I 4 Dinh 431 . 1 z...,' CROSS ROADS BERGENFIELD HIGH SCHOOL BERGENEIELD, NEW JERSEY .4 'Q At the time of the American Revolution the town of Bergentield was known as Schraalen- burgh, which is derived from the Dutch, and means a barren knoll or hill. The oldest road in town was the Schraalenburgh Road, once called King's Highway and now Washington Avenue. On Schraalenburgh Road stood the old stone house lpictured above? which was then used as a tavern. About the year l907 the old stone house was demolished, and a frame dwelling house was erected on the site a little to the southwest of the intersecting roads. ln i923 the property was acquired by the Bergenfield Board of Education and the house was moved in order to provide-for the erection of the Harding School which, with recent additions, has become our junior-senior high school building. The main purposes of the organiza- tion are to teach the students to dance and to have fun while they are learning. The students try to learn the basic dance steps. They do various square dances, the Virginia Reel, fox trot, polka, waltz, and any fancy steps they wish to learn. The Junior Frolickers haveri't any officers but there are representatives in each of the homerooms. Almost all the members of these grades are members. The sponsors for the club are Mrs. McGoldrick and Miss Wilson. There are ninety-four members in this club. GIRLS' TENNIS CLUB The Girls' Tennis Club was formed this year under the sponsorship of Mrs, Millard and Mrs. Kinney. The difference between the two groups is their experience and the color of their accessories, since they are dressed alike in flashy red uniforms, In the fall, the two groups perform and accompany the B.H,S. band at all the football games, and teach beginning students how to twirl. Along with twirling at school auditorium programs and local parades, there was much preparation this year for the festival which was held at Clifton Stadium and for the Macy Day Parade, where along with our band they were televised. The first team twirled with two batons, Their sponsor is Miss Joan Mason, ll- ill .I V, 1 ---5-Q--P .4 ei The sponsor is Miss Mason The number of members is ten The officers are Jofran Co L Q R Woods, and Dorothy Steinmetz who are co-captains. The purpose of the club is to carry and guard the colors for the Bergenfield High School Band. The Color Guard marched with the Band in- the Macy Thanksgiving Day Parade and at 6 U A R D Clifton Stadium, executing its many new and intricate maneuvers. ff.
