What does it mean, Brother Shan- non, to have gladly spent forty years of your life in the service of the Lord? It means forty years of instructing youth by word and example in Christian Doctrine, of awakening Latin .classes with a thunderous bo! bis! bitlj of opening before our minds with exact data, informative facts and interesting sidelights the events of Church and World History, 'thus enabling us to know and love our faith and heritage. lt means building, Brother, building in youth a monument more lasting than bronze, more lofty than pyramids. In helping others to mold their lives, you, too, have built your own, your life in religion, a life that has been con- ..,.-9 rr as i E l REVEREND' snort-usa, JEROME A. SHANNTONT F.S.C.H-. i 40 yeafrsl T stant, faithful to its commitment, sincere and firm in its structure, - a life of integrity. Iona School in New Rochelle was the cornerstone of your apostolate. Subsequent assignments were to Power Mem- orial Academy, l.eo High School, where you taught tor fifteen years, All Hallows, and, in 1956, Bergen Catholic. Throughout these years you have had an intense interest in your students and their welfare, an interest which has continued long after their graduation. Their letters to you are a true sign of their appreciation. The Missions have been one of your primary interests. The Mission schools of the Brothers in Africa and the West Indies have had few ntore sincere or helpful friends than you. Your kind advice and encouragement as Moderator of the Mothers' Club have helped this organization to develop into an active part of our school. lt is fitting on this, the tenth anniversary of our school, that the Crusader '66 should be dedicated to you. As a member of the first teaching staff and as the Assistant Superior you shared with the other Brothers and students the pioneering hardships - lack of heat, the carrying back and forth and arranging of desks, a sea of mud where grounds and walks are at present. You have seen the infant school grow and develop into one of the outstand- ing schools of New Jersey. Thank you, Brother, for your help in so many ways. Thank you for your dedicated service in building up the Body of Christ. Ad multos anosl

,I l 100 years of Let us praise a man of renown, Such as has borne rule . . . A man of fortitude, endued with wisdom. By the strength of his wisdom lnstructing men in most holy words. A man rich in virtue, e Studying beautitulnessp Living in peace . . . His praises shall be related. His posterity shall endure forever . . His name lives to all generations, And generations yet to come will speak of his wisdom. CBen Sirach, 44, passiml Sixty years! Sixty years of dedication, striving, work- ing, involvement. These have been full years for you, Brother Gleeson, full in the know-ledge that you have consecrated your life, by vows, to God, full in the service of that monastic life and in the spiritual and scholastic development of the boys to whose training you have devoted this time. In 1911, you, a young Christian Brother, arrived 'From Ireland. There were only ten Brothers in America and two Irish Christian Brothers' schools. You and the other Brothers willingly worked, and'sacrificed, and gave all for the glory of God. There are now in America 734 Brothers in 34 schools teaching 22,007 students. Careful preparation united to a Christ-like understanding and pedagogical skill are what you employed in teaching the Word of God, the intricacies of Latin and Greek, and the events of American History. Indeed, Brother, you have left enshrined a memorable vision in the minds and hearts of a vast multitude among whom are prelates, priests, pro- fessional men, and countless others - your students, Brother. Yes, they do and shall relate your praises, and generations. yet to come shall speak of your kindness, wisdom, and patience. You have' done great things, Brother, important things. You have governed with re- sponsibility and courage the North American Province of the Christian Brothers of Ireland, you have ,served as Principal of All Hallows High School and Iona Preparatory School. But you will be remembered, Brother Gleeson, by your boys, now men, not for this but for your kindness, wisdom, and patience. Now you are at Bergen Catholic, still young in spirit - still- teaching - still giving. How well we remember the spontaneous ovation, you, the football team's number one fan, received when you addressed the Bishop Egan rally, and most of all the encouragement and school spirit you helped to fuse and .maintain. Most of us can remember a time when a kind, or a stern word from you helped us along. How many boys have youihelped in this way, and in a thousand other ways? Thank you, Brother. Ad multos anos!
