Mr. Harry C. Stephan, Administrative Principal TO OUR GRADUATES: Taking the physical effort out of living seems to have become the goal of every con- triver and innovator. Expanding our leisure time has become the objective of those who create machines or who guide the destinies of the people who produce our goods. While such purposes are attainable when The only consideration is the utilization of inanimate contrivances, the making of a man or woman requires a vastly ditterent ap- proach. Your diploma signifies that you have accomplished one of the requirements in your progression towards personal success. It signifies a body of information attained and mastered. lt signifies an objective determination to which you have dedicated your time and your effort. This has been accomplished through the expenditure of a great deal of time and energy on your part but it has taken the combined efforts of the government, the general public, and dedicated educators, to make this goal possible and to help you attain your purpose. For each of us it has been a privilege and pleasure to enioy these years ot training with you. Although we will miss you, we share in the feeling of pride for the successful completion of this port of your ultimate objective. All of us wish you well and know in our hearts that your present accomplishment tore- casts a future success and happiness as you continue to grow in knowledge and ability. Such an un- dertaking demands this as the very minimum of effort you must make for yourselves. ffirmation and evidence of the care you have taken up to this time is in your hearts, your heads and your hands right now because you have finally achieved the goal you sought here - graduation from one area of training or another. To date, however, you have lived within the comparative security of these school walls. You have depended on your teachers to compliment you when you were right and to point out your short- comings when you were wrong. oadmaps are insurance that any sensible driver consults before setting out on a long, arduous journey after he has selected where he wants to go. They help him determine the best possible route to get there, how fast he must go in the time he has, and the possible detours he may encounter. esponsibility for reaching the destination that you select for yourselves now depends only on yourselves. Adulthood, and the loneliness of adulthood in the decisions you must make, are now thrust upon you whether you wont this, are ready for this - or not. gnis fatuus is a Latin phrase that should take on a deep meaning for you at this time. The hopes and dreams and aspirations of anyone are sacred to himself so long as he works to attain the attainable. Ignis fatuus means silly daydreaming, vague hopes with- out determined action. uccess, most of the time, only comes about for any man because he works for it. You choose the road that lies ahead for you. God speed you on your way! 8
