The Mites opened with a sound drubbing of Tenatly and climaxed the season by trouncing River Dell on Thanksgiving Day. The season's highlight, of course, was the Dumont game. The Mites entered the game as the underdogs. They fought to a tie, only to lose inthe last quarter. Still, it was acknowl- edged by all that a fine job had been done. Coach Charles Baker and his assistants, Robert Alvord and Robert Ellis, have encourag- ing outlooks on the i958 season. Carrying a difficult schedule, the Mites posted a 5-ll record, The main men on the team were Anton Gross, Dave Adler, and Mike Gross, who carried the singles' burden. The doubles were handled by Jim Brennan, Frank Wolpert, Jim Delaney and Rich Dalghren. Though last year's record was not the best, Coach Ralph Brandt looks forward to next year's season and says the Mites will improve again. VARSITY BASKETBALL The basketball team, under Coach John Habeeb in his first season as coach, had a fair year. lt posted a 5-l2 record. However, the success of the season cannot be based on the record. Many games were lost in the last minute and one must consider that BHS had only one letter-man, Ed Cichewicz. Barry Rover paced the early scoring, while Cichewicz closed fast and finished the season by pouring in 32 points against Westwood in a season high for the Mites. Stepanian hurled 4826 innings of baseball without giving up an earned run! This, as coach Gulnick said, is awfully close to a county record-if it isn't. With the loss of only three seniors, prospects for the l958 Mites look very good. 7l f fl ,, -'iv ,'n. . rg 6 V Lg L 3? i 115, Sf' I ,t ' - 1, X Vx wi, , , Ha ,AWAY is , s '1' Q? ,L 'Vx w Nm I ,f A ,. ui A QL 1-iflf , fx . fx gf xmas .f.: 3 ,yigmpl afww S 'ii fm , ff ,l,X,-.f,:1fr-f 1- ' 5 YV1, , Q.: vw x x., , . . ,Y K x . It seems not too long ago that we became lost in the tangled maze of halls in the huge build- ing By the time we recovered, we had earned the title of Freshmen. James Hiney was the class president of our first important year and represented our class well. Our two freshmen dances increased our treasury balance, proving their success. Were we proud and excited to show off our class puns when they arrived! We were all so afraid that we wouldn't have our trip to Rye Beach but as June rolled around we did, and it came off with a bang. Many stomachs were turned after dizzy rides on the roller coasters. Foremost in our minds was the fast approaching Graduation Day Everyone was a little worried, hoping for a clear night on the eve of Com- mencement But never a drop of rain fell and the evening of growing up passed before us with lightning speed and before we knew it, it was over and we were sophomores. ln the tenth grade thenewness of high school was still in the air, but we settled down to another successful year with Richard Vaillant as our president. We had two trips 'that year: they were to Lederle Laboratories, with the Biology class and Mrs. Shanahan, and to Rye Beach again to recapture the good time of the yearlbefore. The Thanksgiving Day Parade made us feel proud of our band as we watched their clever maneuvers on T.V. Then quick as a wink, we were juniors and only a step away from the very top of the ladder Our president Jack Carley, worked as hard as any of us at selling stationery and all- occasion cards We held two dances and three trips--one to Valley Forge, one to Philadelphia, and the other to the Stock Exchange. Our class broke the record on ticket sales for Junior Plays. Two nights were sold out for the very highly successful Too Many Dates , capably directed by Mr Best Then the scurrying, pushing and shoving began, to select the Class Ring. It was a hard choice but the square style won out. June came up fast and our last final exams were taken The day the final marks were issued we knew we had reached the pinnacle. Entering our senior year, we faced an entirely new way of life-part time. Due to crowded conditions this new format was necessary. Rising early to arrive for the 7:45-12:30 session was quite an ordeal at first, but soon the morning seesion was over, and we found ourselves leaving school at 5:30. Beginning in September and during the year, we sold book covers Christmas cards, and, of course, our own 1958 edition of the Crossroads. Everyone got to know Rodger Nogaki this year, for he was the president of the senior class and a very able leader Last minute preparations and memorizing lines was a common scene around the auditorium during the days before the Junior-Senior Play, entitled Junior Miss. Miss Louise Frownfelter directed the classes in the production which received high praise from everyone. Carl Meyerhuber amazed everyone at the Christmas Dance as Santa-perfect casting! Miss Terra and the committees were busily reaching final -preparations for the Crossroads. During the first month of yearbook sales, the class managed ,easily to sell well above the stated quota. The Variety Show Christmas Pageant, and the Spring Concert were also big events of the year, and Mr Hunter s Mock Trial Assembly was agreed to be the most. The fortunate mem- bers of Student Congress were looked upon with envy as they took off for Washington, D. C., on a trip lasting three days. Quickly the days flew by and before we knew it we were being measured for caps and gowns. The question of the prom was on everyone's mind. Could we have it out of school? The answer is yes , as Mr. Hunter would say, and after committee meetings the Swiss Chalet was chosen. This would be the last big social event of the year for the seniors and l7O couples rushed to sign up for a gala affair. When June I3 finally rolled around the boys in their tuxes and the girls in their formals whirled around the floor to the scent of beautiful flowers. Our days were being numbered and the big moment we had waited for since 7th grade was drawing near--graduation. And then the moment arrived. The band played Pomp and Circumstance while two lines of graduates marched org, one in white and one in blue The time to say goodibye had come. Today we would leave behind some of the most memorable and treasured moments of our lives. THE CLASS OF '58 n 1 ' l v 1 n 1 in - ar v n 1 an C .
