f COMMANDER THOMAS M. WARD, JR., U. S. NA VY Commander Thomas M, WARD Jr., United States Navy was born in Pontiac, Michigan on December 4, 1928, Upon graduation from the United States Naval Academy he received his commission as an Ensign in June, 1951. After serving aboard the USS ENGLISH CDD 6965 for three years as Gunnery Officer and First Lieutenant, and aboard the USS TOWHEE CAM 3885 as Executive Officer for almost one year, CDR WARD took command ofthe Uss CARDINAL CMSC Coy 45. CDR WARD graduated from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California, in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He then attended Massachusetts Institute of Tech- nology where he received his Master of Science degree in 1958, After Serving two years aboard the USS GYATT CDDG lb as Gunnery Officer he was assigned to the Pacific Missile Range as Flight Safety Officer, CDR WARD was Executive Officer of the USS BUCHANNAN CDDG 14D from 1963-64 and attended the Naval War College from 1964-65. From 1965 tmtil receiving orders for detachment to the USS BERKELEY he served as an instructor in the Weapons Department at the U.S. Naval Academy.

CUMMANDER WILLIAM R. SMEDBERG IV, U. S. NAV CDR SMEDBERG reported to Uss BERKELEY as its third Commanding Officer in January 1966, wlgileaflldle - T Ship was on station in the Western Pacific. This followed a tour of duty in command of USS BRON CDE 10379, 0119 Of the U.S. Navy's most advanced Anti-Submarine War-fare ships. After graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1951, CDR SMEDBERG s e rved in the Battleship WISCONSIN CBB 643 for three Years, during which period the ship, although homeported in Norfolk, Vlrglma, Spent 14 months in the Western Pacific during and after the KoreanWar. This tour was f0110Wed by two years in tne Atlantic Fleet Destroyer Uss BEATTY CDD 7565. In Subsaequenttsea duty, he has served as Commanding Officer of Uss LAWRENCE COUNTY CLST 8872, HS EXGCHUVG Offwef Of USS JOHN A.
