The oldest road in town was the Schraalenburg Road, once called King's Highway and now Washington Avenue. On Schraalenburgh Road stood the old stone house ipictured abovel which was then used as a tavern. About the year l907 the old stone house was demolished, and a frame dwelling house was erected on the site a little to the southwest of the intersecting roads, ln l923 the property was acquired by the Bergenfield Board of Education and the house was moved in order to provide for the erection of the Harding School which, with recent additions, has become our junior-senior high school building. 2 px L 3, I-r ,. iw V ,- ,W W, .,:,,, , K , - ,if-ui., Q .. ff-ev T va ' if k , ,,,L M ,-. 5 , in ,X - 7 y-xg--wean ff i J 14,-ww -2 fa I - , ' Q: ff. - fX.2.j'x A1 gf ' -A ' - Q fy WK Ti ifj iiii, M if QQ ' i Ji? -Q ' , K M k x mtg, .,.. f 5 , .' LATIN CLUB ALL students in the Latin classes are eligible for membership in the Senatus Populusque Romanus. The club aims to help its members learn more about classical civili- zation and to give them the opportunity for comparing the life of the ancient Romans with present-day habits and customs. They have as their goal each season to put on an assembly program of their own, be- sides contributing to other assemblies. The manager is Astrid Johnson. JUNIOR FROLIC-ERS THE Junior Frolic-ers is a social club for the seventh graders in particular, and is open also to any eighth or ninth graders who care to join. Our purpose is to have the new comers to the school get acquainted and have fun with their classmates and thereby feel they have an important place in the school's activities. To date the Club has had weekly meetings and has learned the fundamental steps of square dancing and social dancing. A Hallo- we'en party given in October was very suc- cessful with all the preparations, decorations, entertainment, and refreshments handled by student committees. Our first taste of high school activity was the Spring Dance which we so proudly sponsored. The year sped quickly by and our biggest thrill came on a clear, sunny day in June when we steamed happily up the Hudson. Remember how sunburned we all were l l Junior High Graduation found us singing Now the Day is O-o-ver-er and applaud- ing our president Johnny Drakeford. The next fall we were sophomores. lt was a good feeling no longer to be the babies of the high school. Those senior assemblies were really great! We could almost see the stage from our seats on Washington Avenue! Our Fall Dance and April Showers Dance were our social events of the year. Juniors l-one word into which was packed fun, excitement, activity, and plenty of hard work. An innovation in our junior year was the performance of three one-act plays which took the place of the annual Junior Class play. Our greatest thrill was the presentation of our sensational variety show This ls What Killed Vaudeville . Our Shirt Tail Prom was the first of its kind to be given at B. H. S. but the traditional Junior-Senior Prom that soft and starry May night was, of course, a much greater event. Seniors-at last l l l Our exciting senior year got off to a flying start with our simply terrific football team. We cheered madly from amid the Darlene bars, hot dogs and root beer. Bob Harvie was elected president and he did a fine job despite the fact that he was murdered in the first act of The Thirteenth Chair . The Christmas Dance was a festive, holiday affair with twin Christmas trees-one aglow in the court yard and the other adorning the dance floor. We worked very hard selling Christmas cards but it was worth it, for re- member that wonderful day in late January when we heard, We have enough money for our yearbooks! We have more than any Senior Class ever had l l l Because of our surplus we were able to choose a new cover for our familiar Crossroads in hopes that B. H. S. would be especially proud of the l95l edition. Our most glamorous event was the Prom. Once again we thrilled to the rustle of gowns, sweet music in the background and excitement in the air. And finally, graduation l l l-the goal we have strived for these many years. Our paths will go in many directions but our thoughts will now and then stray back to the Memories of the Class of '51 76 CLASS WILL To the future seniors the Class of '51, being of sound mind, memory, and understanding, makes the following bequests: We, the members of the Traffic Squad, bequeath to the juniors the stampeding traffic and the traffic buttons. The senior cheerleaders, Elaine, Marie, Marlene, Marilyn, Joan and Barbara, leave to the J. V.'s the hard to equal spots held by them this year. Miss Brown's English students leave her rush, rush classes to the juniors with the hope that they will be able to keep up with her better than we did. Willy Hafner donates his curly hair to any girl who needs it on a rainy day and he will walk away bald. Barbara Oddo, Mary Ann Liska and Eleanor Prunty leave their seats in the Campus to Ann Brown, Camille DeFlora, and Kay Holland. Connie Evans, Marlene Frederick, Vera Showler, and Barbara Wilken leave their broken hearts to any girls who have the misfortune of having boyfriends who join the Navy. We, Billy Huth and Mickey Maclaire, give our much needed height to Dick Appleton ahd Dick Brand. We, the twenty-five truant boys, leave our truancy and punishment to any junior boys who feel it's worthwhile to try it. Marianne Bodenstein, Anne Flannery, and Merillyn Halligan bequeath the honor of seeing that their post is supplied with food to Mr. Claxton. We, Marilyn Dow and Audrey Mallette, contribute our skating talents to Alice Larsen. Johnny Drakeford passes down his athletic ability to anyone who can catch it. The senior members of the football team bequeath their outstanding record to the team of '51 . Nadine and Vicky leave their long hair to Carole Santon and Harriet Roberts. Joan Hirtes, Grace Gentile, and Violet Mastroberte, as twirlers, put away their batons and leave, knowing that the up-and-coming junior twirlers will carry on. The two Mr, Presidents , Harvie and Hargreaves, leave their responsi- bilities to anyone who is lucky i?l enough to be elected. We, the senior hot rods leave being souped up to any car that can take it. Joe Chiaradio leaves his difficult music and position as accompanist to Janet Pratt, and all the rest of the senior musicians leave their hard to fill spots in the band, orchestra, choir, and glee clubs. ln conclusion, we, the Class of 'Sl depart with happy memories of the happenings during our stay at B. H. S. Many of those memories would not be happy if it had not been for our four wonderful sponsors, Miss McCann, Mrs. Pembleton, Miss Rule, and Mr. Adams. They have helped us through the most difficult situations and we shall never forget them nor their unselfish attitude toward us. SENIOR CLASS OF l95l 77 REFRESHMENT WCOMMITTEES AT GAMES W.
