HISTORY OF THE BEREA CITY SCHOOLS In 1855 the Berea City School had its beginning as County School District No. 16, a very small school of pupils from six to eighteen years of age. The highest attendance that year was 24, the lowest was 7, the average attendance, 19. School was in session for three months. The students were charged $2, 50 tuition; the state allocated $50; and the local people subscribed $10, lumber, and labor toward the first school building. The first trustees were Ferguson Moore, Thomas Jefferson Renfro, and John G. Fee. The first teacher was William E. Lincoln, an Oberlin College (Ohio) student, who taught during his vacation - hence the three-month school term. Three years later, in 1858, when John A. R. Rogers came to Berea, he added a pay (sub- scription) school to the town school. A year later, in 1859, this subscription school was closed because of the teachers' views on slavery. The town school, however, continued uninterrupted with Miss Rawlings as the teacher. After the Civil War, Fee, Rogers, and others returned to Berea, but they no longer used the town school building. The exact date of our beginning as an independent district is not known, but it was probably about 1890, when the town of Berea was incorporated, An article printed in The Citizen on March 15, 1917, states that a two-year high school had been added to the city school. The two rooms set aside for the high school classes were heated with portable kerosene stoves, In 1929 Berea High School graduated its first four-year class, The ten members of that class were; Helen H. Smith Wilbur Wynn Thurman Todd In 1968 the Berea City School enrollment was 582 elementary students and 211 high school students; forty-three were graduated from high school. We occupy 35 rooms for classrooms and need more. Our alumni association boasts over 850 members.
