feet long and displacing 4500 tons, BERKELEY employs some of the most advanced air, surface and sub-surface weapons systems utilized by today ' s destroyer Navy. BERKELEY ' S mission is to conduct offensive operations with naval strike, anti submarine, or amphibious operations and to protect aircraft carriers and support forces against submarine, surface and air attack. BERKELEY can detect and destroy hostile air, surface and sub-surface craft, and she can control intercept aircraft, collect electronic intelligence, and participate in evacuation, blockade and surveillance operations. She has also performed successful search and rescue operations. On WEST-PAC ' 86- ' 87, her most recent of many cruises, BERKELEY visited eight countries, conducting naval oper- ations with five of the countries. She left San Diego, CA in August 1986, returning in February 1987. In addition to the Navy Expeditionary fvledal, and the Humanitarian Service Medals. BERKELEY has also won the Navy Unit Commendation, Battle Efficiency E and the following medals: Combat Action. Republic of Vietnam Campaign, Repulbic of Vietnam Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense, Armed Forces Expiditionary and Vietnam Service. I Gefie to,B[ liaiba Gene m«]i
