We think of their willingness to assist, their friendly smiles, their words of en- couragement, and their helpful advice. These have come to us from the ones who have also aided us in learning rnuch about God's Word, and how best to tell others of Christ's love and provision for us. It is with pleasure that we dedicate the 1961 Searchlight to our competent advisor and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Knauer. .CLS .4-B? 4 W W W WNW! Berean offers this in the Chris- tian Education Course. Here they learn the basic principles and methods of teaching, in the classroom and in actual practice as well. Studies are made in philosophy and psy- chology to enable the student to understand man and his actions. These ideas and concepts are evaluated in the light of Biblical truths and standards. Missionary i'F ar and wide the fields are teeming with the waves of ripened grain. Every Berean student is presented with this challenge, and some prepare to meet it as they enter the missionary course. The student is required to study the New Testament in its original language of Greek. This type of study gives the student deeper insight in the meaning of many passages of Scripture. As a Christian worker, the student is naturally desirous of learning methods of evangelism in missions. Later on the student studies the major religions of the world, becoming acquainted with their doctrines, their manner of worship, their needs, and how we can meet their needs as we present the Gospel message to them. The young man who comes to Berean for this pur- pose delves into the Scriptures laboring many hours over his Greek assignments, learning the vocabulary and translating parts of the Greek New Testament into English. Music With the addition of Miss Esther Becker to the fac- ulty many new and practical music courses have been added to the curriculum offered at Berean. Often the men who are learning how to conduct are called on to direct the choir during rehearsal or the student body during the chapel hour. Each week practical application is made in the course of Music in Christian Education as the student directs the choir in a local church. Instruction is also given on how best to use the hymns of the church in worship services. 'These are only a few of the music courses now avail- able to the Berean student, all of which enable him to be a better witness for Christ and to express his relationship to God through the God-given medium of music. Because this is so, every semester a day is set aside that the students might spend the entire day in prayer and experience a richer relationship with Christ. As they come to the Lord with their hearts fully opened to Him that He might search them and teach them many things, they expect great blessings from Him. Approaching His throne, they ask Hrst for for- giveness for their sins, then they take to Him the re- quests that are on their hearts. They find that they learn many new things about Him and about them- selves. As a result of this day they gain new concepts, new purposes of life, which raise them to new heights in their walk with Christ. These days are never forgotten by the students be- cause they know that their lives were changed through each of these days of prayer. 24 Choir Under the guidance and leadership of our well-trained director, Miss Becker, the choir has been able to sing at a number of special programs at the school, such as the Laymen Friends of Berean, Parents Day, and Alumni Day. For the Christmas program the choir sang at the Candle- light Service. It takes time, much tedious practice, and patience for the choir to become as one in their singingg but it is well worth it all when the singing is done as a witness for the glory and honor of God. In order to help the Berean student to awaken to this fact the Foreign Mis- sions Fellowship has been organized. It is the entire student body, governed by the executive council which consists of the elected officers and prayer band presi- dents. The program is carried out by the five prayer bands: African, European, Latin American, North American, and Oriental. Students interested in these areas of the world join together to pray Fellowship North American Prayer Band for and become familiar wlth the mission- aries. Occasionally a missionary is the guest of the prayer band and presents the work he has been doing and the needs and problems he faces. As the student meets many missionaries, he realizes that there may be a place for him to fill on the foreign Held, that the Lord wants yielded people to serve Him. It is partly through F.M.F. that the stu- dent becomes aware of his possibilities as a witness for the Lord on the foreign field. Latin American Prayer Band Oriental Prayer Band. Missionary Conference One of the highlights of the school year is the Worldwide Missionary Conference held in No- vember by the Bethel Bible Fellowship Church of Allentown. Classes are dismissed in the morning that the students might participate in the Bible study hour and the panel discussion. This year the Bible study was led by Rev. Elmer Thompson of the West Indies Mission, who viv- idly portrayed from the Bible the Christian's life as a life for others. The panel discussions, led by Dr. Ralph Davis of the Africa Inland Mission, gave the students deeper insight into the mission- ary's way of life and the problems that must be faced in missions in the 60's. But the greatest experience of the missionary conference is the individual meetings with the missionaries themselves as they visit us around the table at our noon meal. Here the students receive a real blessing as they hear the trials and triumphs personally from the missionary, and are challenged by the tremendous need for more workers, for truly, the labourers are few. We are eager for the three years to pass quickly so that we can begin the work to which the Lord has called us. But we soon learn that we are called to the harvest Held even while we are students. So it is that we may Senior Girls' Trio. 30 Service Missionary to Egypt - Pa. teach Sunday school classes or Bible clubs, work with Youth for Christ, or travel on Sunday with the Berean Gospel Team. This experience is not only to put into practice the things that we have learned in the class- room but is an expression of our love for Christ. It is our privilege and responsibility as Christians to tell others of Christ's love, for we are to be ambassadors for Him. Sharing the student's sorrow, burden, or problem, the Dean assists him in finding a solution. It is wonderful to know that there are two Deans, Mr. Knauer and Mrs. Hartman, who are patient, kind, and true friends. Mr. Knauer is Dean of Men and Dean of Studentsg Mrs. Hartman is Dean of Women. This group of dedicated laymen and pastors plan the basic work of the budget and support for the school. But more than that, they work for the betterment of the school in curriculum, equipment, and staff, always looking to the Lord for wisdom in making the right decisions as they strive to brighten the torch of educa- tion. It is to these men that we, the students of Berean, owe much, and to them we extend our thanks. 1 E Deans Mrs. Ruth Hartman, Dean of Women. ' 1 Ye Are Witnesses Imprisonment and death was often the lot of the early Christians who were faithful in telling forth the message of salvation. Hence the word for witness was carried over into English as the word for martyr. Those to whom the words of the theme verse were spoken were eye-witnesses to the life, death and resur- rection of Jesus Christ. These men were told to preach repentance and remission of sins through faith in the crucified and risen Savior. The world was so hostile to the message that most of the early witnesses laid down their lives for the sake of the truth. The Class of 1961 by its choice of this theme has indicated a willingness to assume the responsibility and danger involved in witnessing. This is part of your subservience to the Lordship of Christ. We would remind you that the content and source of your mes- sage is God. You are not cast upon your own ingenu- ity to produce an opinion or to suggest a possible reasonable solution to the problem of human ills. The message you are to bear is the God-given revelation that He is creator, and grace giver through Jesus Christ. Your witness is to be a testimony and proof of the truth. The Lord Jesus made a promise to first century Christians that you also may receive, Be thou faith- ful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of lifef' QRevelation 2:lOj. RUTH A.
