THE CROSS ROADS Washington and Clinton Avenues in Pre-Revolutionary Days AT the time ot the American Revolution the town of Bergenfield was known as Schraalen- burgh, which is derived from the Dutch, and means a barren knoll or hill. The oldest road in town was the Schraalenburgh Road, once called King's Highway and now Washington Avenue. On Schraalenburgh Road stood the old stone house lpictured above! which was then used as a tavern. About the year 1907 the old stone house was demolished, and a frame dwelling house was erected on the site a little to the southwest of the intersecting roads. ln l923 the property was acquired by the Bergentield Board of Education and the house was moved in order to provide for the erection of the Harding School, which with recent additions has become our junior-senior high school building. CLASS HISTORY S mere Freshmen, we embarked on our strange and new adventures, awed by the vast- ness and wonderment of our new surroundings. We elected an enthusiastic presi- dent, Dick Truhan, who ably led us through our first year. Our successful Bunny Hop proved to the upperclassmen we, too, were socially inclined. To 'highlight the activities of the year, our class took the traditional boat ride up the Hudson. SiIly Sophomores, -that was what we were being called, but we again showed our social traits by giving our first Halloween Dance, our second success. Dick Truhan again succeeded in defeating his opponents and became president of the Sophomore Class. When we gave our St. Patrick's Day Dance, we fast became accepted into the social circle of the Senior High. ln our Junior year we endeavored to enter into larger fields of entertainment by giv- ing our first Variety Show. Our former vice-president, Don Moos, had the presidency of the Junior Class bestowed on him. As the winter months came, we prepared for our Winter Dance in January. ln April, our talented, dramatic Juniors presented the Smash hit, Ever Since Eve, under the effective sponsorship of Mr. Fox. In May, we collaborated with the Seniors in giving the Junior-Senior Prom. Seniorsllll The thrill of being asked by underclassmen How does it feel to be a Senior? was a delightful feeling to all of us. The honor and the headaches of being Senior Class President were given to Henry Wagner. During the excitement of the holi- days we gave our Christmas dance. After our Christmas Dance, we accomplished another great feat in the presentation of the Senior Play, Don't Take My Penny. We turned mountaineers for a day when we presented our hillbilly skit. We ended our four years of high school with the memorable occasion, the Junior-Senior Prom. We hope that the fut- ture Seniors will have as much fun and as many good times as we had. Formerly, the paper was issued once a month, but this year it was decided that B-Hive would come out every two weeks, totaling sixteen issues. After winning second place in the national Columbia Scholastic Press Association in l945, B-Hive is again entering the contest in 1946. Journalism I, the reportorial staff, and Journalism ll, the editorial board, make up the B-Hive Club, which is now larger than it has ever been. With the increased number of Journalism students, more editors have been ap- pointed, making the work more specialized. With each year, B-Hive hopes to bring more information and enjoy- ment to its readers. H 26 STUDENT CONGRESS TUDENT Congress is organized to give the student body an opportunity through its representatives to make a careful study of student problems and to offer suggestions as to procedures. The president of each home- room automatically becomes a member of the Congress. The problems dealt with are those which arise from the student activity program of the school. The Congress aims to initiate and support projects of common interest to the majority of the student body. It strives for participation' by the major- ity. Through the student committees with their sponsors-assembly, build- ing and grounds, dance, homeroom representatives, lost and found, traffic, and reception-students and faculty members plan programs cooperatively. This year's Congress has adopted a War Orphan, has sponsored the Treasure Chest Fund from which contributions are made to tuberculosis, paralysis and Red Cross drives, has established a general fund for the support of clubs and committees, has provided bus transportation to out-of-town athletic events, has purchased a Bergenfield High School flag, and has taken an active part in building school traditions. Student Congress officers are Eugene De Angelis, president, Ray Weigle, vice-president, Catherine Byrne, treasurer, and Betty Oerter, secre- tary. 27 Y wif f s xx, if NX M if pgs.
