USS BERKELEY DDG 15 WESTPAC 29 APRIL 1967 - 25 OCTOBER 1967 USS BERKELEY is a fast highly maneuverable destroyer, commissioned at the U, S. Naval Base, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 15 December 1967. She has an overall length of 437 feet, a beam of 47 feet and a displacement of 4,500 tons. BERKELEY carries 25 officers and 340 enlisted men. Three times, BERKELEY has deployed to Viet Nam waters and on each cruise she has distinguished herself. In August 1964 the ship played a role in the Tonkin Gulf PT Boat incident for which she was awarded the Navy Unit Com- mendation. The highlight of her second period overseas was the daring and dramatic rescue of six U. S, Air Force crewmen in the face of heavy enemy fire. On this her third and most recent assignment BERKELEY reeked havoc along the coast of North and South Viet Nam on Operation Seadragon and in support of friendly land actions. Many times was the ship fired on, but mirac- ulously never hit directly. Her 5 54 rapid fire guns silenced many enemy shore batteries that opened on her. The ship also served for several weeks as flagship for the Northern Search and Rescue Commander. In a ceremony that has become a BERKELEY tradition in the Gulf of Tonkin the Change of Command took place 11 July 1967. 1967 CRUISE STATISTICS Total rounds 5 fired 5055 Engine Miles traveled 47,722,1 Total rounds of enemy fire within 500 Fuel consumed gals. 3,511,725 yds of ship 972 Water distilled gals. 3,294,262 Helicopter details 63 Water received gals. 482,258 Underway refuelings 37 Mail Received lbs. 16,766 Underway ammunition replenishments 19 Mail sent lbs. 6,574 Underway AF replenishments 7 Stamps sold 53,858.80 Underway AKS replenishments 5 Money orders sold S107,003,69 High line transfers: Payroll 3S530,000,00 AO 36 Meals served 648,000 DD 17 Ice cream gals, 360 CA 13 Tons of provisions used 72 CAG 7 Loaves of bread baked 94,000 D DLG 1 Number cokes sold 132,000 Sh1P'S Store Sales 340,000.00 Cash value part requisitions 360,000.00
